As far as this list goes, you should probably leave off Plasm #0. One collector reportedly owns a "stand alone" Plasm #0, but more than likely it is a test printing of some kind and not an official release. The only other ways to get this was through the card set or by buying a copy of Previews Magazine (Diamond's catalog). Plasm #0 does not qualify as "comics only" any more than the installments Good Guys #1.5 or Glory #0. You also need to add another variant of Defiant Genesis. Reportedly there is a convention version with a Dark Dominion card insert and a second one without the insert, there is a third version without the convention banner on the cover (nor the card insert). No one has reported owning a card insert in a bannerless issues. It's possible 4 versions exist, but only the three are known. There is no Dark Dominion #0 comic, only the card set.

So, by my math, 65-2+1 = 64 actual comic format comics.

I own 61 of those 64. If you are counting the card sets for WOP #0 & DD #0 then I own 66. If you count Previews Magazine with the Plasm #0 bound in then I own 67 comics.

I am only missing Splatterbal 1B (a second printing that came with a 2nd edition binder), and 2 of the Defiant Genesis variations. My copy of Defiant Genesis has the convention banner and it is without the card insert..... Whew! I hope that makes sense.

I'll let you figure out what constitutes "comics only"

As far as the Good Guys #1.5 installments go ion Previews Magazine, I have yet to locate any copies in my collection. I do own all 4 installments of Glory #0 in Overstreet's magazine.

Thanks. That explains why I can't find a copy of Dark Dominion #0 (I just completed #1 to #10).

Do you know the story with the Prudence and Caution Spanish Language edition comics BTW? Were these sold in the southern US or elsewhere?

The Spanish editions were solicited side by side with the English language versions. There was no special solicitation nor anything different about how you got it. Retailers could order one just as easily as the other and they were available in all areas. Obviously a retailer in Southern Texas or Southern California might be more likely to order a Spanish language copy but it was the retailers choice based on what they thought they could sell.

I preordered both when they came out, so I've always owned one of each.
One thing buyers need to be aware of is that P&C #2 has the exact same cover on the Spanish & English versions. Without opening the book and looking at the word balloons inside you can't tell the difference. Retailers selling #2 might be unaware that they are selling a Spanish language version. It would be a good idea to ask or if possible look yourself when buying a copy. The difference between the Spanish & English #1 is marked on the cover, so it's not a problem when buying #1.

The list was never really corrected for the thread, so I'm not sure if the total is correct. If you go by comics only, there is no official release of Plasm #0 as a standalone comic. Some people claim to have them, but they are extremely rare and most likely they are just test printings. The official Plasm #0 was released as a bound in inclusion supplied with the Previews catalog.

As far as Defiant Genesis goes, there are 3 versions. One with the yellow banner on the cover and no card insert, one with the yellow banner on the cover and a card insert inside (limited to 10,000 copies), and one with no yellow banner on the cover. The onbe without the yellow banner was probably sold on a Home Shopping Network.

There is no Dark Dominion #0 comic book. You had to buy a card binder and fill it with cards to get the story.

Whacked #1 is a mystery. There is no official connection between DEFIANT and the Whacked #1 comic. There are only circumstantial connections. They had similar production vales and quality. They had one shared colorist. Whacked #1 has a "River Group" imprint, not DEFIANT. The River Group was the primary investor in DEFIANT. DEFIANT repeatedly said they had no control over products released by the River Group. My guess (or theory) is that The River Group published this comic out of spite and also as part of a test marketing effort. The writer was a respected comedy writer for TV I think. It's entitely possible that the River Group was just experimenting with non-superhero content to see if they needed Jim Shooter. Who knows.

By adjusting Earls previous list you get this....

Defiant Checklist:
(Comics Only)

A full set = 63 Comics as follows...

Thanks for the updates...

I'll try and get the database corrected this weekend...

The non-comic items we'll probably pull and save for our upcoming "comic-related" database...

Thanks for all of your help!

Okay,

The list is now at 64...
Added the third variant of Defiant Genesis and moved 'Whacked'...

The only 'non-comic' item I left in was the Plasm #0 that's bound within Previews...since it's the only one that's a "whole" comic...

I still need...

Birth of the Defiant Universe

Defiant Genesis With No Card Insert - I was not originally including this as a variant. Are they not the same priniting/edtion of the comic? If you got a two copies and removed a card from one how would you tell the difference?

The Great Grimmax 0

Prudence and Caution 2 (Spanish Language)

Splatterball 1A, 1B (How do you tell the difference)

Warriors of Plasm TPB

Not sure how hard to get these are. Just not got around to really looking for them yet.

Birth of the Defiant Universe
I've lost the last two by not going higher than $60...the first one sold at $100...the second at $68...

I was wondering that myself...picked up 3 of the "card insert" issues at $1.00 each

The Great Grimmax 0
Pulled that one out of a 25 cent bin last summer...

Prudence and Caution 2 (Spanish Language)
Looking for one myself...

Splatterball 1A, 1B (How do you tell the difference)
Each one was sealed with the appropriate edition of the binder...and has the corresponding "seal" in the bottom left corner of the cover...

Warriors of Plasm TPB
Paid twenty cents last year on Ebay...

If you removed the card insert, presumably they'd be the same. Why would you remoive the card insert? The comic is more rare with the insert. It's no different than Magnus #0 with and without cards, the only difference is that Magnus #0 is more rare without the cards.

These come with the binders. They are stamped in foil on the cover. If you buy a 1st print binder, you are supposed to get a 1st printing Splatterball. If you buy a second printing binder, you should get a 2nd printing of splatterball. The 3rd printing binders (rare) did not have the comic. I think 1st printing are gold foil, 2nd printings are silver foil. Either way, the foil words tell you which edition it is.

Relatively easy to get, but I'd bet it's a lower print run than most of the others. $5 is a fair price.

The first one is the toughest. P&C Spanish has gone for as much as $15 I believe. Genesis with card insert is tough, but you don't have that on your list. Genesis with no banner on the cover is extremely tough. It was probably sold on a Home Shopping Network.

I was wondering that myself...picked up 3 of the "card insert" issues at $1.00 each

Excellent deal. You have 3 of something I don't have.

I'm curious as to what information lead you to list the Comicfest w/o cards?
The reason I ask...during that time I was heavy into non-sports cards...and acquired quite a few of the card sheets without ever seeing the comic...or even knowing it existed. From a non-sports point of view the value would be in the cards...and I could see how an enterprising person might remove the insert and work both markets...

The card insert was only available to people who preregistered for the entire show and it was limited to I think (if memory serves me correctly) 10,000 copies. The "regular" version for people who did not preregister for the full show did not have the card insert. I own the one without the card insert. Living in the Southeast, I had never seen a card insert. The ones that drifted south usually did not have the cards. Both are legitimate variants. I have a copy of either a flyer or an ad for the show where it tells how you get the carded/premium version.

BTW, for the sake of clarity... I believe the card insert is a dark dominion set of cards that that is stapled into the book. If you got a loose set of cards with the comic, that is not the variant.

The only reason I say that is because a lot of card inserts float around and these -- if pulled from the books -- would have staple holes in them. Most Defiant card collectors were so burnt after the Plasm debacle that they didn't even try to collect all the Dark Dominion cards.

Too many. Unless you are going for dark Dominion Level 2 cards or some of the obscure "good guys" promo sheets, I don't see the cards as really having much value. There is a collector in Arizona who has virtually everything. he might be missing some color border variants on the card that shipped with the Overstreet Fan Magazine...issue #4(?) I actually can't stand cards. You couldn't pay me to look for these obscurities.

I have 56 Defiant comics, including the Warriors of Plasm #0 card set.

I am missing some of the harder to find Defiants such as all the non-comic items, minus the Warriors of Plasm # 0 card set. (I wish I could find them, I didn't know there was any kind of Glory #0 and The Good Guys was my favorite Defiant title of all of them.) I also don't have the spanish language versions of Prudence and Caution, Birth of the Defiant Universe, Defiant Genesis, Splatterbal 1B, as well as the second Graphic Novel since it was a reprint of issues I had (my comic shop does have a copy of it for sale at half price though, maybe I should pick it up.

Still, except for a couple of variants and limited editions I have the complete collection of actual comics. So I am proud of that achievment. And what's more I bought them all when they first came out, no e-bay or back issue bin's for this Defiant collector:)

Incedently I LOVED Defiant comics. I thought they put out the most consistently good super hero stories of the time and hold up amazingly well despite being over 10 years old. It's a damn shame they went bankrupt so soon after they started. In fact I quit reading comic books within a year of them going down as at the time they were the only ones I truly looked forward to reading, and I only came back to comic books about 4 months ago, so as you can tell that was a long time. I can only imagine the great stuff Defiant would have given us (The Great Grimmax I can allready tell would have been a great series) had they continued.

I agree defiant were great ,i particularly liked Dark Dominion and the Schism cross over toward the end looked like it was going to be really good.
As you say you left comics very soon after that ,did you get to try Jim Shootere Broadway comics ,I thought they were even better than the Defiant stuff."Fatale" and "Powers that be" particularly.

I had a more detailed site, but it was too much of a distraction. I like Defiant, but I have no interest in making it my life. This list might be helpful...

So how hard is it to get a Defiant Genesis with no card insert? I have three WITH the card inserts and ZERO without(and I kept hearing that the ones with the insert were the rarer ones!)
