One of my favorite comic book lines of the 1980's was the 2000 AD titles issued by Eagle/S.Q.P. from 1983-1993. They are listed in the database under 3 publishers:

Eagle - 82 comics - 1983-1986
Quality - 323 comics - 1986-1989
S.Q.P. - 245 comics - 1989-1993

Total - 650 comics

That should be the total number of comics released before the Judge Dredd license moved to DC in 1994. The S.Q.P. part may be off due to some vagueness in the database over release dates.

Updating for Earl's contributions -

The 2000AD Line

The Original UK Title

The original 2000AD title was started in the UK by IPC in 1977.
In 1997 part of the line including 2000AD was sold to Scandinavian publishers Egmont who from then published in the UK using the Egmont Fleetway imprint. In 2000 Egmont sold 2000AD to computer games company Rebellion but Egmont continued to produce the books for them until October 2001 when Rebellion started to self publish.

1977-Aug 1987 (IPC)
Aug 1987-Oct 1997 (Fleetway)
Oct 1997-Aug 2000 (Egmont Fleetway)
Aug 2000-Oct 2001 (Rebellion owns but Egmont Magazines produces)
Oct 2001-Present (Rebellion self publishes)

The USA Sized Editions

(1983 to 1986) IPC/EAGLE

The 2000AD reprint titles were initially published by IPC under the Eagle Imprint. This was a joint venture between UK publisher 'IPC' and UK packager 'Titan'.

1986 to 1987 QUALITY (DEZ SKINN)

Dez Skinn was a UK publisher whose publication company was Quality Communications. When Dez took over the Eagle line only Judge Dredd and 2000AD Monthly (Vol2) were still ongoing.

1987 to 1994? S.Q.P

S.Q.P is a long established US publisher from New Jersey better known for their art portfolio's and books than their comics but who had produced the cult comic Hot Stuf' in the 1970's. S.Q.P took over publication from Dez but continued to use the Quality logo (and later the Quality/Fleetway logo on the covers presumably to maintain the existing brand recognition.

There are a number of errors regarding publishers in the existing CPG listings, which we are gradually fixing up.

Regards Earl.

Could you list these?

Also why did you leave out the 83 issues of Judge Dredd Megazine (v2)? were these Published in England?

Ok. What a mess the CPG listings are here.

Some of the 40's Quality series like Uncle Sam were listed under the modern publisher, Quality. Many titles are missing. Some stuff is listed under the UK Fleetway publisher rather than S.Q.P. etc.

I am adding the missing titles at the moment.

Regards Earl.

Ok. I added 20 missing titles and about 20 missing issues. Now I need to work out which company published what.

The two 1970's titles under Eagle were actually published by UK publisher Fleetway (AP/IPC) and have been moved.

I have 36 now.

Eagle should be fixed up now. Here is the revised list according to the CPG database.

33 Judge Dredd
6 2000 AD Monthly
5 Judge Dredd: The Judge Child Quest
6 Judge Dredd's Crime Files
7 Nemesis The Warlock
6 Judge Dredd: The Early Cases
5 Robo-Hunter (scan for #4 needed)
4 Strontium Dog
6 Stainless Steel Rat
4 2000 AD Monthly (All scans neeeded)

_____
82
_____

Prices are under review but don't expect much there seems to be very low demand for this line. Country field also needs updating once I check the indicia to see if the publsihers office was in the US or the UK.

With Earl's Contributions, I feel this topic should be limited to the Eagle portion of the titles. Once the S.Q.P./Quality section has been completed there can be a 2nd thread for that company.

With that said, I have 80 of the 82 Eagle comics.

This is turning into a Nightmare. After the Eagle line ended Quality (UK Dez Skinn appears to have taken over. Cover date Apr 1987 seem to be the last Dez Skinn (Quality) issues. There was then a 3 Month Gap until July 1987 when New Jersey based S.Q.P took over but they continued to use the Quality Imprint. Still digging for info.

Regards Earl.

The gap you are referring to takes place between these issues in 1987:

2000 AD Presents 13 - 14
Judge Dredd 7 - 8
Rogue Trooper 7 - 8
Sam Slade - Robo Hunter 7 - 8
Spellbinders 5 - 6

The 1st issues of Slaine the Berserker and Strontium Dog are dated that July and the announced Judge Death Special (in the Midnight Surfer Special and Strontium Dog Special format) was never issued.

There were 43 total comics released between August 1986 and April 1987. The indicia reads:

published monthly by Quality Periodicals, New York, NY. Publisher: Dez Skinn, Art Director: Dave Elliott.(taken from Sam Slade 1)

After the break the indicia reads:

published monthly by S.Q.P. Inc. Tom's, River NJ. Publishers:Bob Keenan and Sal Quartuccio. (taken from Sam Slade 10)

And for reference, Eagle comics are listed in the indicia as:

published by Eagle Comics, IPC Magazines LTD. King's Reach Tower, London. Editor: Nick Landau. Printed in the USA. (taken from Judge Dredd 11)

Both the Quality and S.Q.P examples were printed in Spain.

Maybe my 1st idea to lump all the 2000 AD US Comics in one category wasn't so bad after all.

Mile Ballard also notes that the last few issues of Judge Dredd Vol 1 show IPC as the publisher in the Indicia although the imprint had changed to Quality by then. Dez Skinn and Quality Comics are well known in the UK. They published the Comic 'Warrior' in the 80's where the strip V For Vendetta first appeared. They also publish the magazine 'Comics International' which you may have seen solicited in previews.

It sounds from what you say as if Eagle was an Imprint of the publisher we show as Fleetway (AP/IPC) at CPG.

I checked my copies and think Mike is worng. My Judge Dredd #34 does show Quality as the publisher so our Eagle listing are sound (thank goodness!). Technically the Eagle's should be listed under Fleetway/IPC but I am proposing to leave the Eagle line as seperate at this time.

I am now on 19 Eagle's BTW.

It looks like the Quality Comics published in the USA before S.Q.P took over are...

Steel Claw 1-4
Judge Dredd Vol 1 34-35
Judge Dredd Vol 2 1-7
Rogue Trooper 1-7
Sam Slade 1-7
Spellbinders 1-5
2000AD Presents 5-13

Anyone disagree?

I have recalled reading an article in an old UK fanzine called Speakeasy about 15 years ago that may have said something like these S.Q.P titles would be sold in the UK Newstands 4 months before they were sold in the US. This would probably account for the 4 month publishing gap and may be why they stopped cover dating the comics. After a short while this practice stopped. For a couple of issues they produced double issues for the US market so that they could catch up with the UK. So both double and single numbers exist for some issues.

Earl.

The two issues I don't have yet are 1 and 2 of the six issue 2000 AD Monthly. Mile High has 1 for $3.65 and 2 for $8.85 and I wanted to wait and see if I could find them for less somewhere else.
