Don't have a story of buying a valuable book at 5 cents. But i can share that as kid, I bought comics for 25 cents off the 7-11 spinner rack back in 1974-1976 and I still have them today.
Hulk 181, GS X-Men 1, WBN 32, Marvel premiere 15, etc. All 0.5-3.0 as I was a kid and just read them. Wasn't until I was around 12 yrs old when I started to understand the value of the books.

Bought AMS 1 for $120 in 1980 from my local comic book store.
Had to mow a lot of lawns to afford it but I was so happy. Still have it today and had it CGCd 10 yrs ago - 3.5.

What's super-cool is showing my daughter my collection and letting her read those beaters, handling the gems and geeking out with dad.

It all depends on what books make up your collection. I've seen a $3k drop in the last week on many of my Marvel SA keys such as AMS, Avengers, FF, etc. Overall, in the last few months, I would say my SA collections value has dropped by 20%. However, my GA collection has continued to rise in value by 15% in the same time period.

I completely agree with rixmaxx in his assessment - spot on.

I was at a local comic show a few weeks ago here in NJ and all the collectors/dealers agreed that post-Covid/free govt money handouts has had a significant impact on collection values and sales. Don't believe we will see covid level valuations for some time, if at all. We will see a spike as speculators begin dumping those books they over-paid for. That's my signal to buy, which I plan to do. These things seem to occur in cycles, just like the stock market. What goes up must come down. Simple supply and demand cycle.

As they say on Wall Street, buy low, sell high!

Scarcity is fun to collect but difficult and pricey at most grades.

Not at bottom yet - more correction to go for sure.

GA in general is really heating up - EC Horror, Timely, DC, St Johns, Fiction House, Fox, Lev Gleason, Avon, etc.
Baker romance (St Johns) very hot.

Same here. I love GA Batman & Det. I know they command top dollar at auction and shows.

Ruk,
Unfortunately, Capt Marvel not as popular as one would think and sales seem to confirm that.
However, I love my Capt Marvel Adv #3 - awesome cover:

What I see now is a classic buying opportunity. Just about every SA/BA title has retreated to pre-covid levels.
Naturally, one would think more buying should begin to occur soon which would increase valuations across the board. Time will tell.

Could not agree with you more. You really need to average out the sales to come up with the most accurate value. If a you have a low sale because someone negotiated "a killer" price or another collector needed to fill that one void to complete his run and paid over asking and over guide, take the average of the two, etc and that's your value.

There exist some financial equations that can be used that factor in:
1. Qty of sales per 12 month period
2. Price paid for each transaction within 12M period
3. Segregate by grade

A simple excel spreadsheet or other software could be used to perform the calculations which would be very straightforward.

What's dropping in value are SA, BA, MA books as they ran up during covid by 100-300%. Now they have basically dropped back to their pre-covid values.

What I have seen at auctions, etc are that GA (Timely, DC, Horror, Romance - Matt Baker, etc) & pulps are now the hot asset. For example, I bought Marvel Mystery #14 & #15 both CGC 4.0 10yrs ago for $400 each. Today, both are selling for approx $3,000 at auction. GA are going through the roof even in very low grade - depending on title of course. Horror & Romance are also going through the roof. Specifically good girl art and skull covers.

Waiting for 1969 Vampirella to start moving.

Conversely, my SA keys have all dropped significantly. I expect over the next several years, speculators, collectors, etc will start buying up the SA keys again as they continue to be quite desirable and cheaper.

Agreed - for stories I like ASM 1-170s. For memories, it's most BA Marvel books from 1974-1985. That's when I read everything but also remember buying GS X-Men 1, Hulk 181, ASM 129-152, X-Men 94 off the 7-11 spinner racks and Marvel Super-Hero Slurpee cups and Topps Marvel Super-Hero stickers when I was a kid. For art, way too many to name but I'm now into GA Matt Baker, Frank Frazetta, Wally Wood and others. For rarity, it's certain Gerber GA books that I'm trying to acquire.
