I am not an admin, but I play on on TV... The problem of how to identify issues contines to be a hot topic here. In spirit of "teaching you to fish" instead of giving you stuff, I suggest you check out the explaination of the comic book indica here: http://www.comicconnect.com/load_page.php?page=faqtitle Perhaps CPG should bring back their similar explanation - seems to have been lost in the crash of October 2015. Or is it here and I am missing it? KDS |

Hmm. In my opinion this sounds like a case of an individual deliberately putting a cover and a coverless comic together. The reason I believe this is checking references. 1) Check here - no verified recall of FF #246 http://www.recalledcomics.com/ComicsByPublisher.php#Marvel 2) Check the Marvel Wiki - no mention of variant issues. http://marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Fantastic_Four_Vol_1_246 3) Check sellers - no mention of variants https://www.mycomicshop.com/search?tid=82151&pgi=201 Also check CPG - yep - no variants. Sorry I think you have a phony KDS. |

I went to a farm auction over the weekend where they were mainly auctioning off old furniture, tools, and household items. However I spotted three boxes of comics setting out in the sun. Lucky you ! Good job.

I thought I'd get all three boxes for $50, but an antique dealer saw me looking and bid me up to $400! The dealer recognized value - but to him it was risk/rewad number at - what $1 each? The dealer anticipated spoilage.

I Especially the later 60's to early 70's. Several have the UPC code cut out or the cover ripped in half (not the older ones thank goodness). No idea why UPC code would be ripped - perhaps retailer scrapped it or marked it from themselves. tonicmole wrote:
IAlso, the cover will be cut or stapled wrong. Maybe the original owner worked at a grocery store and took home the defective comics. Maybe they were merely dumpster divers? I don't know. Comics that were cut wrong were not unusual in the 1960's and 1970s - mechanical presses were used similar to newspapers presses. Just part of the business. Some folks though the wrong cut ones would be worth a lot some day. They were wrong - they are readers worth almost nothing. I have had a few myself. tonicmole wrote:
Anyways, just seeing Avengers #1 got me pretty excited. Unfortunately, about 1/4th of the cover was clipped out for some reason, but otherwise in readable shape. Ripping the whole cover or a portion of the cover and sending back to the wholesale distributor was the way to track inventory for the wholesaler. The retailer got the price back for the one that did not sell.
See the forum is fun, and education tool.
Congrats again on your find. KDS |

Comic Book Eras

My nickel's worth...
There is no argument that the Silver Age of comics started with the return of Super-heroes in Showcase #96. Well and good.
There is no single comic issue that started the Bronze Age of comics. One argument is additional of social relevance in the 1970's. with Amazing Spider-Man comics that failed to recieve the comic code of approval and this one from DC that provided social relevance of the time on topics like prison reform and drugs.

There is even less agreement on the specific data of the start of the modern era.
Some would say it was Marvel's Secret Wars in 1984

Some would say it came in 1986 with DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths.

However - us old time folks who lived it at one time agreed that this is the first Modern Age Comics. Why? It the the first comics NOT sold by comic wholesale distribution. It was sold by retail distributions at J.C. Penny, Woolworth (think Walmart today), and other drug store and retail stores. The distributions paved the way for independent comics like Eclipse, Pacific and other in the 1980s outside of the big distribution chain. For many years, this was held as the first Modern Age comics. It was called Captain Victory and the Galaxy Rangers

So if we cannot agree on the where the Bronze Age ends and where the Modern Age begins, how do we split the modern age into segments?

I have noticed that some of the Marvel Romance books are picking up some heat. These are late Silver and early Bronze Age books which people are starting to discover because they have art from some of the great artists from the era. For example, Steranko, Bushima, and Romita all did covers and interiors on these books and they are really hard to find in any condition.
Our Love Stories has seen an increase over the last 6 months and I think it will continue to go up. My Love books are not far behind either.

I have a handful of "My Love Stories". I will have to be on the lookout for increasing prices on these. In the past, the early romance stories (1950's and into early 1960's) commanded the values, while the dying genre in the early 1970's were less desirable. Interesting theory they may increase in value.

Hmm. No response to Blackest Night variant graded at 9.6 or to Amazing Spider-Man #102? Sheesh! Some folks are hard to please.
Oh well, sorry I have been offline for a while. There are other tasks in like, unpleasant as they may be.
Here's one from Hercules. No, that that Hercules. Nope,. not that one either - Charlton Hercules. I guess SOMEONE should have copyrighted the name. Hey, that horse has a horn on it's snout, and some mean looking teeth...

Here's my Weird Western Tales - A very conservative grade of 4.5 condition CPG Guide price of $30.
This is the first in the Weird Western Tales series even though it is #12. Continued from another series - I forget which one.

One more for Monday... I have come to like these Sugar & Spike comics from Sheldon Mayer. Believe me, Sugar is anything but sweet! Beguiled Spike goes along with almost anything...

Have a good week.

Actually, I bought this personally from the shop at the time the new issue went on sale - my weekly visit to the comic shop back in the day, so it seems like a printer mistake although I found it odd that a Marvel would get a DC cover. I suppose they were printed out of the same facilities... That's different. I'd go with what Ox says here. I cannot verify but seems likely. |

Deleted Railroad comics post - suffice it to say if you see a railroad comics (they have no cover- just a printed page as the cover) put out by the Railroad Association of America If you find one for a couple of bucks - buy it. If they want $10 or more - you should probably pass.
I used to know how to put up pictures here - going to the new forum is about as much fun as going from Windows XP to Windows 7. You get the idea. (place grumbling here...)

Crossovers Anyone?
kds_comics
|
There are plenty of examples of where comic book companies lend a character to another company or companies buy characters from each other.
In comics, there are cross-overs. JLA/ Avengers comes to mind It comes to mind because it was drawn by George Perez - who set out to pencil AND ink every character in the DC and Marvel Universe.
http://comicspriceguide.com/collection/marvel/jlaavengers/1/skqxcv

Plenty of others in comic book land. An obscure miniseries "The L.A.W." (Living Assault Weapons) done by Giordano and Layton for DC paid tribute to the Charlton comics incorporated into the DC Universe.
There are plenty of cross overs - because companies though it would make a buck. A few more come to mind... Superrman / Spide-rman Treasure edition; Batman / Spawn. Teenage Ninja Turtles and - alos every character you can name.
Here's one of my personal favorites I know you do not have. Weirdsville meets Shi! Okay, not technically a cross-over, more of a cameo. But what the hey...

Holy indeed. KDS |

Thank you for your input! Actually I do have the Weirdsville and do count it as an intercompany crossover. That was a good try! Shi was actually in 20 intercompany crossover books in the 1990s, not to mention MANY alternate covers, ashcans, etc. She was also in the first intercompany crossover that was reprinted in hardcover!
Either you have way too much free time or you get paid well for obscure research. (That's a compliment). Not much more I can say. I thought the Weirdsville one was sufficiently obscure. You win.

Here are a couple of 1970's goodies both in about 5.5 to 6.5 condition. Interior pages faded quick in the 1970s! Spider-Man battles Dracula! Dracula also later battled the X-Men, but that's another story.

Picked this up recently - first Iron Fist - (I think). Might go up in value if the TV Show/Movie are any good.

Just to show I do have a few old ones, here's a classic copied from the movie of the same name - Gypsy Colt. Simple story back in the day - comic ran on to the interior and exterior of the back cover! And interior of the front cover too. Cover shows wear but interior pages are solid! Better paper in the 1950's that in the 1970's. And them folks could draw them some horses!

Have a good day - comment accepted here... |

I would expect it to be under the 1988 series as a trade tab as well. You may have to request they add. Hard to keep up on all trades ever published.
