Comic Milestones that go uncollected?

Why do collectors ignore books that represent huge changes in thinking in comics?
For instance, I am reading The Bronze Age of DC Comics by Paul Levitz that I picked up at Ollie's Bargain Outlet for a crazy $9.99 by the way! Anyway, I digress, Levitz is talking about the Bronze age in sweeping movements and then he mentions the TV show Roots which was the first highly successful TV limited Series. It gave birth to the comic book limited series, because they were like this is a cool concept. So DC publishes the very first of a new breed of comic when they published Superman's World of Krypton vol 1 (1979). Before you get dismissive, I want you to think about this a bit. IF this limited series had not been launched, Frank Miller's Ronin would not have been launched a few years later! IF you want to talk about impact, what if the Watchmen had never been accepted as a 12 issue arc of a finite story. I just looks at the ripples and I think, why in the world is the very first limited series not being collected for what its impact was on the industry? This is just once instance, but I am sure you can name many others where something has this HUGE impact yet goes relatively unnoticed by collectors today. What do you think?

Poll Question: Spending More Time or Less Time

I am a teacher who has to work from home now, and I am stuck at my computer in that process. Which involves endless waiting on students. So...yes I have spent a lot more time and money on comics. Enough to get the attention of my spouse! I have also bagged and boarded a lot more books too. Which means more Amazon purchases for supplies. I never had this much time without someone dragging me away from it.

Has the original art supplanted the comics?

I am an artist and an art teacher, and frankly I do not believe you can compare fairly the collecting of comic books to the collecting of one of a kind artwork. They simply are two different animals. I enjoy the thought of collecting original comic art, but not the price tags. As an art teacher, the art I am drawn to is not normally the sequential variety with a bunch of people on it and square/rectangular panels. If I bought original art it would have to be splash pages and covers. Sequential art is great in the comic itself, but it was never meant to be in a frame on a wall. There are some obvious exceptions for this, some artist are so gifted in creating page layouts that their sequential work is as much if not more artistic than their splash pages. Neal Adams comes to mind. At either rate, I love art and I love comics. The two are heavily related, no doubt. However, they are not the same. I would never be able to afford the art I love the most even if it were available for sale. Which makes collecting the original comic were I get every wonderful page all that more attractive.

When do you stop and smell the roses?

I was reading the Blog post https://blog.comicspriceguide.com/how-to-tell-what-comics-are-hot/ for the second time, with nearly the same reactions I had the first time. Which is this, man I should have bought that a year ago or 10 years ago. This book or that book has been on my 'bucket' list for years, I just did not get around to it. I have 16,338 comics, not including duplicates. When is enough, enough? Recently, I have been wandering into my comic book room (yes I have a room...you do not put 16k comics under your bed), and I was thinking I should spend more time in here! Instead of cringing at the book I did not buy 5 years ago for a song. I should enjoy the waif of old comics in my room and pour through the countless volumes that I have procured over the years. Spend some time with what I have instead of pining for what I have not.

I have been doing just that every day for a an hour or more a day, and you know its fun. I've been pulling comics and grading them. Pulling out the duplicates, and trying to make some room in the overstuffed boxes! But I still find myself wanting what I haven't got. Human nature I suppose. Still, maybe I will spend a little more time 'smelling the roses'.
