Someone has to start a list for First comics so I'm willing.

By my count,First issued 857 comics and graphic novels/collections (not counting 4- 2nd or 3rd printings.)

Of the 857, I have 507.

I changed the total from 856 to 857 do to the Shatter TPB addition.

Wowo! Finally the First comics thread that i couldna get off my lazy butt to start because I kept putting off counting my First Comics!! Thanks for lighting a fire Icouldbe

I love First Comics... Badger #10 (along with whatever Cerebus came out that month) was the first Independant comic I ever purchased. I might've been too much of a Marvel Zombie (or maybe just too young) to appreciate the depth and sarcastic wit of the characters, but years later, after becoming a born again comic fiend, First is one of my favorite publishers.. I LOVE Badger, Lone Wolf and Cub, and especially the adaptations of Moorcock's Elric.

I'm currently working towards a full collection....got a few more to go, but I'm getting there!

I have 766 First comics issues (with 275 dupes)

My full count numbers are a little off of yours...I was wondering if you could post your Master list? (or maybe Earl, the Wise Sage of the Master List Postings could post one)

If you counted them directly off the CPG there might be a few mistakes (for example Grimjack only goes to issue 81 and many of the Graphic Novels are listed solo, plus duplicated in the "First Graphic Novels" listing)

by my count i need 67 issues to complete my run ( I am including reprint TPB/Collections from the "First Graphic Novels" listing, but am NOT including other First published TPB's {ie LW&C, Next Nexus, Team Yankee, Shatter, Jon Sable} in my count)

...so this would put my full list at 833 (+5 mabove listed tPBs) = 838

any help with clarifying Master List Issues would be appreciated!!

great listing, and thanks because somehow I had left Squalor off my list...Here is what I see wrong with it:

Badger goes to 70 not 66

Grimjack (to the best of my knowledge and research) only goes to 81 and NOT to 85 as listed by CPG...if anyone knows that it does go to 85 please shoot me some info, as all my research only shows it going to 81

There are TWO Time2 Graphic Novels...one is listed in the FGN listing (only under Time2) but i have in my collection Time2: The Epiphany and Time2: The Satisfaction of Black Maria

Also: If anyone has any information on late run Classics Illustrated Issues 28 and 29 please let me know what the titles are...I just recently won a First/Berkely Classics Illusytrated lot that includes 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, so I am giuessing that is one of the last two...If i can find out the name of the other issue it will make my search for it easier....

any other info about odd issues/TPBs that are not on CPG or this master list will be appreciated! Thanks

Just got my copy of 20,000 Leagues in the mail and it is NOT First, but Dark Horse Classics...therefore I am still looking for any info as to what adaptations issues 28 and 29 of First/Berkeley Classics Illustrated are, so I can look for them (if they were even published at all) thanks!!

American Flagg! collections and one-shots

listed in First Comics Graphic Novel
#3 Hard Times*
#9 Time2
#12 Southern Comfort*
#20 State of the Union*

and listed in database under 'A'
Hard Times*
Southern Comfort*
State of the Union*
Special #1 (says Time2 on cover)

Where the two Time2 graphic novel's (Epiphany and The Satisfaction of Black Maria) fit in I am not sure. At least one is not in the database but is either #9 or is that also a different comic. The special is a different comic. 5 of these are in the grand total but should it be 6 or 7?

New for 3/20/2005, I just found the Epiphany and Black Mariah GN's in one of my magazine boxes. The Epiphany is the First Comics Graphic Novel (should be # 8 not 9) from Nov 1986. The Satisfation of Black Mariah from Sep 1987 is missing from the database. I will adjust the above listing.

We are in the process of reviewing CPG's 'First Comics' listings. What would you First collectors prefer to see? - The graphic Novels all listed under one 'First Graphic Novels' entry or listed separately? Our current thinking is to list them separately as only the early ones were numbered.

Regards Earl.

SHEESH KEBAB! Icouldbe is catching up 2 me!!!! The Race is on!!!!

In response to your question Earl I think that if they were all listed you might want to include a parenthetical (also known as First Graphic Novel #..) the also listed individually Gns might help others who dont know to look at FGN category...mebbe you could leave both in?

I've been a big First Head for quite some time and have learned much about the Publisher from CPG as well as cross referencing some of the bigger retailers (mile hi and mycomicsshop.com)as well as checking ebay listings for sale ... but the problem is that this site is pretty much the comprehensive listing for First Publications I've been able to find...

The FGN listing is all good...it is compiled and correct

the problem is finding all of those unknown or TPB's/GN's that were published closer to the time of First going belly up...

I've been throwing all ,my knowledge in this thread after icouldbe started it up.... but it seems to be us two that know the most about the publishing run? and there still seems ot be some mystery info out there, hehe

Nice job Icouldbe on the addemdums to the list...makes it a lot more comprehensive with the explanations in ()

Im not really into collecting TPBs for issues of series I already have...so I'll prolly leave these to very last and might only buy em to eventually become a First completist...(although there's probably still some books/TPBs out there we still dont have on the list)

Total of 45 issues left in my quest.......

Re: First Graphic Novels

From what I can tell #4 and #19 (the Nexus G.N.'s) are the same. 19 is just a new printing with a higher price.

Also on the back of Grimjack 46 is an ad for Starslayer:the Log of the Jolly Roger graphic novel. Was this ever released?

not really sure about the Starslayer GN, icouldbe (I dont see it on CPG, mile high or mycoomicsshop, so I wonder if it exists).... The TPBs from this company are quite confusing....I guess we'll have to piece em together if we see actual evidence of the books. (as in listed on a selling compsnys website or viewing an actual ebay auction)

I got the TPBs that I added to your list from mycomicsshop.com's inventory listing...

my copy of Nexus GN must be number 4 as it's a stated first printing copyright 1985 with a 6.95 cover price...

I can't find any evidence that Ghostbusters #5 and #6 exist. Thoughts?

Anyone know how many Lone Wolf collected editions were published? CPG lists one under FGN series and one in the main Lone Wolf listing. Are these the same books?

Thanks

CPG has 25 graphic novels listed under the FIRST GRAPHIC NOVEL series. Ten of these are duplicated as individual listings.
Do we know if all 25 were actually numbered and if not which of the novels was the last one numbered?

I thought i saw a full set of Filmation Ghostbusters for sale on ebay a while ago 1-6, but I may have been mistaken or just can't remember... I have 1-4 in pretty shoddy condition, and I think i would've jumped on it if i saw it...but i'm wondering if there MIGHT be a 5 and 6...

as far as I know the LW&C TPB is the same, although I do not own it yet...it's maddening when you look through listings for a TRUE TPB or GN and have to sift through endless listings of books that actually ARE NOT TPB's or GN's but are listed as such (such as stand alone LW&C issues)
I believe the LW&C TPB and the B&W Prestige format listed in the CPG are one and the same ( the scan for said B&W prestige/TPB is definately wrong though)

As far as I know NONE of the First Graphic NOvels (FGN's) were listed with the FGN number on the cover or spine..the earlier ones had the listing in the indica/copyright page

here is the bibliographic data from the FGN's I currently own:

1. Beowulf: (First Graphic Novel #1) Jan 1984, stated 1st printing
2. Time Beavers: (First Graphic Novel #2) May 1985, stated 1st printing
3.
4. The Original Nexus: (First Graphic Novel #4) Nov 1985, stated 1st printing
5. The Enchanted Apples of Oz: (First Graphic Novel #5) April 1986, stated 1st printing
6. Elric of Melnibone: (no stated FGN # in indicia) May 1986, stated 1st printing
7. The Secret Island of Oz: (First Graphic Novel #7) Oct 1986, stated 1st printing
8. Time 2: The Epiphany: (First Graphic Novel #8) Nov 1986, stated 1st printing

Time 2: The Satisfaction of Black Maria (no stated FGN # in indicia) Sept 1987, stated 1st printing

Ice King of Oz: (no stated FGN # in indicia) copyright 1987, Second Printing Sept, 1990

Hexbreaker: A Badger Graphic Novel (no stated FGN # in indicia) Mar 1988, stated 1st printing

Forgotten Forest of Oz: (no stated FGN # in indicia) Oct 1988, stated 1st printing

Demon Knight: A Grimjack Graphic Novel (no stated FGN # in indicia) Nov 1989, stated 1st printing

so the last one I have a designated FGN # in the indicia for is #8

what is the listing in the CPG # 20 "Team America" supposed to be? is it Team Yankee mistyped?

I recently queried a seller on enbay about the Team Yankee TPB and they replied that it stated Berkely Publishing on the indicia...

I know First published their Classics Illustrated in conjunction with Berkely, and I wonder if they took the opportunity to push out a few trades when First went bust...

until we actually eyeball the indicia for said GNs/Tpbs, I guess we will have toi keep guessing...

hehe, I plan to get them all so I shall edit the stuff in here as I pick them up

There are at least 25 First Graphic Novels/TPB's. They were never numbered on the cover or spine. The early one's were numbered in the indicia. It looks like this numbering stopped somewhere between the 9th and 12th novel that they issued.

CPG now list the graphic novels as individual series. The ones that were numbered in the indicia have the (FIRST COMICS GRAPHIC NOVEL #) shown in brackets after the main title.

The TPB's are generally shown at the end of the relevant mini series listing.

The old 'FIRST COMICS GRAPHIC NOVELS' listing will remain in the database for a period in case additional information comes to light. (I don't want to delete them all only to find we are wrong and they need re-adding again).

from the research I have done (asking sellers on Ebay to read the indicia) I have found that Team Yankee TPB is published by Berkeley Publishing and Shatter TPB is published by Ballantine Fawcett Gold Medal...so I dont think they belong in the list...

I think Jon Sable tpb might be published by Fawcett also...I seem to have that written on my list but I cant find the email the seller responded to my question with...

Next Nexus and LW&C are the only two TPBs i havent tried to verify yet, but I think they might be FIrst comics though

4 Nexus Vol 1 (in variant 1) that you have listed above is Capital Comics

and Hawkmoon: Sword of Dawn is mis-titled in the latest list

Earl, For your questions:

1 - I only have Ghostbusters 1 - 4.

2A - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Book 2 is listed as First Graphic Novel number 10, June 1987.

2B - Elric: Sailor on the Seas of Fate TPB, August 1987, has no other listing. (It is in the Reference list as number 11)

3 - The Jon Sable Freelance TPB is from Sept. 1987 by a Fawcett Columbine book, Published by Ballantine Books, a division of Random House Inc. under exclusive license of First Comics Inc . I am curious why this was released in this manner?

I can only surmise that Grell might've retained TPB rights and gotten a better deal through Fawcett? It's an interesting question. Theres a lot of the History of First Comics that is still in the dark to me...

In any case Jon Sable TPB is not a First PUblication

Three Corrections:

DREADSTAR:27 - 64 = 38 total (1 - 26 from Epic) - not 64.
NEXUS:7 - 80 = 74 total (1-6 from Capital) - not 80.
STARSLAYER:7-34 = 28 total (1 - 6 from Pacific) - not 27.

So 888 - 32 + 1 = 857 total.

Otherwise, I think we finally have it correct.

OK - just doubled my FIRST collection when a friend gave me 34 issues of Lone Wolf and Cub - don't know how long I will hang on to them, but my First count is now at a whopping...

LW&C is one of my favorite comics series of all times! I have the Complete run of First Comics and am hunting for the right auction at the right price to pick up the 1-28 Dark Horse Volumes

Well, i hope i'm not opening up a can of worms here but with all the reprints i get 900 first comics printed. though at least two of them are S&N copies of the American Flagg Hardcovers.

If First Released their Hardcover Graphic novels in both regular HC & S&N HC do these count as two seperate books? if they don't my count goes down to 898.

There are various signed comics but i don't count them, since you could get a comic signed at a convention. However i counted any books that were Signed & Numbered because i feel that since the company released the books this way it makes for a different variation from the publisher for these books.

I thought these were published by Graphitti rather than First. CPG lists them here...
