I think if more was made about the scarcity and someone was willing to pay prices for some of the non-keys that catch the attention of the community as whole things may change. People pay attention to the bottom line far more than they are willing to admit.

'We' don't get to determine which books are more valuable. The market does that. That's why I always get a chuckle out of those blogs with the 'what's hot' push for obscure 'hot' books. If it's easy to find and people aren't buying it, it's not going to go up in value.

'We' are collectors/readers so unless you are downloading everything for free 'we' are the market. BTW there are lots of easy to find expensive books, such as Incredible Hulk #181. So "easy" or "hard" to find really isn't a factor as much as does the number of copies out there meet demand? Sometime super rare books rarely go up by much if at all because they just never go up for sale or no one is actively hunting them.

If you want to change how people perceive these, then you will need to convince a large number of people to throw down more money for a copy of Incredible Hulk 180 (as an example), than they currently would for the same condition 181. Then people would see it as more valuable.

You are right about that, but, you would have to agree that, like many other things in the hobby, there is absolutely no consistency in either definitions or how "the market" values these books. More consistency on how we define first appearances would eliminate at least one of the barriers newcomers have in trying to learn the hobby. Frankly, I don't care how the market values the various early appearances I just care that we recognize them consistently. I think a first appearance be it cameo or full be recognized as the first appearance with no designation that it is cameo or full. If the character's first appearance is a cameo then the first full story appearance should be labeled as "first full story".

I noticed in our recent price change column that Justice League #40 has gone up in value due to it supposedly being the first appearance of Grail, Darkseid's daughter. Yet, I remember it coming out the Wednesday after Free Comic Book Day a couple of years ago. The significance of this being that DC had released a preview book for free comic book day that had four or five pages of upcoming books and in that book it had four or five pages of Grail being born and the book showed her. So that free book is actually her first appearance by about three or four days. I remember that free book causing havoc among the speculators at the time.

Yeah, a tough call on that set of books considering it is the same material in both books too. However, since Absolute Vertigo is also a preview and is recognized FA of Preacher, the FCBD issue is, in fact the FA of Grail.

That is a tough call since I don't think self promoting is generally accepted. Trying to contact each member would likely make many members upset and there are also likely lots of spam account that could cause all sorts of problems for you.

Michellinie I believe was the one who confirmed that the pushes of PP as early appearances of Venom. Of course not identified so, IMHO, not first appearances. Just like the pounding fist of Doomsday before he was identified.

Like I said I don't care which is more valuable at all. Just how they are identified and that it is done consistently.

Question about CPG valuations of graded issues

Oxbladder
Oxbladder
It is usually an error. Not itntentional but with the "software". If one of the worker bees changes a graded price in a certain way it breaks the code and freeze the pricing on some the graded books allowing the raw counterpart to catch up.

That being said sometimes there can be little to no difference in what people will pay for a lower grade raw and graded book. It depends on the title, scarcity and the demand.

That is entirely up to you! If you want him to sign your SW#1 then by all means do it. If you decide to sell it later on someone will no doubt buy it. Those who don't care for signed books will stay away. That's how it work with signed books.

I would suggest that if you plan on selling the book then using CGC or CBCS to witness the signature and grade the book is the best way to go because you will realize a better return than trying to sell the book with no verification of the signature. If CBCS or CGC are not around to do this CBCS does have a service that can verify the signature and grade it after the fact.

If you have no plans on selling then just get the book signed and enjoy it Big Grin

What does it say for Avengers 62? Maybe they are referring to the first book solely dedicated to BP?

Other than that you should post in the database error forum about this. If this story is a reprint then Avengers 62 should be listed as the first BP solo story.

I thought it was okay. My friend loved it but I wasn't as impressed Leto wasn't bad but wasn't good either. Still can't stand the look for the Joker in this movie. The story was still a bit too typical for me. Robbie was great and as was the woman who played Waller. Other than Deadshot I am not too familiar with the the other characters so they really were just seat holders to me. Smith was acceptable as Deadshot. I was disappoint Katana didn't have more of a role. There was some disjointed parts, likely due to editing out the Joker crud. They needed to polish up a bit but like BvS they kinda just hacked out the bits and left it as is.

Well I disagree about critics and their reviews. But I hardly ever base my movie viewing on their reviews. I have enjoyed many movies critics have loved as well as been underwhelmed by some too. Generally I don't bother with the majority of horror and comedy movies in the theatre because most are just cookie cutter drek. I much prefer classic paranormal horror that isn't heavy on CGI and gore. Found film is also getting tedious. Since I have become so particular I just skip theatre showings and wait for them to show up on movie channels. (Most comedy is just freaking awful and so I won't pay to see it)

I have noticed that some of the Marvel Romance books are picking up some heat. These are late Silver and early Bronze Age books which people are starting to discover because they have art from some of the great artists from the era. For example, Steranko, Bushima, and Romita all did covers and interiors on these books and they are really hard to find in any condition.

Our Love Stories has seen an increase over the last 6 months and I think it will continue to go up. My Love books are not far behind either.

I have a handful of "My Love Stories". I will have to be on the lookout for increasing prices on these.
In the past, the early romance stories (1950's and into early 1960's) commanded the values, while the dying genre in the early 1970's were less desirable. Interesting theory they may increase in value.

Not only is there lots of great art in Marvel and DC romance but it is super hard to find high grade. The attrition rate on Romance is huge so it can be a task to secure copies above a 6.0. The stories a pre sappy and silly but I really enjoy them and just love the art. I am impressed that the artists really worked to make each person look different even in subtle ways. Lots of artists these days barely bother to do that.

There is interest in the comics but mostly from late 1980. I don't know about the unopened packs. I know some people collect these but I don't know what kind of prices they pay. I doubt it is as much as some of the single issues might realize

If you go to the menu bar at the top you will see the "Price Guide" option. If you use the "pull down" option you will see the browse/search options. If you use the search option I recommend using the fewest words possible from the title because it is very picky in what will work. Skip any punctuation and contractions. the search functions are truly awful but if you play around a bit with the search you can figure it all out.

I would also suggest that you look at the publisher's info that is in fine print at the bottom usually in the front few or back few page of the book to get the true title of the comic, date, etc.

Poly bags aren't comics. They are bags. Some anal collectors will care about the bag but it's just a bag. I usually cut them open and bag the comic and any other contents and either toss the bag or fold it up and put it behind the bag opposite the comic behind the board.

It is very, very hard to get above a 9.8. As Tabetha says when you get to GEM level you are talking incredibly strict standards. C entering, corners, staple placement, etc can all knock a book from thos GEM levels. Unfortunately I think you have to pay for your gradin notes but they are helpful in understanding why your books got the grades they did. Oh it could have been a defect inside too. Remember the insides count too.

DC Silverage 1st Appearances

Regardless of which company first appearances are not always significant. If the character becomes entrenched in mythos then that first appearance will have more importance. There is also a lot of subjectivity is the importance of characters (or events). To a Green Lantern fan the first Star Shapphire is going to have much more significance than to a Superman fan.

All this being said, it never hurts to have the first appearance of any character because you never know when the character will catch on. Sometimes right away sometimes decades. Not gave a care about Rocket Racoon until just a few years ago now his first appearance is worth quite a bit. Same with the Scott Lang Ant-Man. You just never know what the future will bring.

CLZ works well because they don't bother with grading. You can never keep up on that anyway. Yeah CLZ has its bug but the thing is they will deal with them if you report them. CPG just doesn't ... Or at least in a timely manner. Heck they can't even program their site to freaking work on a variety of mobile devices. Really?
