I just picked up two comics called "The Uncensored Mouse", published by Eternity Comics in 1989. CPG has the first two comics in their database. Can anyone confirm that these are the only two comics published under this title?
The series was realy cool, as it reprinted Mickey Mouse strips from the early 1930s by Floyd Gottfredson. The content is relatively racy for the times and has been subsequently hidden from public review by Disney for 60+ years. I'd love to know if Eternity published any more of these remarkable strips. They indicated in the editor's notes that they would be publishing the entire run of Gottfredson's strips.
And if the planned comic books were never published, does anyone know why they were not? |

Two was all. Disney took them to court or threatened to and that put a stop to anymore issues. Been years since I read these. At the time they were a 'hot' back issue.
"Why, a four-year-old child can understand this report. Run out and find me a four-year-old child." "I have no fear of the gallows." "No?" "No. Why should I? They're gonna shoot me."

Yep, just the two.
Eternity figured those stories are public domain. By not mentioning or showing Mickey Mouse on the cover, they'd avoid Trademark infringement.
True or not, Disney has an awesome legal staff with a huge budget, they could easily spend more than Eternity's net worth in a lawsuit. Disney could also threaten to sue the distributors (wasn't there about 5 of them in '89?)...
I think it's pretty messed up that Copyright/Trademark laws are used to hide history. ("Important" or "Worthy" history? I don't know, doesn't matter, hard to know if something is worth reading before you read it.) Sure, creators should be allowed to profit from their labors, but this is something different. (And the little voice in my head says Floyd Gottfredson "created" those stories, The Law (co-written by Disney lawyers over the last 50+ years) disagrees with me.)
