Blog Post about Your Collection Goals

Since 1992, when I started collecting comics, my primary goal has been to complete Batman Vol 1. I have a graded page from #1, and I still need 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13. Every one of these issues is very expensive even in lower grade and they sell very quickly when they hit the market.
My second goal is to get all the Detective Comics but that has got to be the hardest title to complete in all comicdom. I have from 226-881 complete and I have another 50 issues below that.
It would be funny if we were bidding on the same books.

Dear Basement (*EEIG) think of it as a contribution to the world economic order the World convention on international trade depends on us all doing our part to generate commerce. Go buy a comic book -the more expensive the better-------------- go get your comics graded- buy plastic book holders- pencils- pens- the world awaits your response- Bankers around the world will applaud you. You will have done your job for stabilizing the international world economy
Hey Ruk, I'm doing my part. I would love to get more graded but I am not comfortable sending books through the mail. I would prefer to deal with CGC/CBCS at a convention but those aren't happening right now. I did talk to a comic book shop and the guy told me I could send stuff through him. When I asked if the books were returned insured based on the submitted value or the new value as we all know graded books are worth more, he told me there was no difference. I turned and looked at the rack with his graded books and wondered to myself "If books that are graded are worth the same as ungraded, why are these $10 books being sold for $90"? I won't use them for sure. I just have to find a LCS I trust. |

Hi,
I know that on some Facebook selling pages, both buyers and sellers can request referrals (to help determine if everyone is on the up and up). Has CPG ever looked into that? Could it be done?
Just curious.

Hi Ron, feedback is based on post sale. I was thinking more pre sale. The feedback system may accomplish this already but wasn't sure. |

Sorry, I had it confused with "recent value changes". You are correct as I do see Gains/Drops for all grades. Apologies for the confusion. |

Storing graded comics
BasementComics
|
Currently I am using BCW's plastic and cardboard boxes for storing but have been considering using fireproof bags or a safe to store them in.
Has anyone run into any issues with books being stored in a fireproof bag/safe or storing them horizontally instead of vertically?
Thanks

there's a 2006 post from the ex-head of CGC about this on their forums. SOME safes are not safe to store slabs in as they can cause rusty staples. The gist: "....because of the chemical compound used to make his safe fireproof or fire resistant... We have strong reason to believe that ANY fireproof or fire resistant safe might create a harmful storage environment for your comics. Yesterday, we also learned that fireproof/fire resistant safes are prone to develop moisture. Many fire resistant safes contain insulation, which in turn, contains water crystals; thus the high content of moisture."
https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/topic/61106-important-information-about-storing-comic-books-in-fire-proofresistant-safes/ and another thread: https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/topic/444413-cgc-slabs-storing-in-a-safe/
I didn't search it, but pretty sure there's a few discussions there about storing them horizontally vs vertically, and flat vs standing, so you can find those yourself. I store mine standing up, like normal comics, so I take less of a chance of having a spine 'bow' a little over time if it's on the 'down' side (even tho the inner bag should stop most of that, they're not real tight so as not to cause the comics to get waves/warps), or having gravity shift them to one side or the other and POSSIBLY mushing the page edge against the side of the inner well/bag, especially if that edge has overrun of the cover. so now you have more readin' material to pass the pandemic time.. edited by collectibleshop on 6/28/2020
Thank you for this. A very interesting read.

Hi Ruk, time for an update from me.
I finally got my comics after a 2 month long wait plus filled in three holes in my Detective collection (68, 80 and 85 - all graded). That leaves 26 issues needed between #27 and 76.

Hi, try changing the country code to all. I put in issue one and I think that bottom yellow issue popped up. At least I think that's it. I also searched by the words league and gentlemen.

I think it also depends on the significance and era of the book. Even a Poor condition Golden age Batman will fetch a pretty penny. |

Hi Ben, I was just stating that the VVSS ( at least mine was) had an embossment and was signed. I was under the impression that all VVSS (including the Turok) had the embossment and were signed. Apologies if that is not the case.
I did look at an ebay auction for a CGC VVSS Turok and they state (per CGC) that the embossment is on the back cover for that particular issue. |
