I'd start a petition to get Tex back. upset

Years ago I had an old comic store owner tell me to never make it public that you've got a valuable comic collection. (So if anyone asks, I've just got 5,000 copies of the entire NFL SuperPro run.)

Did you collect the newest Atlas books few years back, like Grimm Ghost, Ironjaw and Wulf the Barbarian? Seemed like Tex and others really liked the new stories. I think Atlas is finished now after a few years and a law suit. Not sure if someone bought the properties or rights.

No, I didn't get the new ones. Sometimes I like a comic because it's so hokey and lame it's good - like puns! Especially older stuff. It gives it a certain charm. So I often avoid them reinventing old titles. And I know... I'm probably missing out on good stories.

Here's an example...
Barbarians #1 from June 1975. (This guy has a JAW made of IRON. Guess what his name is???)

Here's what can happen if they've never been taken out of the bag they were sold in...
1) When being picked up, the comic flopped/bent forward or backward a bit, and caused 1 non-color-breaking stress mark on the spine. See that barely perceptible crease half-way down the pic?
NOT A 10!

2) The comic was set down or dropped a little bit on the corner, denting the corner a little bit. See that barely perceptible dent on that corner in both of these pics?
NOT A 10!

3) Those bags aren't 100% air-tight, and they probably don't have an acid-free buffered board in the bag or Micro Chamber Paper that keeps the pages from yellowing with age due to exposure to air. See how the page in this pic isn't actually WHITE white?
NOT A 10!

Yes, there are 10.0s that exist, but as lealew7 said, they're usually taken off the press and handled with GREAT care and put in a protective container or bag/board or slabbed ASAP.

The was a comic store where I live (it closed a few years ago) that I think must've priced a bunch of comics in the speculator era, and never changed them by 2007. Examples: X-Men #300 for $20. One of the "Funeral For A Friend" issues for $8. The "Death of Superman" black bag issue (not platinum) for $40. A lot of comics priced for $4 that sell for $1 at other places.
I personally liked the owner, but he was really out of touch with the times and didn't know much about newer comics (he was in his 60s and had been in the business since the late 70s).

There's a place where I live that's currently open that has all recent issues from the past 20 years at Cover Price + 50 cents (unless a Key). I figure that's just laziness. I've only been there once. These sell for less than cover elsewhere.

I've got a shop here (Rochester NY) that I stay with because they're honest, low-priced (you can get 30% off cover for new stuff), and their motto is "If you don't leave happy, we probably didn't do our job.". They treat their customers right. I only go elsewhere if they tell me they'll never get a certain recent issue in (Distributer's fault), or if it's a Silver or Golden they never see.

rperryx2000 - No, I get the "personal opinion" thing. That's most of what collecting is about. Look at me... I like to read the TRS-80 Whiz Kids! Know anyone else who does? Those comics suck! So I totally understand what you're saying.
But iconic really does mean "Widely recognized and well-established or acknowledged, especially for distinctive excellence." You could have an INCREDIBLY beautiful, perfectly drawn, amazing cover... but no one knows about it. Like when lealew7 said "if i post all the pictures of the ones i like, this will go on forever". He's right... but iconic isn't just that you "like" them. And if someone has a hundreds of iconic covers in mind, then they're not all iconic.
The 90s Turok us definitely more known than any of the old Turok series are. Even if you read them or knew of them - you're not going to picture any of them as really standing out. So that one's definitely more iconic than a lot of others. I think that I probably COULD see that one being used as an example in a comic museum.

As far as popularity, you're absolutely right about what you said about Valiant; and what you said about the importance of certain books to, like Dark Empire. All absolutely true. But that doesn't mean the covers themselves are iconic. It's like how I understand the importance of Rob Liefeld to the comic industry. But I'm not going to call him "an incredibly talented artist". New Mutants #98 is an important book, especially right now, but the cover??? The artwork??? Ugh. I'd say ASM #300 is a more iconic 90s cover.

I'm more fond of realistic-looking art, not like Sam Keith. Joe Jusko is my definite favorite. Probably closely followed by Alex Ross.

I should've mentioned Frank Frazetta in my post. Joe Jusko's my favorite living artist after Frazetta died.
I'll probably take flak for this, but I never liked the mouths and body poses of some of Jack Kirby's work. I was reading an old Machine Man recently, and all the soldiers in this full-page panel had the same face. By contrast, in an old Ditko comic, every face in the background crowd was different.

That Shock Suspenstories # 16 is ART. Not a drawing, but ART! You're right about the lighting, shading, shadows.

I know. When The Big Crash happened, I didn't check back for a long time. And no it's like a Ghost Town. And I miss a few of the Old-Timers, like Tex. I try to think of some topics to keep things active, but I only see you and about 5 other people post.
At least the Price Guide side is going nicely. I love some of the improvements and some of the things they say they'll be implementing soon.

Two movie adaptation comics.
In 1979 Disney decided to jump on the Sci-Fi film craze that Star Wars had given rise to. In December 1979 they released "The Black Hole"... Disney's first PG rated film. Whitman Comics adapted the film into 2 comics the next year, and also published 2 more that continued the adventure after the movie.

Nice stuff D.
But... I get excited about seeing it all... AND sad that I don't have it all!

My only Cap 117 looks like your Copy 1.

I'm still trying to find a nice Marvel Spotlight 5. I don't even have a crappy copy, and I've been a G.R. fan since I was 7.

I love a lot of Swamp Thing cover art. The water around his body as he's coming up out of it... nice.

I also got S.T. 135 for about $30 or $40 a couple years before the TV Show. And I forgot about having it until the first season was done! It's nice to see them go up!

If you REALLY love comics, that "Secrets Behind the Comics" is a must-have. (And I DON'T have... YET!)

I'm still working on my full run of Battlestar Galactica and Micronauts. I ended up with about 4 copies of Micronauts #1 - "Oooo! THIS one looks better than the last one I bought!"

Keep this stuff a-coming! Cuz I'm a-lookin'!

There is a listing for "Origins Of Marvel Comics (And Son Of...)", but the "#1" issue has a picture of the "Son Of Origins" cover. This is incorrect, and should be the "Origins Of Marvel Comics" cover - which I can upload.

The "#2" issue has no picture. Please put the cover picture from #1 to #2.

From what I've read, if the writing's of a person's name is not huge and obtrusive, and is in ballpoint pen - it shouldn't affect the grade up to a 9.8.
Here's an example of a 7.0 CGC with an owner's name:

Here's a 7.5...

I couldn't quickly find any in higher grades.
