Have Comic Books Peaked In Market Value?

Excellent! I guess a major factor in trying to determine if these comics will continue to climb in value is; " Is there a generation of collectors coming up behinds us"? I'm 44 years old and I'm guessing that the majority of collectors here are around my age give or take 15 years. I'm interested in knowing if there are teenagers or younger interested in collecting these Golden/Silver/Bronze age books? Is there a future in collecting beyond the current crop of collectors? I think the answer to this question, in part, answers whether comics will continue to increase in value.

Will the current teens and 20s want comics in the distant future? It's an interesting point. Right now they mostly don't care about physical stuff. Gigantic collections of movies, music, games... all downloaded or on the cloud. Will they want real world stuff when they get old?
The answer to that question is the future of this hobby/industry.
If you believe the answer is "no", kids will not want physical product as they get older and the current crop of collectors "age out' of the hobby then at some point the market will crash....probably crash hard.
If you believe the answer is "yes" than we're probably safe and the market will continue a general upward trend in value.
If you equate music CD's to comics (not really a fair comparison...) then we know what happened. Massive drop in CD sales. Maybe vintage vinyl is more of an accurate comparison. Vinyl (I believe) has been on the rise after a huge drop.
Are there better examples to compare to comics?
UPDATE: This is not to suggest that even if the values of the old comics crash that the collecting hobby ceases to exist. people collect because they love the art form.

I hope everyone can see that To me anyway , its pretty awesome , the only comic really bad is the Journey into Mystery. The rest are 5+ and the Avengers #1 is in pretty good shape , but i dont want to jinx myself . There is a comic con near where i live and and Stan Lee will be there , so i was wondering , would it be better to get them signed if i could , then CGC them ?
Ahhhh.....the old question pops up again...."to sign or not to sign".
For the holy grail keys you have I'm in the "not to sign" camp.
I know its Stan Lee and all but signatures are still ink on comics. I have signed books (Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, John Romita etc.) but these books are newer and not holy grails.
Personally, I'm OK with signed books but not for the big books like you have.

Does comicspriceguide have any data on members collections and people under the age of 30? How does that data compare with people's collections over the age of 30? edited by genuinearticlecomics on 3/3/2016 |

So my uncle passed away and I inherited all his old comics. They are all from the Silver age. I have been doing a lot of research and some of them are quite valuable. The best one I have found is: 1960 Green Lantern 1
I am hoping that someone on here can help me try and find a value for it. I took my best guess and placed it around a CGC of 8.5
It has a crease from a bend in the lower right corner, and some slight imperfections on the spine. Other than that it is in great shape. The pages are in mint condition, and the back cover is perfect.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I know NOTHING about comics!
I'm sorry to hear about your uncle. I don't think that comic would fetch an 8.5 from CGC. It's likely closer to 6-6.5 but certainly submit the book. Graded books will be able to command slightly higher prices because of the confidence the buyer has on the grade.
Good luck!! |

Any prices compared to anything 10/15 years ago will be "ridiculous". You can't expect prices to remain the same for over a decade for anything. |

Are you saying you made the $300 offer on books?
If so, maybe the $300 offer was a low ball offer and you're being ignored.
Is that possible?
What books were you trying to.buy?
Can you guys get less sarcastic?? (I know my books I've been buying and selling for over 20 years and collecting for close to 40)
Daredevil #168 Daredevil #181
And some other Daredevil's he had his prices all added up to the $300 so if the buyer wants that and the books are 9.4-9.6 like he stated and someone with a good rep wants to buy them what's the problem then?
It's not sarcasm but you're asking us to explain why a seller didn't respond to your offer. He may have thought your offer was low. He may have changed his mind on selling those books. He may not sell internationally. He may have accidentally over graded/under graded the books and chose to neglect offers. He may have already sold the books and forgot to pull listing. He may have been on vacation for 2 weeks... And on and on and on..... edited by genuine_article_comics on 3/18/2016
Yes it is sarcasm because I've been on this site BEFORE the crash but just haven't had a need to post in the forums until now so I thought a straight forward answer would have been nice you should have answered like this instead of the other way because it comes off as being sarcastic...
My apologies. I certainly did not intend to come across as sarcastic and I was sincerely asking if it's possible your offer could be considered low. All is good. I hope the seller contacts you. |

I'm with you on this! I don't know for sure but I'd guess that comicspriceguide.com and Overstreet do not regard eBay as the sole/main indicator on market value. Personally, I tend to lean more toward eBay "sold listings" as accurately capturing true market value as it is a global auction house. There is also Atomic Avenue to consider. |

having cracked several, I can say for sure the inner is not mylar, my guess would be it is the same makeup as a polybag. This is probably why they suggest to have your books re-slabbed every 7-10 years or so.
Ahh!!! Perfect!! That's what I was looking for. I crack every slabbed book I purchase and place the comic in mylar. I'm familiar with the poly vs. mylar debate but knowing that the inner sleeve in slabbed books is likely poly, I'm more confident in my decision to crack the slab and put the comic in mylar. I wasn't aware it's suggested to re-slab books every 7-10 years. that makes perfect sense in deducing the sleeve is likely poly.
Thanks so much!!! edited by genuinearticlecomics on 4/8/2016 |

Hi Everyone,
I need help confirming the 1st appearance of the DC character Major Force. I'm getting conflicting results between these 2 comics.
CAPTAIN ATOM ANNUAL #1 (1987)
CAPTAIN ATOM #12 (1987)
Can anyone confirm which one of these books is the 1st appearance?
Thank you!
Now that you've brought it up GAC i'm getting the same result I have Cap. Atom Annual #1 but not #12. Cap. Atom #12 is published in February 1988. Cap. Atom Annual #1 is also 1988 (not sure what month though), Comic book DB says his 1st app. is the Annual. DC Wiki & Wikipedia say's #12. Sorry i can't confirm unless someone knows the exact month it was published.
Hold the horses.......Just found this on comic vine http://comicvine.gamespot.com/captain-atom-annual-1-the-dark-side-of-the-force/4000-28997/ Published in January 1988 (maybe the Annual is the first app. of Major Force).
I like him as a villain, A true sleeper. Need to find #12 now, Best to have both issue's just in case. edited by Gilgandra on 4/15/2016
Thanks Gilgandra!! It looks like the Annual just may be the true 1st appearance. I do have both but one of them has to be the true 1st appearance. Both are super cheap in high grades right now so I want to pick up a few more. I'm going under the impression the Annual is the true 1st appearance so the hunt is on....thanks again man!! edited by genuinearticlecomics on 4/15/2016 |

Personally, in general, I'm not a fan of signatures on comics unless ofcourse it's Jack Kirby or Steve Ditko. But that's me. If you're looking at flipping the book check eBay sold listings for her or other actors signed comics. If it's just for you to enjoy then go for it. I suspect signatures of people on comics who didn't have anything to do with the comic creatively will likely command less than if they were. Good luck!! |

But that's an anomaly that shouldn't be in my opinion. I agree with everything you stated, especially "......despite the extreme scarcity of copies in a solid VG and better of the run between 45/6 and 1961. Heck most DC titles are hard to find in nice shape in this period and generally command multiples of guide and yet are never reflected in the guide and, IMHO, for how hard they are to find considerably cheaper than they should be.....".
I'm trying to make sense of something that doesn't make sense to me. Why are these scarce comics of characters we all love, during a time where comics are arguably facing unprecedented popularity, not worth more? They should be! Make it happen! ;-)
But in all seriousness, I can't imagine these books not exploding in the future. It may be 20 years down the line but it wouldn't make sense to me if they didn't. edited by genuinearticlecomics on 8/11/2016 |
