In the Negative Zone, a Tyannan ship crash-landed on the volcanic planet Arthros after being hit by a meteor. The crew released life spores before dying. Many years later, one of these spores evolved into an insectoid creature with high intelligence. Discovering the wreckage, the creature absorbed advanced Tyannan technology, gaining a Cosmic Control Rod and body enhancements. Named Annihilus, he sought to conquer or destroy nearby planets. His fear of death drove him to protect the rod, even clashing with the Fantastic Four.
