The story is that J.G. Jones took art he'd drawn for this story to a convention. Jim Shooter looked at the art and hired him for DEFIANT Comics where his first comic art saw print. When DEFIANT shut down, Rant was published with J.G. Jones art in 2 issues by Boneyard Press.

I have a couple of those. Such a trippy read. (Spoiler: Hansi learns Jesus > Nazis)
High grade Spire should be easier to find than they are. When comics have odd distribution, piles get filed or misfiled... Where are the missing (hoarded?) Spires?

"The Hiding Place" is a Spire Nazi POW camp comic. It fits the theme.

Wow! That sure is a Will Eisner cover. They only had enough budget for one color on the cover? Kinda adds to the cool factor.

I'd think any comic collector who's also used a M16 in a video game would need a copy of that.

I've never seen any original art surface. I felt ripped off by the low grade on this. It's one reason I have no interest in resubmitting to them.

I would love to have a full set of their stuff with price variants.

I'm shocked that these aren't seen more often. He did others, but I'm not sure of the extent.

My copies. None are very high grade. It's just a comic that I buy whenever I see it in a back issue bin.

Copy 1

Copy 2

A lot of the stuff I scan and post online were bought in the 90's or newer. This is actually from my original collection of stuff bought new that rarely gets touched. This was bought new in 1977 and it is from my original childhood collection.

Marvel Spotlight #5

I don't hate the movies. I think someone walking around with a flaming skull for a head is cool and it doesn't need a plot or dialogue.

Thanks Gilgandra!

Sifting through my photobucket uploads of scans from my collection. Not sure where I got this, but it sure looks like Superman vs. Popeye.

I don't collect Swamp Thing, so this is one of those things I'll find in my collection and think "I didn't know I owned that?!"

After originally making a typo above, I wondered how disgusting it would be to have a "Swamp Thong" comic.

Argh, Popeye indeed! Fun collecting a certain book when you find yet another copy like you're Captain America 117. I do that with nick fury, agent of shield 1.

I'm pretty sure I have several Strange Tales #135's with the first SHIELD.

Strange Tales #135 (Copy 1)

Strange Tales #135 (Copy 2)

These are the only 2 I've scanned.

In all honesty, I've never tracked the value of this comic. I was more of a Marvel fan. I was buying long boxes of comics in the 90's when the industry imploded and stores started closing. I was also buying "reader copy" collections during the same time period, but most weren't that great. This was never something I intentionally sought out. It was just something that ended up in a bulk collection that I bought very cheaply. I do have an appreciation of Wrightson's art, so this was something I set aside when I discovered I owned it. I then forgot about it until I scanned the cover a few years back. I forgot about it again until I saw the scan in my photobucket account. I do think it's neat.

I've been collecting so long that when I see Hulk #181, my mind remembers plopping down 25ยข for it at a convenience store. When I see what some of this stuff goes for now, I'm actually horrified because I would never pay that much.
When I pay $100 for some non-key pre-hero Tales to Astonish issue, newer collectors are horrified. It works both ways.

Pick up what you can afford when you can afford it, and eventually other people will be looking at your collection with envy. I had to be creative or stretch my budget to get the silver age Marvel keys I own, but those are the comics I appreciate the most today.

I don't consider mine high grade. There are several reasons I end up with multiples.

1) I think it's a key book that's undervalued. If I can flip it for a profit, I can use that as leverage to get something more valuable that I really want even more.
2) I think it's good trade fodder for something I want even more. I traded a stack of duplicate comics from the 70's and 80's for my first Strange tales #110. I was almost flat broke at the time. I had one year where I was essentially unemployed and made less than $10,000 the whole year!
3) I'm trying to upgrade my copy. I think everyone wants the best copy that they can (or will willingly) afford. In 1982, I paid $125 for a copy of X-Men #1 through the mail. It was all I could afford. I was VERY displeased with the condition upon arrival... but it was all that I could afford and it was the only retailer that had one advertised for sale. Later in the year, I'd saved some money and my local comic shop picked up a similar condition copy and had it priced $100. I bought it with the hope to upgrade. I was hoping a retailer might be willing to do a 2 for 1 trade if they had a higher grade copy. A few months went by and I couldn't afford to date and collect comics. I dropped comics for a decade and put them in storage. By the time I got them out of storage I liked having 2 copies. It had really increased in value.

I was buying the 1st Shield in an attempt to upgrade my copy. I felt it was undervalued. Who knew they'd make a TV show about SHIELD and feature them in a string of Marvel movies? I felt it was undervalued, but maybe Marvel Studios helped me out a little unintentionally.
