Hi there! I was confused by some of the labels given to comics by the price guide. What's the difference between Issue #1 and Issue #1 A, other than several thousand dollars? Why the dramatic difference in price? Are the "A" ones still collectible, if one was trying to accumulate every X-Men comic ever?
Also (this is kind of unrelated), as a gift, would you rather receive a single rare comic or a bunch of not-so-rare comics? |

| the diference is this. the #1 is the first and 1 A is a alternative cover, so what make the diference is this: #1 letīs say 3000 copies and 1 a 300. see theres less printing of the 1 A , and it value the comic. i think is this, but if anyone had more certain about this, feel free to correct my opinion. |

Like Balduriano said, the 1A, 1B, etc are variants of the #1. You'll find these variants for many different reasons. For example, if an issue goes bak to press (a 2nd printing), then you will have issue 2, let's say, which is the first printing, and 2A which will be the second printing. You may simply have variant covers, such as is commonly done these days. An issue #10 has the "regular" cover, issue 10A is a sketch edition of the same book, issue 10B is a wraparound cover, etc. These variants only have different covers, everything inside is the same. Another way A's and B's, etc get into a title is due to reprints. Reprints are when a book are printed again for some reason, but after some length of time. A good example of this are when a classic issue is reprinted to be packaged with a figurine. Sometimes the variants will be something like a different price box (Marvel used to print some diamond shape, and some squared shaped price boxes.) Price variants, like 12p instead of 35 cents in the price box are also variants. As far as addressing whether they are necessary to complete a run, that is up to the individual. Some people are completists, meaning that they want every single version of a comic that exists. Others just want every single story, which means they only need one of each issue, regardless of how many covers there are. Hopefully that helps answer your question, Alana. If not, post back what you still want to know.
(The unrelated question: If you knew exactly which rare comics I was looking for, I'd want the rare one. If you had no idea what I collected, I'd rather get cash ) Oh, and welcome to the forums!

If you're looking at Uncanny X-men, there isn't a #1A, but there is a -#1A. If this is what you are referring to, there are completely different comics.
If not, the replies above are correct -- these are sometimes variants for the same issue with different covers.
In some cases though, the 'A' and 'B' etc. designations are for reprints. If you look up Action Comics number one you will see that the original is many thousands of dollars, but the other versions are around $5. These are reprints printed years later, so have less value than the hard sought original.

welcome to the x-dream... I think that your question has pretty much been answered. I love uncanny on a side note though!!!!! I love all X titles. Are you currently collecting older issues? Are you reading some of the newer comics like Uncanny X-Men, Ultimate X-Men, X-men, New X-Men, X-Factor, etc. ??? ~Heather AKA InvisibleWoman~

To jump in on this convo, I think I might jump in Ult. X-Men. Found out about Ult. Cable, and it piqued my interest.

Balduriano: Thank you!!!!!
Argus: I hate giving cash because it's so impersonal! That's why I was looking into comic books. The gift recipient is trying to collect all the X-Men comics, so I thought I'd go that way. I know he's working on Uncanny X-Men right now, so I was hoping I could find an old one from the 60s, since his oldest issue dates back to the early seventies. Sound good?
Aarondawe: You're right, one of the number ones is actually label # - 1A. What does that mean, anyone?
InvisibleWoman: The only comic book I've ever read is Batgirl, Year One (I have a thing for Barbara Gordon - we redheads stick together!) because I played Batgirl in a school one-act play a little while ago. Comics are something I'm interested in looking into, though. |

During the mid 90's (1997?) Marvel had a comic event called "Flashback", during which their montly titles all got a -1 issue. The -1 issue told a story set in the past, taking place before issue 1.
Avengers/Fantastic Four/Iron Man did not get -1 issues as they were taking part in the "Heroes Reborn" relaunch.
Even more confusing is that some comics have a "-1" issue, a "1/2" issue or a "0" issue taking place before (but printed after) issue 1.

I was going to go to the library today to check out a comic book, but I got out of a volleyball game late :(. I'm a little disappointed. Any suggestions? I'd like to start at the beginning of something, so it needs to be sort of easy to locate as well.
Scarlett, thanks! That makes very little sense, but I understand it. |

Marvel books to jump on with.
For a new reader... I don't really have a book for you. I would say start picking up books like around Janurary.
New Thor, Mighty Avengers will be starting up.
For right now. Get Anita Blake...lol
Seriously, I don't have something new to recommend. Everything is at least number 5-6 right now.

If you're looking for early run X-men, you'll probably have a large number to chose from on e-bay. You can pick up some lower grades for very little money. If he only wants high grade ones, you might have a problem getting them on the cheap.
If you look through Uncanny X-men in the price guide here, you can look at the different covers and read descriptions saying who was in that issue sort of info. You might see one in particular you'd like to get him. Check any LCS's in your area, they may have it in your price range. If you see a "sale" button next to the view icon in the price guide, someone here is selling one. You can PM them with any questions.
Good luck.

LCS = Local Comic Shop
Anita Blake = New comic from Marvel Comics, based on a "best selling" book. Its to do with vampires. The 1st issue of the comic has sold out.

Fuj is correct, my mistake. Anita Blake is sold out at Diamond (a comic distriubtor which Marvel uses). However, the 1st issue is currently proving to be slightly hard to purchase at cover price.

| Okay, I went to the library and got three volumes of something called New X-Men Academy X. So there's that. (I also got a bunch of Batmans because my best friend loves Batman - Contagion, War Games, Nightwing Year One.) |
