need good laugh? went to comic store on vacation.

Here's something funny that happened at a Half Price bookstore about a year ago. Their main Comic Book Guy came out with a cart of comics to put out and he saw me going through the clearance comics which I always do first and I could tell I put him at unease. He started putting some comics out and I was really finished going thru the clearance comics, but I sort of patiently pretended I was still looking while I was waiting for him to put out all the books. He put out some and then took the cart back. I think he was going to go over them more carefully and then bring some out later on. So I looked at what he'd put out and he had put out a bunch of early Gotham City Sirens and I bought some of the more important issues and left the store a few, because I did not want to seem too greedy. Then I went to the sales counter to purchase them and he came back out to help at the registers and before he left he glanced over to see what I was buying and he said, "There goes all my Gotham City Sirens did you leave me any?" And I said, yes, there are still some there. He knows that I always know what the hot comics are, so I figured it was no use coming back anytime too soon because he would certainly go over the comic books he had in his cart again. Since the store is really out of my way I have been careless not checking it lately, but I do not think he is there anymore. If so then perhaps I had better start making more frequent visits as it usually takes a new person a while to figure out what is actually happening for the current modern market. I personally liked the guy and we were friendly. I can't blame him for trying to look out for the store as best he could. edited by colbalt91 on 5/22/2017 |

Baywatch starring Dwayne Johnson
colbalt91
|
Dwayne Johnson stars in the new "Baywatch" movie as Mitch Buchanan, the head lifeguard at a California beach. Johnson is the dominant factor in this movie. He has tremendous charisma and just the right touch of humor to playoff Zac Efron's character of a newbie lifeguard. This movie is a hodgepodge of comedy and drama. Of course, that could be just a polite way of saying this movie has no real direction. One minute it is funny and you're laughing and the next there are broken bones and blood all over the place. It kind of reminds me of the "Chips" movie that came out a couple of months ago. Yes, this movie will get no Academy Awards. However it does entertain. This film is worth seeing knowing that it will not be the greatest movie you will ever see and not the worst movie you ever see. It has a charm. And it is fast moving for a two hour movie. In one part of the movie the characters even talk about hack television shows and what the characters have to do in the shows. I guess this is their way of letting the audience know that they will not be taking themselves seriously in this film. This is 'R' rated movie and it says graphic nudity, but the graphic nudity in this film is basically a dead man's penis that Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron use in a two minute skit. Considering the hot looking actresses running around the movie one would think that the nudity would concern the female body. There is no nudity of the female body other than there being skimpy bathing suits. Once again Zac Efron has found himself next to a male penis which can only perpetuate homosexuality rumors for him. One of the secondary female characters in this film is an Indian actress named Priyanka Chopra, who in some ways reminds me of Yasmine Bleeth who was on the Baywatch television show. Perhaps they wanted her on this movie set and she did not want to do it so they said, "Screw you, we will have you on this movie set anyway," and they hired the Indian look alike actress. I found this version of Baywatch to be entertaining though a few times it was offsetting in the way it would wander around the plot. Dwayne Johnson and his personality show why he is probably the highest paid actor in Hollywood at this moment. This film is worth a view. edited by colbalt91 on 5/24/2017 |

Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot
colbalt91
|
This is the kind of movie that really can't fail because of all the attention Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman received in the Superman vs Batman movie from last year. She stole the movie. Everybody has been anxiously awaiting this "Wonder Woman" film. And this film does deliver. People will not be disappointed. This movie takes place during World War I, about 20 years earlier then when Wonder Woman was first introduced into the comics in the early forties. From what I read the director and writers did not want to appear to copy Marvel Comic's Captain America movie which took place in World War II. So, they just moved her first appearance to World War I. Also, her comic book boyfriend, Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine in this movie is also in this era. The plot is simple as Wonder Woman leaves Paradise Island and her family of Amazons because Steve Trevor accidentally lands on shore while trying to escape some Germans. Upon hearing of the great battle taking place in the outside world, Wonder Woman is convinced that the ancient legends of the God of War, Ares, are true and he is behind it all. She wants to do her best to locate and defeat him. Her mother and Steve Trevor just humor her on this simplistic theory of hers. As the movie progresses Wonder Woman starts to find out more things about herself and her powers. At first it seems like the main villain would be a female scientist who is developing horrifying gas to be used against Germany's enemies, but then Wonder Woman discovers that it is probably the German officer above the female scientist. An interesting aside is the fact that there was a mysterious female doctor during this era named Elsbeth Schragmueller who was also known as Fraulein Doktor. There was even a very good film made in 1969 called "Fraulein Doktor" which dealt with the effects of gas used on World War I troops. To show how convoluted stories and legends go this female doctor was only a doctor because of a degree in politics from a University. And she had mysteriously disappeared after this war and her identity was only revealed later after World War II. Some social relevance is delivered into the script when one of the band of men Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor use to help them navigate their way through enemy territory, discusses how he wanted to be an actor, but because of his skin, which is swarthy, he knew he would have no chance. This revelation falls apart when it is remembered that right after World War I the top actor in Hollywood was Rudolph Valentino, a naturalized Italian with a very swarthy appearance. Apparently no one bothered to check history. As the movie moves along Wonder Woman gets more action scenes and the audience will barely notice that the movie took over 2 hours to finish. It is no use staying to the end of the credits because there is nothing, unlike Marvel movies. This movie is very enjoyable and once again Gal Gadot makes the statement that she is indeed... Wonder Woman. edited by colbalt91 on 6/2/2017 |

The Mummy starring Tom Cruise
colbalt91
|
For about three minutes, "The Mummy" seems like it will be a real horror/supernatural film, but then Tom Cruise enters into the picture and then the movie becomes another Tom Cruise adventure film. This indecisiveness goes on throughout the whole movie. At the very beginning of the credits the film company lets you know this is the start of Universal's Dark Universe. Universal has a history of famous movie monsters all the way back to the 30's. Monster's like Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Man, and the werewolf are bound to soon be coming. Just imagine if the producers of "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" had made a sequel. Recently someone made a King Kong movie and at the end of it they let the audience know that more Japanese style monsters were coming. Here they let you know that more Universal monsters are coming I was wondering how Russell Crowe was going to fit into a Tom Cruise movie, but then it is revealed that Crowe's character's name is Dr. Henry Jekyll. Need I say more. Once again this is a 3D movie where you can save money by just going to the regular feature if you so choose. You will be missing nothing. I found many of the horror scenes featuring the dead who the female mummy has resurrected as her minions, to be too dark and hard to distinguish as the many figures run around. The audience is likely to find this out too. Sofia boutella is very good in her role as the female Mummy, but the rest of the film is against her. She can exude sexinness and creepiness at the same time. This is only a PG-13 movie and yet there is more almost female nudity in it then Dwayne Johnson's remake of "Baywatch" which had a 'R' rating. This film is a jumbled-up mishmash of whatever. edited by colbalt91 on 6/8/2017 edited by colbalt91 on 6/8/2017 |

I have recently been reading some trades in both softcover and hardcover. This is probably due to most of my comics being scattered in different long boxes and short boxes around the house. I am now respecting Peter bagge. For a long time I was buying some of his comics, here and there, mainly for the artwork which reminded me of some artwork from the 60's Underground comics and from the Rat Fink comics. I figured all his talent was in his artwork. This guy is a great writer. I can't believe I was disrespecting him for so long just because of his artwork. This guy ranks up there with all the talented writers of this era and any era. So now whenever I see a Peter Bagge compilation or individual comic I get it and read it immediately. I am never disappointed. |

Baby Driver starring Jon Hamm
colbalt91
|
Well, John Hamm is not the main character in "Baby Driver," but it is a name I thought people would recognize as opposed to Ansel Elgort. Elgort is the main character in this fast-paced action movie that is heavily dependent on it's soundtrack. Elgort's character of Baby is also heavily dependent on music soundtracks. It is his soundtrack to life after his parents had died in a horrible auto accident with him in the car when he was a very young child. Cars and music are intertwined with violence in this movie that may remind some of "Gone in 60 Seconds." There was a lot of hype for this film that was directed and written by Edgar Wright. I did not want to believe it. As I was watching the movie I was nitpicking certain scenes, but in the end the movie won me over entirely. Yes, there are a few plot holes, but like potholes in a road, the movie circumvents them with it's style, action and music. "Baby Driver" is early Tarantino without the 'n' words. I guess we are in a more politically correct time now. Basically the plot of the movie is that this very young looking man named Baby is the getaway driver for a different series of crimes plotted by a mastermind named Doc played by Kevin Spacey. Baby is the best at what he does. He is the common denominator in a series of heists plotted by Doc using different gang members depending on what is needed to succeed with the crime. Baby owes Doc for some past deeds and thinks his job is done once he has paid his dues. Unfortunately for him, Doc has gotten to see Baby as a good luck charm for all the crimes that he has committed and will not let Baby go. Therein lies the rub. I think it will be almost impossible for people to not love this movie. Even the women will fall under "Baby Diver's" spell as they will identify with Baby's trying to break free of his bondage and take to the highway with the love of his young life. |

Spider-Man: Homecoming
colbalt91
|
Well it's no secret that they wanted to start all over again with Spider-Man in this new film reboot. They wanted a younger Spider-Man so they could start in high school and now they have Tom Holland as Spider-Man. And when I say reboot they went hog-wild. The cast of characters surrounding Spider-Man is much different in their ethnic diversity than ever before imagined. I guess they figured that if Spiderman were to start today, the classrooms of today would reflect what they have surrounded Peter Parker with in his classroom. The only white character leftover is Betty Brant, played by Angourie Rice. Rice was the one I predicted could steal the picture from Tom Holland in my review of "The Nice Guys." So in this film they have wisely relegated her to a couple of lines and some distant shots. They are obviously saving her for a later film. The spider suit is also a major character in this movie. This suit was given to Peter Parker by Tony Stark AKA Iron Man. In many ways the suit is a copy of the Iron Man suit minus the armor. This suit can do many things that I have never seen before in other movies or the comic book. The suit even has its own Siri who calls herself Carrie in this film. This suit steals the movie away from the teenage Peter Parker. One of the climactic moments of "Spider-Man: Homecoming" is when Peter Parker has to go it alone without his suit in order to earn his stripes. Think the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #33. Another scene-stealer is Michael Keaton as the Vulture. He does a really fine job as one of Spider-Man's early villains. An underling of the Vulture is the character of The Shocker. In this movie he comes off more as a buffoon who accidentally gets some shock cuffs and tries to be a villain, but doesn't last too long. He is more comedy relief. In keeping with the starting over again with Spiderman aspect, this very young Spiderman is shown as very green and quite clumsy. If it were not for dumb luck and a helpful Iron Man this film would have ended shortly after it started. There is a lot of action and this film will keep you occupied, but as a comic book purist who has been with Peter Parker since the beginning it will take a while for me to adjust. For newcomers and people who are only familiar with the Spider-Man movies it will be an easier adjustment. This movie does have the fun aspects of Spider-Man as he swings around the town and has his smart mouth going a mile a minute. And the CGI is great. edited by colbalt91 on 7/4/2017 edited by colbalt91 on 7/4/2017 edited by colbalt91 on 7/4/2017 edited by colbalt91 on 7/4/2017 |

Atomic Blonde starring Charlize Theron
colbalt91
|
The new Charlize Theron movie, "Atomic Blonde," is a fast-moving spy adventure with plenty of hand to hand combat in almost every scene. Theron's character is a British agent sent into East Berlin five days before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Her mission is to retrieve a list containing the names of British agents that have been compromised, and also ferret out who among the names is the double agent that has been causing problems for British intelligence. As I mentioned there is a fight scene almost every couple of minutes with Charlize Theron. If she opens the door there is a fight scene. If she walks down the stairs there is another fight scene. If she gets into a car there is another fight scene and probably a car chase. This keeps the movie rocking even though after a while you start to wonder how it can be humanly possible for someone to take as much punishment as her character does and still be standing up by the end of the film. Helping to keep the rocking going along is the rocking(depressing?) 80's soundtrack. The music used has an undertone of dismalness and bleakness as sung by groups such as New Order, David Bowie and even After The Fire with their hit from the 80's "Der Kommissar" which plays perfectly into this movie. Amazingly, Flock of Seagulls, who have never gotten much respect musically, have snuck another song onto another soundtrack. Earlier this month they had a song on the soundtrack of "Spider-Man: Homecoming." Charlize Theron's character even has time for some girl on girl action with the actress Sofia Boutella, who recently starred in the movie "The Mummy" with Tom Cruise. So, yes, there is some female nudity, and no male nudity in this movie. The movie's overall hue, to show the darkness of East Berlin, is that quasi gray bluish tint that sometimes as used in scary movies. This movie will keep your attention though sometimes it gets complicated in the aspect of who is the double agent and who can be trusted in this film about spy vs spy. Atomic blonde is worth viewing. edited by colbalt91 on 7/28/2017 edited by colbalt91 on 7/28/2017 |

The Dark Tower

You might as well forget this movie. Traditionally August has been known as the month to dump movies that the studio's feel will be ignored. This is the month that families are busy getting ready for school and purchasing school supplies, and stuff like that, and they don't have that much time to go see a movie. That way if a movie fails you can blame it on that. Forget that the first "Guardians of the Galaxy" opened up in August many years ago. Simply put, the plot of this movie is good versus evil. Idris Elba plays the good, someone called the Gunslinger, and Matthew McConaughey plays the bad, a guy named Walter who wants to destroy the world as we know it. Yes, you have the good, and you have the bad, and the ugly is the movie. This movie, "The Dark Tower," is based on a series of Stephen King novels. They were also made into comic books. That is the most positive thing I can say about this film. If you take Matthew McConaughey away from a surfer role or the role of somebody from Texas, he is out of his waters. Perhaps, this movie would have had a better chance with Matthew McConaughey playing the Gunslinger. As an evil being, McConaughey's laconic speech and slightly Texas accent that slips through occasionally, does not work. The length of this movie is very short compared with the much longer length movies have been lately. This movie is a little bit more than an hour and a half long. "The Dark Tower" moves along quite quickly, but you do not care about anything that is happening on the screen. "The Dark Tower" is definitely a movie to avoid. |

I remember in the 80's when I would visit a friend and when it rained, for just for a short time, cars would be stranded in the streets as the water would rise up and flood the car engines. Houston is over paved with concrete and the water has nowhere to go. Amid all this flooding that is occuring, there are bound to be major comic book collections wiped out in houses, apartment buildings, or storage units. So get ready for a comic book values to slowly increase. |
