One of the local stores here had a 50% off sale going on so I raided their dollar bin for about 40 books or so. Problem being that they decided for some reason to tag these books with a $1 sticker.
I have gotten a few of them off with my nails and picking but I keep feeling like there has got to be a better way. Anyone have any advice? I was thinking an exacto knife or something but that might be too harsh. A moist cloth sounds scary of course too.

A chemical called Naptha is often used to get tape and also stickers off of books. You can buy it at hardware stores. Test it out on junk books first.

A few drops Lighter fluid usually works. (Found in the grocery store, near the pipe cleaners and other pipe smoking supplies.) Try it on some of the lamest ones 1st.
The page will need to dry for a couple minutes before it goes back to its proper cover.
Yep, it's spooky and doesn't always work.

Yep, zippo fluid, disolves the gum, then it evaporates.
Works really good on Kay-B-Toys price stickers.

How would you apply the lighter fluid? I am guessing dabbing it with a cotton swab?

| I always use a cotton ball and butane (lighter fluid.) It can work pretty well on older gummy tape, too. |

I have quite a few books with price stickers on (picked up in Brunei, Malaysia and other Asian countries). Needless to say the shop did not bother buying stickers that peel off readily and I actually damaged a couple of covers trying to remove stickers, so I just leave them on.

I heard that if you leave the sticker, it has been known that some 'odd' collectors call it a 'Variant Cover'. The value often multiplies by at least 4. (Wouldn't that be nice) |

What has worked for me is to heat up the sticker with a hair dryer to get the adhesive behind the sticker looser. Use an exacto blade to lift the corner of the sticker and gently & slowly peel back. If the sticker hardens half way through apply more heat. any residue left can usually be picked off by dabbing scotch tape on it. Aim the dryer at the spine edge, so you don't blow the pages open and bend the cover.

I've tried many times to remove stickers with several different things! Butane didn't work for me but maybe i did it wrong!
I'll try the Naptha and keep my fingers crossed next time!
I can successfully peel newer stickers off of comics and figures and hot wheels

Sometimes the glue has been there so long it stains the cover. In that case, I'd just as soon leave it there.

The glue stains won't come out.
With some stubborn stickers, you need to nearly pour fluid on, let it wick under an edge of the sticker, then start pulling the now loose side of the sticker while squirting more fluid at the sticky part. "Half price books" have some tough stickers. (Also works for removing price stickers when giving gifts.)

| You can also try un-du, which you should be able to find in an art supply store. Get the one with the scraper. |

I've never really attempted to remove stickers from comics..but it is interesting that there is some ways about it especially with lighter fluid..never would have thought about that personally.

| Another way is to take a blow dryer and on low or medium setting warme up the sticker. You should be able to peel them off pretty easily. |

So I tried some zippo fluid last night and I had mixed results. I used a qtip to apply it and while it did help remove the residue it requires a lot of being careful. On a few books I either used to much fluid or rubbed too hard to get the gum residue of the sticker off. I took a bit of the ink off as well. Luckily none of these books is of any real value and in some cases it definitely bumped them up a grade in my mind. Just be really careful when doing it. Results may be better with some of the other products mentioned but zippo fluid will help if you are cautious.
