Discuss comic grading and how to evaluate books

I'm relatively new to comic book collecting. I've been trying my best to find out why many older comics have what appears to be a colored marker line on the top or bottom of the book. I was under the impression these were simply remainder marks, but I can't find any concrete information. Can someone educate me on this? Thanks so much.

It's called 'distributor overspray', I believe it was used to determine which area the books were sent to for newsstand returns.

google is your friend, plus this has been discussed on the forums several times. called various names tho, so you kinda have to know what to ask google. but 'distributor ink/spray/stripes/overspray' are the most common terms.
some definitions:
DISTRIBUTOR STRIPES
- Color brushed or sprayed on the edges of comic book stacks by the distributor/wholesaler to code them for expedient exchange at the sales racks. Typical colors are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Distributor stripes are not a defect.
Distributor Painted Stripes (Distro Ink). Color ink painted or sprayed onto the edges of comic book stacks as a special coding used by distributors.
