Why Do YOU Collect Comics?

Nostalgia. I bought comics for a few months before discovering Marvel. When I discovered Marvel, I found out they lived in a world where any characters that I like could cross paths. I was in awe. I bought them regularly until I started dating. I could not afford to take a girl out and afford to buy comics. I dropped out. Many years went by and I worked in dead end jobs. After quitting two jobs back to back and cussing out management, I was unemployed. I had no regrets, but I was essentially broke at that point. I pulled my comics out of storage and read them. That was when nostalgia kicked in and I wanted all of the comics I could not afford as a kid. I started trading duplicates I had from years earlier and started trading for some of those comics I wanted. I was able to do this even though I had almost no income. I traded 70's and 80's books for a Strange tales #110 and I left the store in shock. That fueled the fire. Eventually, I got a decent job, but still became very shrewd in negotiating with comic book shops. I eventually acquired Hulk #1, Fantastic Four #1, Amazing Fantasy #15 and a lot of other lesser books that I thought I'd never own. I am not a fan of modern comics at all and I buy VERY little these days. I still have the nostalgia factor going and buy back issues occasionally. I'm more into comics history now. I have no interest in buying comics that depreciate in value. There are enough comics out there that I can be selective and only collect good stuff that (at the very least) has a potential to increase in value. This is VERY important to me because when I was unemployed, my comics were the only money I had. I have more comics than I could ever read in he rest of my lifetime. Occasionally, I do read something new to my collection, but it's usually an EC or a pre-hero Marvel comic. My guess is that I own about 10,000 comics.

This is very cool!
I got lucky. The seller listed it poorly and it looked like he was selling one page. You had to read his listing very carefully to discover he was selling 3 pages. I was able to buy three pages for the price you'd normally have to pay for one. Comic art this old is typically larger than modern comic art. I have an oversized scanner, but I still had to scan the art in three passes and stitch the separate images together to get the images you see above. I think these were drawn the same year Max Gaines died in a boating accident.

For EC fans, here are the FBI files on William Gaines. He was under investigation for sedition:

It reflects what consumers are paying. It also reflects that fact that definitive lists of what exists has not been fully compiled and put into a friendly format so that collectors can reference that information to chase down sets. I think that the value will spike and become higher for these as collectors get up to speed and know exactly what exists.

The Phantom isn't as popular in the U.S. as he is in Australia. For that reason, the supply probably meets the demand and I would not expect them to be worth much.

So You Want to Sell Your Comics?

You really should. A store may have a Groo collector that is frustrated because they have none. A store is going to look at your collection and decide how much they can sell immediately before making an offer. |

Understandable. The site & board used to be really good. Something self-destructed. I've been posting just to see what's going on. So far, I'm as clueless as everyone else. |

This is my copy which would have been purchased off of a spinner rack when it came out. There may be a reprint version distributed by Whitman. It would have come in a sealed plastic bag branded with the Whitman logo and sold through department stores with 2 other comics in the bag.

Fantastic Four #66 & 67 are well known and overrated. Warlock does not actually appear in his golden skin form in either.
The lesser known books to have are Thor #165 & 166 with #165 being an extremely wise purchase in high grade since it has a black cover and would be extremely hard to find in high grade.

I'm still disappointed in a friend who bought a huge Golden Age to resell and he didn't keep the Sensation #1 for himself. He passed it along in the deal. Why!!! |

I can't decide if that's cool.
Charlton. Early pre-code. At their laziest... They had the lowest quality standards, and low pay, and lazy editors... Some creators used Charlton to tell stories the others wouldn't do. And some phoned it in - do 3 Charlton pages in the same time it that to do 1 DC page and the hourly rate was pretty nice.
We got a cop/detective comic - from the UK, in a half-hearted attempt to be interesting. The inspector is holding a package with a clock - a cop runs in with an urgent warning... I'm supposed to drop my hard earned dime to learn the Big Reveal?
It's not a clock - it's a bomb. Right? Wow. Impressive level of not caring.
Think I'm digging the special Charlton quirkiness. Bonus points for a cover that didn't age well.
The inspector is smoking a pipe - that's not allowed anymore. Law enforcement finds a ticking package - first assumption is 'probably a clock, I'd best pick it up and shake it'. lol...
That should count as a "terrorist attack" cover. Is that a thing yet
The Mallrat promo cards are neat - didn't know those exist.
Years ago I started making comic company cover galleries. I'd start collecting scans and figure out what the rarities were in the process. I discovered Topps promo comics. Someone pointed me to a Splatterball with no foil on the cover from DEFIANT. I discovered that Miracle on Broadway existed from Broadway Comics. I found out a My Secret #2 exists from Atlas. It becomes an interesting revelation when you take one company and focus on bringing a cover gallery to completion. Someone challenged me to create a Charlton Cover Gallery. Charlton was a company that had lousy quality product, but I liked he fact that they existed. I liked the fact that someone made a drag racing comic or romance comics. There are only a few that I'd like to own. The ones that interest me the most are the short lived series like this that came out around the time the whole industry was imploding. They'd buy out other publishers and publish whatever stories had already been completed "in the can" so to speak. Also, Charlton's facility was severely flooded during the 50's and it crippled their production. The low print run and short lived series from the 50's interest me especially if it was an oddball theme. Kirby also worked for them for a short period after they bought up a publisher that he worked for. If I was to encounter a ZaZa the Mystic comic, I'd probably jump on that chance unless it was horribly overpriced. I doubt I will ever come close to finishing my Charlton Cover Gallery within my lifetime.
I've never seen the Mallrats cards online other than the set I have posted. I think I snagged several packs that were wrapped in clear cellophane. I only opened the one pack and that's the full set. |
