Errors from grading companies (CGC/CBCS/PGX)

If a printer mis-cuts a comic, it doesn't always lower the grade. You can have a poor specimen from a printer that is still NM.
I don't agree with that. I think date stamps are a defect. Grading companies don't unless it's a particularly bad and ugly example.
In the early 80's, there was a grade called "Pristine Mint" and it was described as particularly rare and abnormal. Now, the "Pristine Mint" grade is called "Mint" and all the designated grades have shifted down one grade from what they were 40 years ago. |

I make cover galleries for comics and there are inherent problems with trying to simply use the alphabet to designate cover variants (i.e. A, B C etc.) I started using the letter "N" to designate newsstand versions when I name the image files, but there are even issues with that. If you look at X-Men #1 from the 90's there are 5 direct version covers and 4 newsstand versions. With comics like Beavis & Butthead #1, there is a 1st printing newsstand cover and there is a 2nd printing newsstand cover with color variations. It would be very difficult to assign letters in a way that is consistent across all titles and all possible situations which exist. edited by Defiant1 on 1/6/2021 edited by Defiant1 on 1/6/2021 |

I honestly don't understand the Turtles...

I remember when TMNT #1 came out. There was a stack of about 100 copies on the shelf. I considered getting it since I got the joke, but it was B&W. I was not wanting to collect B&W comics. I passed on getting it but smiled a little at seeing it.
Shortly afterwards, I quit collecting comics and forgot about the characters. One day a musician friend asked me if I wanted to buy a cassette of music he'd produced for another guy we both knew. I said "yes" and the name of the band was "TMNT" I asked how they knew about TMNT and he confirmed it was based on the comic characters. I was stunned. I didn't know anyone else had ever heard of them. |

Rest in Peace. I'm not familiar with his work. I have Black Diamond #1, but none higher.

I quit submitting missing items because the delay was too long before they showed up. The stuff I have is often so obscure that most people won't care if it's missing anyway. |

My loss was watching two episodes and thinking It might be better than the teasers in the commercial. I paid nothing to see it.
I'd rather watch paint dry.
I don't care about the actors.
It looked like another "OMG! Were trapped in an illusion" plot that I've seen played out a dozen times elsewhere.
I don't need to sit through pathetic unfunny parodies of situation comedies from 60 years ago.
If you are going to get to the "reveal", find a better way. It's utter garbage in my opinion. |

Marvel VS DC!

The problem with DC is how overpowered they represent their heroes. That is the reason that their villains are so great, they have to try and figure out how to beat impossible odds. This was bad enough with Superman being the answer to everything and it's getting worse as Flash is becoming more powerful with his Infinite Mass Punch. DCs villains have to be better to pose any kind of threat.
Another factor for Marvel superiority is in its Editing. Compare the number of necessary ret-cons that DC had to go through to correct continuity to Marvel. Most of Marvel's come from a desire to tell a different story. DC had to make corrections or discount history.
Yup. The flaws at DC were built in back in the very beginning, though. There was not a concept of all of them even existing together in the same "universe," originally. Like you say, having a Superman makes everyone else a waste of time. AND, they are unable to fix it. Even in the recent movie Justice League, my sons walked out of the theater with me (after hearing me talk of this problem with Superman for years) and my 18 year old kid says "So, they were getting their butts kicked until a Kryptonian showed up!"
But, guess who my favorite is.
Superman.
That said, the first Wonder Woman was a great superhero film.
Hey Ox.I typically don't read your posts. I don't rate anything you write as being worth the effort. I've dropped back to just spot-checking the posts here about every 2 or 3 months.
You are welcome to respond to this post, but most likely I won't even know you did.

I buy anything oversized, so these are some of my latest aquisitions. The are about the size of a Marvel Treasury comic, but much thinner. They reprint newspaper comic strips. All from Pacific Comics Club.

A week or so ago, I stopped into a local comic shop while I was waiting for new tires at a shop nearby. I saw an old EC comic on the wall. The color palette was off and the width on it was that of a more modern comic. I thought that was odd, so I look at it more closely and realized it must be a Canadian reprint from the 50's. I asked the shop to let me see the indicia and it was indeed a Superior comics reprint from the 1950's. I've been wanting one for years since I've been scouring the web looking for scans to complete my cover gallery. I shelled out the high price. It's got color fading in one corner. It's got a tear on the cover, and it's either the worst miscut I've ever owned or it was trimmed decades ago. I didn't analyze the edge too closely, because I didn't care. These are rare!
Weird Fantasy #14 (Superior Comics)

Unfortunately, the cut is so bad and the defects are too bad for me to use the scan on my cover gallery. Still, I'm glad to own one. Did I say these are rare? LOL! I haven't scanned the indicia yet. I plan to do so.
My index of what might exist is here: http://comicchecklist.atwebpages.com/EC/Superior/Superior_EC_Index.html

You can't go wrong buying key crossover issues that old. It may not skyrocket in price, but the desire for collectors to own it will stay steady. |
