I grabbed a few things to scan from my collection that I've had for years.
gregbrookins wrote:

I have a hard time going over 20 a book most times. The one exception, I spent about 100 bucks on FF 48, but I had to there.

When I decided to collect Batman books from issues 150 to 260 I was bidding between $15 to $25 originally. A year went by and my bids went up to $20 to $35 to win the auctions for common issues. The 1st silver age appearances or let's say a Neal Adams book he worked on was above or way above the $25 mark.
I completed the little run of issues 150 to 260 a little longer than a year ago. Now if I tripped to do that now, $30 a book would be cheap for most in the grade I wanted. Batman books values went crazy. Now trying to buy issues 261 to 300 even those had a high spike now. So might just pick up one here or there but if not it won't bother to much.
As for Fantastic Four 48, I bought a CGC 8.0 for $505 years ago, before the second FF movie and it was the most I ever spent on one book, and still is. After winning it I thought I was crazy. Manic buying at the wrong time I thought. Looking now what a 8.0 sells for I think I won't lose money if I sold it. A year ago a seller had a raw copy in vf. Two other bidders bidding on it besides me, I got it for $230 thinking I was getting a good deal. When I got it in the mail, I was happy to see it was a vf book. I think I could get more than I paid if I sold it, which I won't.
Wow CapnDoug, that is a lot of long boxes. Kari must be a saint!

I only recently went over $50 for a single issue (we won't mention bulk collections...) and still get the whole "Is it really worth it" feeling if I pay cash.

And space? Ask Kairi about the amount of space my collection takes up. At this point I have 44 long boxes.... My current shelves only hold 24. So I have boxes stacked up all over the suite.... I'm really not looking forward to unstacking those boxes to add more stuff to the boxes at the bottom.... So many issues that aren't even worth selling....

Back to comics. I recently found a source for Amazing Spider-man upper grade Canadian newsstand versions. These began with 233 and ended at 279. I already owned a bunch of these and decided to fill in my run. After picking these ones up, I only need 3 issues to fill the run (or 11 more Canadian versions to have a full set of those)

Aaron
edited by aarondawe on 4/21/2016

Thought I'd post some of my signed stuff (although most is not comics).
First up is my copy of Elektra Lives Again signed by Frank Miller while I was chaperoning him at the Anime North convention in 2003. That was fun filled 3 days, spent making sure he was 'wined and dined' and talking about creators, the industry and 9/11. I wish I had gotten a sketch from him, but I did get to watch him draw several.

My Holy Grail DVD signed by Terry Gilliam.
Just had this arrival of early Dr. Doom appearances.

The Hulk one completes the pair. With this Super Villain Team-up, I now have the full run. Looking forward to reading the Hero For Hire issues -- they have a massive reputation for being completely ridiculous (and maybe perhaps are the prime reason John Byrne created the 'doombots were used for all bad stories featuring Doom' explanation). Funny that Doom usually appears over two issues in those days...

Aaron
edited by aarondawe on 2/16/2016

I am also considering trying to complete a run of Menace. I realize that even at 11 issues only, this may take me years if I wish to pursue it as, as some of the issues rarely come up for sale, and when they do I often don't have money at hand to snag one. This series was the first time that Stan Lee decided to write the stories he wanted (knowing that the comics code was coming, I believe). The stories in this series are better written and plotted than many of the other similar titles from around that time. Anyway, these are the first pair that I have.

Aaron
edited by aarondawe on 2/14/2016

For much of the '90s, I was mostly interested in manga, as the titles from the big 2 were becoming more and more 'image-d', and I didn't care for that trend at all. As I only stopped buying new books around the turn of the century, these posts may give the impression that I never bought anything recent.

Here's my copy of Vengeance of Bane (which I sold off a few years ago for about 20x what I paid for it). I was briefly considering getting one of those recreation covers put on it at one time, but it didn't feel right (and would have felt disrespectful to the previous owner). And they told me they couldn't guarantee to keep the original staples.

The cover-ed one is the Golden Records reprint. The picture is using the art of placement to hide the obvious deficiencies of the books (#7 has a big piece out of the bottom right corner, for example).

I picked up 9 and 10 from Doug Sulipa, and 6 from mycomicshop and 7 at a local show. The rest were from eBay.

Aaron

Decided to start a back issue thread here at the new forum (maybe it will kickstart some more activity; or maybe not).
I went under the ID of 'thatjerk', which of course was not my price guide login, so the name's changed.

In the old forum I had a thread dedicated to my Marvel 70's monster and horror reprint runs that I was starting to add other stuff to just before the crash. I may post some of that stuff again too.
After completing the reprint books and my run of Fantastic Four 1-300, I've been kind of going for other things to satisfy the collecting bug.
One thing I picked up in the past year were these issues of Uncanny X-men. I already had 3 of the Neal Adams issues as part of work I did grading someone's collection for them, and realized that while I don't care about the 'old' X-men, I love the Adams issues and decided to complete those:

edited by aarondawe on 10/7/2017
