Weather Bird Comics

I'm not familiar with those at the GCD comics linked to above, but I did save a few scans while compiling my web page for Charlton Shoe Store Giveaway comics.
Here's a Weather-Bird Comic wraparound on a copy of MD #3 (EC Comics) Notice the staple placement. The cover was likely added later and not bound on the comic originally. It does not have an EC cover underneath the cover you see.

Here's a Weather-Bird comic that does appear to be bound onto the comic in the original binding process.

Here's a neat Harvey Shoe store giveaway cover..

I've been trying to collect Charlton Comic scans of all the possible Blue Bird Shoe Store Giveaway comics... The list is what ~may~ exist. I have a long way to go, but it's fun filling in the missing covers.

It appears to me that the shoe store giveaways started as a means to utilize remaindered comic interiors at a time when the comics industry was in turmoil.
As time went by, I believe they did start doing the cover swap during production with generic covers. Eventually, it becomes evident that the comics started being produced directly for the shoe store market with unique covers.
Harvey did a lot of promotional comics in general.
The comics industry collapsed in the early 50's with Charlton buying up all the failing publishers. They'd buy a publisher and print all the issues that were in production, and usually cancel the series after that.
There's some kind of connection between EC (who was struggling towards the end) and Charlton. We know Charlton printed the first printing of Impact #1 for EC. It has a white logo vs. the yellow logo on the 2nd printing.
I have a Valor #2 with a Charlton pre-code Lawbreakers comic on the interior. It is mis-cut, but it does not appear to be a "married" cover done in the aftermarket.

ENS (Export Newspaper Services) was publishing Spanish language versions of EC Comics.

Originally they were published in the U.S.,but around the time EC stopped publishing comics, production shifted to Mexico and the Valor title continued on doing Spanish language Charlton reprints.

I guess my point is that an EC comic with a Weatherbird outer cover may have had nothing to do with EC if Charlton printed other EC's. I'm still trying to find out what the connection is between EC, Charlton, & ENS. We only know about Charlton printing Impact #1. We know Bill Gaines was extremely displeased with the printing quality on it. Did Charlton print other EC's later that were acceptable to Bill Gaines? The Valor #2 with a Charlton interior is pretty strange unless they were printed at the same location. Did Charlton print comics for ENS? These are things I'm trying to find out.
If you factor Hurricane Diane hitting the Charlton facility in 1955 and almost putting them out of business, that would put them into a huge state of distress. It would create a need to open new doors of revenue.
I'm sure Western & Harvey were all in the same mode of survival and towards the late 50's saw a good market in promotional comics. edited by Defiant1 on 8/2/2021 |

Now that is some serious history lessons that one would only get here!! Thanks Defiant, Does make it difficult on how these comics should be added, along with the obviously hundreds of "others" that are out there as well. Well, the one I have is bagged, boarded and sitting comfortably on my shelf to be added at a later date!!

--- The later comics produced directly for shoe store chains would be easy to list. It's just difficult to find scans or images in general. I'm pretty sure my Blue Bird list is going to be accurate, but it appears that 8 variants exist of every issue.
The shoe store giveaways that are swapped out in the normal binding process or the ones that appear to be made from remaindered comics (leftover interiors) afterwards are going to be tough because some might be a lot rarer than others.
Here is a rather goofy checklists I created of remaindered EC comics bound as Rural Home's Blazing Comics #5 http://comicchecklist.atwebpages.com/EC/Rural_Home/Rural_Home_Remaindered_EC_Comics.html
That is just the EC related comics. There are non-EC comics that have the same cover.
Some cover galleries are cool to look at, some aren't.
I like to list everything when I'm compiling my checklists. |

Amazing Fantasy #15?

It was drawn by Steve Ditko around the same time Jack kirby's cover was drawn. It dates back to 1962. It would appear in fanzines or be shown inside some Marvel comics, but it was never used as an actual cover until Amazing Spider-Man #700. It was used as an incentive cover and retailers had to order a lot of the regular version to get the Ditko variant. |

I only own one Australian price variant for a Marvel Comic. It shipped to Tucker GA instead of Australia. Proof that they are printed in the U.S. The only scan I've uploaded to the web wasn't cropped.

I most likely uploaded a png file and Tumblr changed it for some reason.
I use Irfanview for most of my image viewing offline. If you open an image file that is incorrectly named, it will offer to rename it to the correct file format. |

I'm seeing online that there is a variant for EC's Saddle Justice #6
CPG has the version with a Comics Code emblem under the price.

Some people have posted scans or photographs of a version without the comics code emblem under the price.

The silver print production art has the emblem penciled in.
Issue prior to #6 did not have the emblem. Issues after #6 did have it. It appears that #6 may have went to press without it a first and later added it. |

And yet people are buying them. If no one was greedy we'd still be paying cover price for things
The value of a book worth more than cover price is not from greed that is just what the market says it's actual worth is. Greed is someone ripping off their fan base and asking well over current market prices knowing that some of their fans will fall for it and think they are getting a good deal. Greed is when LCS are pulling books on the day of their release and telling their customers they sold out only to turn around and sell the books a week later for high prices. There is a difference between greed and the value of books going up.
If I'm running a business and trying to stock desirable comics that customers want, I will buy what I can for the price I can. If I have to buy comics at market value, I have to mark it up in price to make a profit and sustain my business.
This is not greed. It is running a business. Does it make you pay more? Yes. Does eBay make retailers pay more to restock? Yes.
What do you think a comic business is supposed to do?
Try to sell unpopular garbage that collectors don't care about? Fruitlessly hope that someone will want to sell a hot comic to them for 50% of what they can get on eBay?
This is how business works.
You buy product to sell at the cheapest price you can.
You stock products people actually want.
You mark it up standard percentages so that you pay business expenses and make a profit.
Profit is not greed. It's what sustains the economy and keeps people gainfully employed.
In the 90's I saw a store sell out of the "Death of Superman" issue. Customers who had not pre-ordered the comic were demanding they get a copy or they'd do business elsewhere.
The store owner was buying back the comics they had just sold to customers and paying them cover price or more. The customers who didn't care as much about it were getting their money back or even a small profit so the store could restock and meet the demand of their customers. The store would mark the issues double the price they had paid to buy them back. A $3 comic became a $6 comic instantly. Customers were still demanding the comic and threatening to shop elsewhere. The cycle repeated and by the end of the evening, the store was charging about $18.
Keep in mind that if a store has to buy back a comic for cover price, they made no profit at all on the initial sale. They lost money. They have to mark it up or they are just giving comics away. |

I'm getting tired of James Gunn movies. His past is going to get him blacklisted from Hollywood. More stuff surfaced after this 2021 movie was released.
I saw at a one day comic show that someone was selling a Peacemaker #1 for $500. I laughed and cringed at the same time. |

OPG used to intentionally include false information so the could catch people stealing their information. When Jon Warren started working on Wizard's price guide in the mid-90's, he wanted cover scans of first & last issues so he could confirm they existed. |

Taskmaster,
People like you are one reason I do not sell online.
The deals you want to get are the ones you are running off.
If a comic is going for $100 and I only have $3 invested in it, I've been known to sell things like that for $50 to cut someone a deal.
I can assure you that your price would be $200. I have zero patience for people who make an offer and don't follow through. Zero.
