How does water damage affect grading. I know grading guides mention mildew that places a comic into the Poor grade. But I have some books that have no mildew. The only problem is water damage. Some of the books have significant damage, and I'd think they would then fit in the Poor grade. But I have others that have a small spot of damage, like in the very bottom right corner. Anyone know how to consider it in grading or know where I can find it mentioned in a grading guide?

Water damage is always serious but like anything else, it depends on exactly what was damaged. Corners got wet and curled but majority of book was dry? Less severe than mildew/full color running/badly damaged pages.

Grading isn't a simple scale where you subtract X points for water damage, X points for missing page, etc. Each book is viewed as a complete piece and all of the aspects of the book are considered in total to arrive to a grade.

That's why professional grading is time consuming and the people who do it have done it for years. Takes a skillful eye to be a good grader.

I've been grading for 25 years. Got my start grading for a local used bookstore. So, yeah, I know about the subjective nature of it.
I've just never run across any guides or talked with anyone about water damage. There are different types of damage from moisture. From small stains to warped pages. I thought this would be a good forum for discussion. I wanted to know what the community thinks. And, hopefully, someone may know how a professional grading company handles it.

Water damage is definitely a severe detractor. Many collectors won't buy a book thats been damaged by water. Again, the severity of the water damage dictates the grade it will receive. If the water damage is severe enough it could warrant a 1.0 grade. If it's moderate or slight enough it could still reach an 8.0 maybe higher. I've seen CGC labels that state the book suffers from water damage.
