What's with the laughable prices Mile High charges for comics. Most of their comics list for 2-4 times Wizard or Overstreet. They do have some good prices on new common issues, but for any key or older issue you would pay them 3-4 times what you could get it for on Ebay or the local LCS. How do they stay in busines. If I price my comic collection by their catalogue my collection would probably surpass $60,000.

I think sometimes that they must live off of their cheap books as that is all I ever hear of people buying. Mind you they do have some success on Ebay.... then there is the profit he earned from Mile High 2 collection etc. But yeah the prices are bad almost as bad as Comics America.

ugh. don't get me started. unless you enjoy shopping and digging online you might find some good prices on Milehigh. last week i got my first order from them and i ordered over $100. i got some good prices, like Watchmen #1 and Wolverine #3 which looks to be about 9.6. but careful of the grading too. what they laughingly call some comics NM are in fact somewhere as Fine or below.

What did you pay for Watchmen #1? If you don't mind me asking. I need that one and #8 to complete the series.

$35 before throw the old green half price slash on there. Even at that it's probably still overpriced but you can kinda get a good idea of the methods. Price at double what it's worth and then slap a half price sticker on there to make people feel like they get a deal.

All I can tell you is that it seems like milehigh has been having these 60-80% off sales for like 8 months straight. The one thing I will say on the bright side is that these kind of sales have forced (or so it seems) good companies like comicsupply to follow the example. Comicsupply.com's sales have been awesome lately and their prices are fantastic. Definitely my favorite online store.

No doubt... every week I get another email about some incredible 60-80% off sale... when they price so damn high above guide there stock is still over guide during the sale [okay so maybe it isnt but it seems like it is]

I have ordered from them for the first and last time - grading is laughable - I sent them pictures of the books they graded as NM - they have not yet responded.

Comic Supply - they always attend the bi-monthly trade show in the Detroit area - great people, 50 cent sales, and great prices for supplies...

Have also ordered from them and received everything ultra fast (of course, being in Toledo, it is 1-2 day delivery from MI regardless of shipping method).

High praise for Comicsupply.

I don't like how Mile High ships the comics. The last order I had with them was 15-20 issues, and all of them just loose in between 2 cardboard sheets. That's it. Don't like it at all.

I actually don't mind Mile High.
I've bought a handful of items quite cheap.

Their shipping and piackaging is excellent and I had a great experience with their support on an issue.

mile high's grading and pricing is bizarre. It's done intentionally (as Chuck will point blank tell you this if you see him at a show) that he is giving the discount to basically make his prices going market value from the super high prices. I don't have a problem with chuck, though I would never buy a back issue from the guy.

I think Lonestar Comics is just as bad. I get e-mails just like with milehigh saying "our 50% off sale is still in effect." The funny thing is the 50% off sale never goes out of effect. The prices for some of their stuff is pretty good thoough, but they're guilt as sin when it comes to the milehigh tactics of doing business.

The one thing I do like about Lonestar is their trade system. I traded a bunch of useless comics awhile ago using their wantlist system and the end result was I traded them all in for a sweet VF copy of Justice League of America #22.

Well - I sent Mile High the pics of the books I had a complaint about - they offered to refund or exchange them and they would re-imburse me for the media mail shipping...

Hopefully, they are true to their word - sending some books back tomorrow.

Mile High prices are, well, mile high for the most part.

I've only bought stuff from them once and they were mostly TPB's. Got them all for 60% off. The couple odd back issues I got were NM as stated and the whole was very well packaged.

I would probably order from them again if another really good deal came along.

I order quite a bit from mile high..BUT I am very selective in what I buy and when. If I am looking to complete a set, I can usually get a great deal from them with books under $2.00 a piece and free shipping. Silver age and bronze age are way over priced unfortuantely and so I never purhcase those.

Also, with their monthly sales, I always wait to get another 20% off. Makes it worth while.

I was told Chuck walked through an Atlanta convention a couple of years ago and was buyong dealers out. He tool every book they owned. One of those dealers had old Spiderman books. I bet he has no problem selling popular titles regardless of hisprices.

Heh, fair enough.

Yeh he just goes into cons and buys like 5,000 comics a week. They tell me all about it in those damn emails.

I have used Mile High to fill in some of my gaps as well. Their prices can be rather reasonable when they run there sales, expecially with the free shipping. They did send me one wrong comic once, and they offered to swap it out, however I didn't worry about it seeing as it was one I wanted anyway. Other than that they have always been prompt and I haven't had any problems ordering from them. I do agree with a previous poster though, their Silver Ages prices are way high, expecially on Spider-man and other popular titles.

It's damn stupid though, I was looking at The First prices this morning and some at NM were like $2.50 but then a poor was like $2.10 or a VF $4.00 you would think they would apply their sale to all the grades instead of just one or two.

Interestingly enough, I have been doing a lot of comparisons between MileHigh and mycomicshop.com which is Lonestar. All in all, I actually think Lonestar has better prices and seems to have more books. Even without an additional discount against MileHigh's 20% off, Lonestar seems to have the edge.

MileHigh ships quicker then Lonestar. I live in the Chicago area so no real concerns with mail. A lonestar order seem to take on the average of at LEAST 3-4 days longer compared to a milehigh order.

Kali, check them out and see if you have the same experience!

I agree Mile High Comics is good for filling holes on newer comics. But I just cant even see how they come up with their prices on others and get away with it. On some of their listings they would have to do an %80 off sale just to get to fair market value.

mark, I actually tried mycomicshop.com once, a short while back. They took a little longer than expected to arrive, but all my books were in excellent condition, and they were packaged very well. I really liked it, and will be ordering from them again.

You are right on the prices. I did notice that Lonestar does have a lot of books under $1.00, where I paid more with Milehigh, with the discounts.

Side Note: I finally have two stars. Yeah me.

Hey, kali, what was the turnaround for your order. I was seriously considering buying some books from mycomicshop.com, however my patience as well as my apprehension about having my books mailed to me keeps me at bay. convince me, please. I wanna save money, too.

mycomicshop.com only uses USPS. You can choose from Priority or Express. It takes them about 3-4 days to process your order, and depending on what you choose, anywhere from 1-7 additional days for your order to arrive. I guess I've just been spoiled by milehigh, taking 1-2 days to process and 1-2 more days to arrive at my house via UPS.

Also, it takes $40.00 to get free US shipping at milehigh, whereas it takes $50.00 with mycomicshop.com.

But, I can easily spend more than $50.00 when getting back issues. Plus, IMO, the books at mycomicshop.com are better graded. I can wait those extra days for good quality books at a cheaper price.

Thanks, Kali. With Mile High getting so much flak here ( I have had no experience, personally), it's nice to have a reputable alternative to buy from. $50 is nothing for me to spend, either.

I've seen you guys bring up East Coast Comics. Anyone have any experience with these guys? Exactly what kind of quality grading are you getting when purchasing a book for $0.30?

I've ordered from Mile High once, and it's not looking like I'll be going back. To start with, I went to their site and started an order. I didn't have my credit card on hand so i cancelled the order. Went back about thirty minutes later, put the order back in with a few more items, put in all my info, and payed for the order. I then get two emails, on for each order. I email them back asking them to cancel the first one and they respond asking for the invoice number (which I hadn't recieved yet). Upon recieving the emails with the invoice numbers, I email them back giving them to them. The respond saying it's too late to cancel it, just return the package unopened and they'll refund the money when they get it. Cool, I can do that. Upon recieving both packages, I return the wrong one and open the correct one. It's missing a comic. I got charged for it according to the invoice, but it ain't there. I've emailed them twice about this to no avail so far. I'm going to give them a few more days, then write them off and not order from them again. Thankfully, it was a sub-$2 book.

I have another thread running on this topic but in short. Pre-ordered a dynamic forces isn city statue. Instead of informing me they were not going to ship via phone or E-mail they send a letter weeks after it was to ship saying it was out of stock. Check their site and they list them in stock, for $100 more than I was to pay, and a check of Dynamic forces website shows they are in stock their. How you go out of stock on a pre-order? The whole point is so you know how many to order.

Obviously thought they could get more $ from someone else and screwed me as this was a b-day present. This is like getting a pull at a comic shop were they dig through the pulls when someone asks for an issue, non one keeps their pulls their very long.

DF sucks on their customer service. I placed an order December of 2003, and waited, and waited, and wrote email after email, and phone call after phone call, wanting to know where my order was, and finally one of my 20-25 emails gets a reply. "the two CGC comics you ordered were damaged, and we can't send them to you. we can issue you a store credit, or a refund." I opted for the refund about 3 months ago, still nothing. More emails, more calls (they never answer their phone) and still nothing. They can just drive you insane sometimes.

Also, Wizard is almost just as bad. I say almost, because they actually have a customer service department that talks to you and tries to make you happy, but its not THEIR fault that you place an order, and two months later you receive and email saying you items are out of stock (when they can still be viewed on the website). They will send a refund to your credit card. Big woop, now I have to go out and find those books I wanted and pay anywhere between 2-3x more IF I can find them. Thants just the tip of the iceburg. I had 3 orders that never came, after about 3-4 months I contacted them and they said my orders "Fell through the cracks." I had several books on there that are now very hard to find. They tried to please me by sending me substitute books, but none that were as rare, or as expensive as the ones originally ordered. I still have an order that is unfulfilled, but the newest Customer Service person sayes her is taking care of it (she said that on a previous call. same as the two customer service people before her.)

I do have to say ordering directly from Aspen has been a pleasure. Great site, fast shipping, excellent condition, good packing.

I did order once from MileHigh. I got a great price from a "NM" New Avenger #1 McNiven (sp) cover for $10. This was before it came out and they had it listed, so I bought it. It wasn't as good of condition as I had hoped, close to NM, but not NM.

JayCompanyComics has a nice selection. Sometimes a little high on price (for me atleast). I have ordered a few times from them, and the books have been in ~NM condition. This past order there were a few missing COAs for the convention exclusives, but not a big deal to me. I tried to contact them about those, but I haven't received a reply, nor have I followed up.

I guess I ended up venting here, but it lets you know how my orders got handled.

Basicly:
Aspen.com = A
Nice website, Fast shipping, good packing, great condition of their product. The only downside is a lot of their good stuff is out of stock. Altough that is understandable, it is the good stuff, but it says its out of stock when it is out of stock.

DF = D
I have gotten some orders correct and some damaged. Haven't received one order, but the biggest deteminant in my grade to them is Customer Service. They don't have any!

JayCompanyComics = B+
Good books, good packing. Missing COAs. (see above for more.)

MileHigh = B+
not much dealings with them, but my one order was filled.

Wizard = C-
I feel I got shafted bigtime on several occations, for books I really, really wanted. Customer service is alright.

thats just my short and one-sided review.

I found the trick with Dynamic forces when I had a slight problem a couple weeks ago. Call customer service right at 9 AM when it opens, they actually picked up the phone then and got me straightend out.

On the topic of Mile High, have any of you visited the stores in person? This Sunday, I have to fly to Vegas and Denver on business. On Tuesday afternoon, I should have a couple hours to kill --- think I'll go and find their biggest store, and see what there is to see before heading to the airport.

I'll be sure to report back, after I get home.

I used to shop at one of there stores in a mall when I was young. At the time it seemed like the greatest thing ever. I remember it did have a large selection of back issues and at the time a nice 4 for $1 bin. It's been a while though.

As I posted here last week, I visited Mile high's biggest store yesterday (the one on Washington Ave. in Thornton, CO) before flying back to NJ from a business trip. Although it's definitely a big, well-organized shop, it was nothing to write home about. I picked up a handful of back issues (some Uncanny X-men, and Wolverine Origin #6 to complete that series for me). The back issues are mostly VERY over-priced. But, like their website, all were "on sale" for 50% off. i would say that their grading is kind of hit-or-miss. But, if you have the time to pore through the drawers, and need to fill some holes, they're definitely a good source.

My biggest complaint would be that some of their back issues have obviously been damaged because they're just not stored and displayed well. Lots of books are only bagged (no boards) and stored in drawers that are only half-full. So, the comics flop around and slump down, which is murder on the spines. So, you have to be extra careful inspecting the ones you want to buy. This, along with keeping track of the 50% off "real" price slowed me down a little.

On the other hand, the guy working the counter was very helpful and knew his comics. So, I think this store is worth a visit, but only if you're in the neighborhood.

The only way to buy from MH is when there is a sale.

They sell alot more by overpricing and having sales than if they originally priced the comics at half their sale price and had no sales.

I have not had a problem with MH other than the prices. I have only ordered from them a couple of times and the thing I was most pleased about is their wide selection - especially on hard to find things. I usually wait for a huge sale before I would dare send them any money . . .
