Estimated Grade for Brand New Comics?
sclingerman
|
Since a good number (majority?) of off-the-shelf new comics have at least one or more of the following: - spine stress mark - a blunted/deformed corner - very slight cover abrasion - a 1-2 mm off-center cover wrap - slight abrasion to an edge - slight page lifting ... they'd be a 9.6 or 9.4 A 10.0 is NONE of these defects. They get handled by the printer, distributor, store, shippers at each point, and sometimes other customers. And since 9.4 is the default for adding a comic on this site, and is the cover price value - I just use that.
For more of what makes a comic which grade, go to the menu at the top of this page for: Price Guide -> Grading Guide. . . Why is this double-spacing??? edited by sclingerman on 11/28/2016 edited by sclingerman on 11/28/2016 |

After The Great Forum Crash, I got busy with a lot of other stuff in life, devoting more time to other things that posting here didn't allow for, and didn't check back on the forums for a long time. (I still used the Guide and MyCollection during that time.) I just came back onto the forums very recently to all the new changes.
About the Forums: I'd love to see a feature where you can view your most recent posts. A "Now where WAS I at?" thing so you can quickly see if people answered responded to your posts.
About the Guide: I'd LOVE to see a more frequently updated "Recent Value Changes" and "Comics To Watch", and longer lists of both. |

What to call those black streaks white covers get?
sclingerman

Ever see a mostly white cover that has longitudinal black streaks, like they're printed ON the cover? They don't come off so they're not some type of grime. They're not magic marker marks. They not color lift. They look like it came off the printing press that way. What's that specific defect called? |

OK. Thank you. I thought there was a feature in CPG that automated it.
Hey, CPG Admins... How about that feature??? Click a button, and it gives the top 200 collectors on CPG... by number of comics... OR by value of collection. That would be fun! |

Thanks Oxbladder. Now to figure out how they affect the grade...... Any ideas? Many printing defects don't hurt the grade much. Being produced with only 1 staple (has no staple holes for that area) has no real impact now. Printing Creases have to be really big before taking it below a 9.0. But THIS is something that's visually unappealing, unlike a crease or missing staple. |

PGX's inner sleeve is Barex (a polyester film) CGC uses Mylar and CBCS uses another polyester film.
CBCS uses PETG for their inner bags. PETG is PolyEthylene Terephthalate Glycol, also known as "Glycol modified PET". Mylar is Biaxially oriented PET (no Glycol added) film. PETG *is* archival level (ie: pretty much the same as Mylar). So even if it's not 100% equal to Mylar, it'll be effective longer than you'll live. |

How do you sort your collection...
sclingerman
|
Sorting is by Publisher, and 1 box of "Misc Publishers". Then alphabetical. But I don't put "Extraordinary X-Men" under "E" and "All-New X-Men" under "A"... they all go under "X".
I make my own dividers for titles. I only label boxes with the publisher name.
When I started filling up boxes years ago, a bought a lot and only filled them half-way. Shifting (take some out of box #13 and put them in #12... take a few out of #14 and put them in #13... etc) sometimes has to be done. Sometimes. When I put a new box for Spider-Man before Spider-Woman, I won't shift stuff back from Spider-Woman because I know I'll be buying a lot more ASM to FILL that box!
I use CPG and my own created Access DB because it has fields for Age (Golden, Silver, etc), Writer, Artist, Notes, etc. I can also sort a Report on my ENTIRE collection (or just 1 publisher) any way I want, like by age, by value, etc. Which is REALLY nice --- Hint Hint Hint CPG !!!! |

Read what netstuffers said to read. Get sort of a good idea of what a comic is... an 8-ish, or a 6-ish, or a 4-ish. Remember to look for those internal things in netstuffers link like Page Color, and "Missing Pages", and "Pages Missing", etc. Then to help finalize it, go visual and Google "Comic Graded 4.0" and "Comic Graded 5.0"(looking at the "Images" section of Google)... and see examples of what the Grading Companies give comics.
Grading comics take YEARS of education and practice.
The good news - This should help you a lot for at least getting to a 6.0 versus 7.0 decision, or 5.0 versus 6.0 decision. The bad news - (1) For valuable comics, a half point difference can make a big difference even at lower grades. (2) You can get 3 people who say "It's a 6.0." and the buyer will say "It's a 5.5... maybe a 5.0." Because as netstuffer said "because grading is extremely subjective". Even Grading Companies have multiple people grade one comic before it gets a grade.
Getting them officially graded by a Grading Company... When you get this done for a comic, there's no "Well, it looks like a 5.0 to me." It doesn't set it's value in stone, but it helps. Should you get a comic graded? If a comic is kind of "Key" (more valuable) and in a mid-grade like 5.0 or so, it might be worth it to get it graded this way. If a comic is very "Key" (really valuable) then even a low-grade like 3.0 is worth getting it graded this way.
What are 3 or 4 of the ones that you wish "were in mint shape because I would be in the money"? (Title and number.) We can use those as examples for what you should get graded (also called "slabbed"). |

And hey netstuffer, Why is it that when I hit "Enter" at the end of a line, in this box and the preview, it just goes to the next line with no empty extra line in between those 2 lines... but when it posts, there IS one? Sometimes I want to line break without a line between the 2 lines. It doesn't do this. This is in Firefox and Chrome, not in IE.
.
Line 1 + Enter. Line 2 + two Enters.

I don't have very high-grade Gold or Keys (No 8.5 FF #1). Those are pretty low-to-mid-grade, but some of my stuff's kind of unique. I collect quite a bit of odd-ball stuff - outside of the standard DC and Marvel.
This is one of my favorites in my collection. Again, low-grade. But not something everyone's seen. Spirit #1 (March 1952).

New to collecting Can you help me grade this comic

Here's CGC's current (new as of 2013) guidelines on tape... "... beginning with submissions postmarked after May 3, 2013, CGC will modify its grading standard and ignore the presence of tape if it serves a function (such as fixing a tear or spine split) and instead grade the book as if it was not present. Therefore, any existing defect will be graded accordingly. If the tape does not serve a function, the tape will be treated as a defect and the book will be downgraded." https://www.cgccomics.com/news/viewarticle.aspx?IDArticle=3327&cgc-modifies-stance-on-grading-submissions-with-tape
Here's what CBCS has on their site: "5.5 to 7.0 - Depending on the look of the comic, very small amounts of tape could be acceptable in this grade."
Here's some other quotes on grades for having tape...
Overstreet (BEFORE 2016. I've haven't read the 2016 one yet.): "Very Good - Only minor unobtrusive tape and other amateur repair allowed on otherwise high grade copies."
Heritage Auction: "4.0 - Only minor unobtrusive tape and other amateur repair allowed on otherwise high grade copies."
Mile High Comics: "Tape: This is an area of great controversy. Most dealers will allow a small tape repair in the Very Good category. We used to not allow any tape at all in the VG category, but upon reflection it really makes no sense to totally downgrade an otherwise VF/NM book to "Good," simply for having a very tiny amount of tape in one hidden spot. We are very, very reluctant to waive our prohibition of tape in this category, but once in a great while we do cross that line. But only when the book is otherwise quite beautiful, and the tape does not in any way mar the appearance of the book."
Metropolis Comics: "3.5 to 4.5 - Tape should never be used for comic book repair; however, many VG condition comics have minor tape repair." edited by sclingerman on 1/16/2017 edited by sclingerman on 1/16/2017 |

Roy Rogers #71 (Nov 1953). This... is... interesting. It's from the 50s when things were a lot less politically correct, so it has the "injun" (not Native American) say things like "Ugh. Me gettum horse!". Yikes.

If you read them and enjoy them, that's a great price. If you're talking about "collectable value", that was a fair price depending on their shape (hopefully they're not torn up, ripped up, water-soaked). |
