What do you consider Wolverine's first appearance? I think its incredible Hulk 180. His appearance in that book is more than just a cameo.

I grew up with 181 being the key book that everyone wanted. Fair or not that is in my opinion the de-facto first appearance. I always ask myself which issue would I rather have a 180 or 181 and that is an easy decision.

Well, when I bought #180 & 181 off the rack in 1974, I obviously thought his first appearance was 180. After years of learning the true difference between the terms "first cameo" and "first full" appearances, #181 is obviously his first "full" and #180 is his first "cameo", its only one panel. Why do you believe its more than just a cameo? (sorry it didn't have me signed in)

I don't know why the industry and people in general don't recognize 180 as his first appearance. I mean he makes a full head to toe appearance and he even speaks. A cameo appearance would be him standing in the shadows. Or his fist busting through a wall or you may see a side profile of his mask in the dark. But he made a full appearance.

Even if 180 were to be recognized as his first appearance, the market would likely still put more value on 181 because he's in the entire issue and it has a great cover. It's the same with Venom, who first appears in ASM 299, but it's 300 that everyone wants to own.

As an aside, when I was younger, 180 was the more valuable book. My No. 11 Overstreet Price Guide has 180 at $12, and 181 and 182 at $5.75.

#180 IS his "first" appearance but it is a "cameo" appearance, it is one panel and he is not SHOWN interacting with any other character. Even if this "panel" was considered his first appearance, #180 still wouldn't be "IT" This same panel was in many other comic books before this one (as ads) but they are not considered his first appearance neither. Gambit is in many panels in UXM Annual #14 but its still considered a cameo, he's not interacting with anybody. Same argument...… An actor in a movie can be in many different scenes but if he isn't interacting with the other characters, its still considered a "cameo" appearance. That won't change. So I think what's going on here is, most people have a problem with the definition of "cameo". Sometimes a characters first "cameo" appearance is worth more, sometimes its the first "full" appearance, so the value comes from which one is more desirable..……………. Time has shown collectors consider #181 over #180 as his "most wanted" appearance, that won't (and shouldn't) ever change. (even if I have 3 nice #180s and only one #181:sillysmile

So I have to ask, do you own 180 and not 181?

The argument is interesting and obviously those two books have switched back and forth over the years. To me, either one is a great book to own. A cameo is a brief appearance that could be in shadows but it could be a single panel of Wolverine. By definition only, 180 is a cameo to me.

I own 180, 181 and 182 all cgc 8.0 even if I didn't own any of those books I would still consider 180 his first true appearance. I think people lean towards 181 only because of the iconic cover.

Does anyone consider an add a first appearance? Or a preview a first appearance?
