kds_comics wrote:

There simply are no raw books at 9.8 or above.

This isn't true. All graded books were raw books before being encapsulated, so if a book can be graded at 9.8 or higher, then those grades do exist for raw. You'll just have a harder time convincing people that they actually are those grades.

Aaron

The logout bug strikes again. That last post was me!

Ron,
I know there has been some debate in the past as to what a typical right-off-the-shelf new book should be graded at just because the book has now been handled by multiple people. Even though 9.4 seems a reasonable grade for the majority of new books I pick up at my LCS, has there been any thought to lowering the default grade assigned to books added to one's collection down to a 9.2 or 9.0.

Biddle,
For me personally, the grade and resulting value are of secondary importance. For books in my collection that I've personally bought brand new off the shelf I'll just leave it at the default. That is unless it has an obvious defect (corner blunting, creasing, the very rare cut, etc.) when I buy it. Sometimes you just can't find a really good copy on the rack, or I wasn't paying attention. When the time comes that I plan on selling one then I'll look at assigning it a "proper" grade if warranted. In the rare occasions that I buy older books I will assign a grade when I add them to my collection because they have obvious defects or I just don't know how often they've been handled.

Cheers!
Jim

The feature you're talking about, the graph with all paying members books by grade is new. We are hoping that members will start to change those grades to accurately reflect their collection. It takes time to accurately grade your books and so many of us are just trying to get them in the system. Personally, I think it's MOSTLY about time and not dishonesty but some people dream crazy dreams.
R

Just been adding some of my collection and cant help but think that a large portion of the membership are somewhat deluded about the grades of their comics, to have 90-95% of the issues in 9.2 is wishful thinking in my honest opinion!!! Ah well, only deluding yourselves guys.......
