After working at a newspaper in Steubenville and seeing just how incredibly fast the pages fly through the machines it's amazing we get legible print on them in the first place.

Imagine printing a run of 45,000 books probably takes a few 8 hour shifts to do the run. is every book printed during those hours gonna be 100%? I very Highly doubt it KEEP IN MIND the machines used at the time and the quality of the paper stock also affects ink bleed and color saturation. if on of the plates is off by a mere thousandth you will see the difference in quality.

And additionally up until recently most 9.9's/10's were hand picked right from the presses for just those reasons.

It stands to reason that since TKJ was printed the technology has advanced but most major companies tend to cut corners in areas that garner little attention (until it's to late) such as maintenance and supplies (cheaper paper =lower overhead)

Very often the (news)paper would miss their delivery deadline due to simple machine breakdown.

I know It's on my list to attend. I was worried about the black panther movie but after seeing how it was done in CACW I'm hoping to catch it on the big screen as well.

I'm just happy to see anybody posting these days much less seeing some of our regulars from the old forums around.

Haha, even back then the heavy hitters were pining for the days of old.....

Has anyone else noticed a lot of newer members are listing issues for sale in GEM MINT condition?

As I click through my want list issue by issue here and there I'm seeing a trend lots of 10's and lots of $120.00 books (that may very well only be 6's or 7's at best) just wondering if I'm alone in noticing this.

as far as buying in bulk lots that's the best way to go if you want lots of books and want them cheap.

I keep just about every book even if it's written on torn or missing pages/pieces those are the ones I look through with my younger kids and it keeps the nicer books in good shape while having the experience of sharing the hobby with my kids. my older two kids have their own bags and boards and have picked up on safe handling /reading practices. but in general i keep the low grade stuff in it's own box and away from my main collection just to avoid getting things mixed up.

Agreed.

In the case of my books in my own collection I'll only bump to 9.6 if the book truly stands out and "pops" in appearance.

After leafing through 5's and 7's a 9.6 looks like a sparkling gem in comparison.

I'm still in the process of going back through my collection in the guide and changing a lot of my issues down
as when I first added them I was truly "noobish" at grading.

Yep, don't know if "noobish" is a word but I totally used it. smile

It was a part of my morning routine back when I delivered newspapers. The pressroom would finish their daily run about 11:30 am so I'd be on the boards going I can fit a few more threads in before I go it's only 10am.

I just wonder what some of those guys are up to these days.

I spent a few years basically neglecting the hobby as a whole and when I picked it back up, it feels almost overwhelming.

Same trends and gimmicks only more abundant and twice as pricey.

Still love the same characters and still excited over new stories for said characters (and sometimes crossovers) but still just as off-put by the lust for money side of it all. (now I know it takes money to live and survive but single issues for $6 or $7? that's ludicrous) and i won't even go into the variant nonsense......

That's a reasonable approach.

When I first signed up for the guide I got carried away when I saw the high values of the rarer books and just left them.

It was a good year or two before I even tried to get better at grading books because at the time (as a noob) I didn't realize the impact of grade on price, as well as how I felt about grade in general.

As a child if I had comics at all I was thrilled to have them.

They were read over and over and so the value (obviously now) went down but since I've grown, I now know the impact that simply reading a comic can have on it's grade/value.

So I only sell books that I have not/will not read or if I have I usually let the buyer know.

Plus when buying books used or "raw" I generally assume that they've been read as well.

There's a listing for "Kurt Shaffe"r"berger" in the guide and one pending for "Kurt Shaffe"n"berger."

I just wanted to point out this fact in case one of the two is a mistake.

I've been adding info and all of the New Adventures Of Superboy issues list the penciller as "Kurt Shaffenberger" with an "n."

thanks, Tim

That's why I have trouble letting go of some of my older books they just feel like something special when you hold them in your hands. The covers were great the books weren't 40% ads and the stories were good. Even in some of the less popular titles and "B" and "C" characters had great writers. When Marvel copied a DC characters or vise versa they sometimes outshined the original because of the art and stories.

Bag & Board Size for Gladstone Comics

expander
expander
From what I gather most of these issues seem to be moderns and modern bags and boards should fit.
How-ever since some bronze age issues had differing heights (3-4mm) you may want to look at TPB bags or (Trade paperback bags.)

I have the conventional bags which just have a standard flap at the top and I also have the self sealing bags.
I've noticed that "prestige format books don't fit as comfortably into the self sealers so I just use current size bags and boards with those.

A lot of Gladstone stuff is just thicker books because of the high page counts (some as high as 90 pages.)

Check out this wiki page for some nifty pub. history:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gladstone_Publishing

Also when my lcs is out of suplies i default to the following site for supplies.

https://www.bagsunlimited.com/

Lots of cool stuff. Hope this helps and if you need more help just ask!
