Marvel pence copies

Agree with Defiant -- I remember years ago on these boards there were people arguing whether or not the '60's Marvel pence copies were reprints or not, so it's clear that there are many that don't consider them 'legitimate' because they are misinformed. They are a smaller subset of the full run printed, which could lead to higher values in future, if people accept these for what they are.

Well, this thread has been killed by Photobucket wanting me to pony up cash to link to my scans. Any ideas on alternatives I can use? Photobucket was too slow anyway.

Photobucket was a pain in the butt, since it was so slow with all the ads. That's partly why I didn't post anything new for awhile. But now I can't.

I checked your thread, because you obviously have pictures there to see what the tags looked like, and I thought you were crazy to pay a $1 a day to show of your books. You could buy a nice key each year for that much. Now I suspect that it's being rolled out by Photobucket.

Canadian price variants

I agree. I picked up all of the Amazing Spider-man CDN price variants (aside from 238) within a couple of months in Toronto. High grade is tricky, but not impossible. you really have to dig though. Sellers here don't seem to charge more than the US values for these still (aside from the stores that generally over charge in the first place).
I have from original purchases made back in the day some odd-ball stuff, like the Life of Pope John Paul and Heroes for Hope with CDN cover prices. I even bought Star Wars 68 (Boba Fett cover) off the racks here.

UK Comic Collectors

There seems to be a certain snobbery on the part of CPG as far as valuing pence copies which has no resemblance to the real world and the prices pence copies attain. e.g. Iron Man #55 (f) cents copy - $514, pence copy - $250. Less than half price, really? Perhaps CPG should look at what pence copies sell for on eBay in the U.K. As you say, they are rarer than dollar issues by virtue of the fact that the U.K. is a fraction of the size of the States and therefore there were far fewer pence copies produced
It may not be snobbery on the part of CPG. Remember, part of what determines value is supply and demand. If collectors aren't shelling out more cash for pence copies (despite their rarity), then this is reflected in the market place. Guides are supposed to be a reflection of actual sales activity and not actually to create the value in the market.
Now maybe as you say they do sell for more in the UK than the guide is reflective of, then there's an imbalance. But I doubt that pence books are selling at the same value as regular priced copies in the US, based on collectors not generally wanting them (from my experience).
I agree with you though on the rarity though. There are less of these, so you would think that this would increase the desirability (as they are not reprints). A lot of the '80s Canadian cover price issues sell above guide for the same reasons, so it seems strange that this doesn't seem to happen with pence books too.

Thor 337 Variant Price?

You may want to read over this here:
https://rarecomics.wordpress.com/the-2018-price-guide-for-1980s-newsstand-canadian-cover-price-variants-type-1a/
Canada's population is about 10% of the US, and we aren't known as being bigger comic collectors than elsewhere, so there are less of these than the US newsstand versions. Some don't feel that there should be any difference in values, but for keys and blue chip titles the marketplace seems to think that there is in some cases.

ASM #238

From what I've seen over the past year or two, the intact tattoo insert does still have impact to the value. I think there has been some debate as to how much it should impact the value, as some argue that it is similar to a Mark Jewelers insert, and those don't typically affect the value greatly. The other side of the argument is that the tattoo is mentioned on the cover, so it should be considered part of the book.
Then there's the additional stuff like newsstand versus direct edition, where I believe not all copies for the newsstand run had the tattoo insert in it (this may only be with the Canadian cover price copies though). But, since it's easy enough to remove, how do you know if one has one that was printed without it?
More discussion here: https://rarecomics.wordpress.com/2017/10/20/amazing-spider-man-238-the-tattooz-situation/

This isn't true. All graded books were raw books before being encapsulated, so if a book can be graded at 9.8 or higher, then those grades do exist for raw. You'll just have a harder time convincing people that they actually are those grades.

Ruk said that EEIG meant that you have made an attempt to grade your collection, as opposed to using the site's default grade setting. It has nothing to do with the professional grading services.
