I have a copy of "the adventures of mr obadiah oldbuck" , does anyone know what the value of it is ...roughly? It has all its pages , but a few are foxed and have tears on the margins.

Thanks Steve

Depends on which edition you have. The first edition was published in Switzerland and was in the French language. It was translated and printed again in England and there was a later US edition, which was a reprint of the British, translated version.

I would certainly have been very pleased to find a copy.

Regards Earl.

I, too, have a copy of "The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck" (Wilson and Company, September 14, 1842). Above the title: "Brother Jonathan" followed by "Extra, No. IX." I inherited it from my mother, who said it might be rare and very valuable.

I'm not a collector or expert; but, using Overstreet's Grading Standards, I truly believe it is in Good (GD) Condition.

Does anyone have an idea of its approximate worth and where I might get the best price? I would like to sell it.

What are the odds that TWO people will post that they have the same 1842 comic book on the same day?

S'ok Pegasus, I was thinking that it was new but I remembered that someone had asked before. I only checked to make sure Earl had gotten it and then I saw Slym's post and was all ready to welcome him back. oh well.

One note of interest is that in my estimation, this book's status as "the first comic book", will change. EARLIER books are known, using the SAME format as Obadiah. FOR NOW, Overstreet and his main advisors on Victorian/pre-Victorian "comics" have dubbed this book, #1. As more research is done, and definitions of what's considered a "comic book" or "comic book pre-cursor", I'm sure that EARLIER books with the same format will take turns, as time and research progresses as being "#1". Watch what you $$$$pend on one of these rare but oddball items for now. "Comic books" from this and PRIOR eras are still in the process of being codified and their status of importance is subject to CHANGE and revision.

Wait, wait, ...What about those early caveman wall paintings of animals, fire and such????

Those have to be considered 'comic' drawings too!

I think your publication needs to have speech balloons and at least four printed pages to qualify as a comic... so you'd have to find four continuous caves and a very old printing machine!

I found discussion group on Yahoo about Victorian age comics which was set up by the people who wrote the Overstreet articles but I have found it hard to register.

One copy (brown cover version) sold on eBay a little more than a year ago for $3,500. A French copy sold around the same time for another 4 figure amount that I can't remember. I thought that the portrait layout of the French version was much more attractive - it had two pages from the US edition on each page.

Thanks for posting that. With so few sales of these, it's been hard trying to get any value data together.

Right now someone on eBay is trying to sell their copy at $25,000:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=14428&item=2251744012&rd=1

(Of course, it is signed. I still doubt they will sell it at that price).

There were two running on e-bay this week. One on e-bay US and one on e-bay UK. The one on e-bay UK finished yesterday at £103 (About $190).

Hi, Earl. I couldn't find the books on e-bay; however, as you noted previously, there was more than one edition. Overstreet lists these two early issues: Tilt & Bogue, London, 1840-1841; and Wilson and Company, Sept. 14 1842, New York ("Brother Jonathan Extra No. IX"). The latter is still considered the first comic book ever printed in America. See Overstreet's, p. 326, for additional information.

I recently managed to get the 1884 Edition of Stuff and Nonsence which is listed in this years Oversteet Victorian Section. It is debatable to my mind that this is really a Graphic Novel in the modern sense but it's still a nice thing to have. (Cost me $100 for a VGD copy).
