Atrocitus becomes the very first red lantern out of pure hatred of the Guardians whose android police force exterminated his kind . Atrocitus then converts other beings including green lanterns into red lanterns by unlocking their deep inner hatred. Atrocitus and his army of red lanterns makes their first strike at their enemies as Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Kilowog and the other green lanterns are ambushed by the Sinestro corps as they attempt to free Sinestro from captivity in route to his execution. Both sides are then decimated by the arrival of Atrocitus and his red lanterns and as Hal Jordan drifts through space beaten and his ring drained he is saved at the last minute by the arrival of Saint Walker, the Blue Lantern.
