Is anyone else think that Marvel comics has lost it?
Relaunch after relaunch. A glutton of #1's just to get sales. Is there any consideration for the collector out there?
$4.99 cover prices?? If DC can do $2.99 cover prices, why is Marvel so greedy? It's not the quality..
The quality... is terrible. Poor writers (that Marvel trumpets as the best) and artwork that is worse than my 5 year old niece.
No new ideas..retreading past events... Secret Wars. Civil war 2. What the hell?
GARBAGE!!! Why do people keep buying??

I heard that!
I've had to put things back or into my pull-box for later more than once.
It's way to easy to walk into the lcs and be holding hundreds of $ in merch in your hands in mere seconds.
I miss the idea of a variant being a price difference or newstand/direct (which some folks still don't consider a variant. I did go into length on the subject in the old threads because in order to make the cover have a picture in the upc box the printing plates still needed to be changed so it is by my opinion a variation of the original but I digress.....) I also like full complete runs and have 50+ variants of one issue is simply ludicrous to me.

I enjoyed quite a few of the dc reboot stories.
I also agree that the characters who were reserved for filler stories (in the past) are seeing their due focus. I like the Inhumans, it seems there's a lot of potential for great stories with them.
As far as jumping in mid story, my solution has been to seek out TPB's to get caught up or to at least read the few issues that I missed leading up to my jumping in point. (which is easier with modern issues and not so much with older stuff )
That being said it's not that marvel hasn't reprinted the older stories but what few collected editions are offered don't seem to contain all of the material (case in point the essential marvel books jumped around a bit ) Not including single issue stories in favor of 20 book story arcs is a put off because I'd like to read them as they happened.
All in all I still like the experience of trying to piece together runs,
I think from a cost perspective it's prohibitive depending on your range of interests. (It's easier to focus on all issues of one character/story than all issues of all stories)
My main issue with marvel is simply that I sometimes don't even know where to begin when it comes to buying new books in long running titles. I buy issues of ASM and realize I'm already missing two or three books prior (story-wise) so even though I like the covers it actually serves me no purpose as far as reading the story.
I may just be nit-picking here but I'll still seek out my favorite characters just in TPB form.

I've been P.o.'d at them for years I can understand a reboot every10 or 20 years for certain stale titles but, not EVERY SINGLE FREAKING ONE!
And the variant craze is zanier than EVER 30+ different covers for Spider-Man really?
What's worse is the farther the cover price goes away from the old double digit prices the higher the secondary market prices go for golden and silver books and I'm even seeing ridiculous spikes in bronze age dollar bin fodder.
All that being said I do hold dear my favorite characters from my childhood days and I think Marvel knows it, they know the die hard fans want every #1 and every variant and they'll put deadpool on a Heathcliff Reboot just to prove it.
Wait!, did he say Star comics Heathcliff #1 Deadpool variant?
-Yes he did.
When does it come out??????

I haven't brought any Marvel stuff for ages, Although i did get a variant there awhile ago but that was it. Just lost all interest in everything Lol. Couldn't track the stories no-more (care factor was way to low) & the prices, well... The extra prints, Why! Yep i know they are a company needing cash as we all do. But when i see 3rd print not selling out in a LCS & they announce a 4th print ???
Having way more fun with IDW, Image, Dark-Horse, DC & some independents.

I am so used to everyone always talking about MARVEL and DC, but i have always been a fan of all those random publishing companies, like crossgen, IDW, IMAGE, DarkHorse, and even Valiant is worth delving into once and awhile, but i'm marvel'd out when it comes to my comics. i love Broadsword comics, more the older stuff, and i miss Chaos! so very much, but after Hughes passed, the art isn't the same. most of the art is all the same now, either barely a lick of detail and so very plain and simple, or there is just waaaaaaayyyy too much going on that it is hard to follow the page alone i miss the old days of comic and how they were made....anyone else?

@ lealew7 +1 for sure. I had almost every chaos book there and gave up on the idea of a complete set. When we needed to move I sold everything but a few evil ernies, and a few lady deaths now i just don't like looking at them because they bring back bad memories.

Holy cow I totally forgot about the variant nonsense.
I wouldn't mind indies, but I was put off way back when Image went months between putting out the next book.
How does Marvel need money? Their movie business ( and tv too) is off the charts.
But how do they think they can pass off this terrible artwork and writing as good? And why do people continue to buy it is what frustrates me. Some people are telling them it's ok. No sales= no success.

That's why I have trouble letting go of some of my older books they just feel like something special when you hold them in your hands. The covers were great the books weren't 40% ads and the stories were good. Even in some of the less popular titles and "B" and "C" characters had great writers. When Marvel copied a DC characters or vise versa they sometimes outshined the original because of the art and stories.

Don't get me wrong. There's a whole bunch of those variant covers that are way cool! But being a completist, I'm afraid that once I start I'll be way in over my head and way out of money.
