Title: Star Wars Volume 1, 1st Printing
Missing Issues: 7-10 "PIZZAZZ variants" containing PIZZAZZ multi-page insert
Country: USA
Publisher: Marvel
Publication Years: 1978
Cover Price: $0.35

Rare examples of Star Wars (1st printing, newsstand edition) issues #7, #8, #9, and #10 (Jan-Apr 1978) contained a separate, multi-page insert with a mail-in subscription offer for Marvel's PIZZAZZ magazine. As these inserts appeared in only a tiny fraction of the print run and were sold only in select markets, they are rare and more valuable than their standard counterparts.

The standard issues (without the insert) included a PIZZAZZ subscription offer that was printed on one of the pages of the comic. As a result, I've seen a number of uninformed (or unethical) sellers list standard issues for sale as "Rare PIZZAZZ Variants." This can make it difficult to track the asking/selling prices of actual PIZZAZZ variants.

Anyway, the variants are missing here. I submitted a Missing Variant Report for issue #9 with cover photo (I have one of these in my possession and can provide high-res photos), but PIZZAZZ variants should be added for all four issues, as the cover of the PIZZAZZ variant is no different from that of the standard newsstand issue.

Here are images of issue #9 with the PIZZAZZ insert:

Those would be in the same vein as "Mark Jewelers" variants.

Was it only Star Wars that had them? Or were there other books in early '78 that had them too?

I've actually seen them in:
  • Star Wars
  • Captain America

But I've also seen references to them appearing in:
  • The Amazing Spider-Man
  • Thor
  • Incredible Hulk
  • Marvel Team-Up
  • Invaders
I only submitted a missing variant report for Star Wars #9 because reports require a cover photo and this is the only PIZZAZZ variant in my possession.

By the way, here's an image of the non-insert PIZZAZZ ad found in the standard versions of these books. From my experience, most for-sale listings labeled "PIZZAZZ Variant" are actually standard versions that sellers have misidentified as variants based on the existence of the standard, non-insert ad.

I've got 8 titles with issues in 78. I'm gonna check them tonight smile I'll let you know if I find any with the insert.
