Just recently, I decided that I would like some pieces of original comic art (batman related) I've already won one piece (yet to arrive) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2206239875
Does anyone have any suggestions when it comes to collecting art? I have no idea what art proces go for, no idea how to display it (or even if you display it) etc.
Anyone have any suggestions or know of a good reference site?

I say collect what you like! Dont buy pieces you dont like. No sence in having art you dont enjoy!

I buy some art, but I don't take it seriously.
My first art purchases were from Budd Root at Heroes Con. While there, I had an opportunity to buy and unpublished Defiant comics page, but passed. Years later, that missed opportunity stayed in my memory and after buying some color art from Valiant Comics & Defiant I then sought to buy any unpublished Defiant or Broadway comics pages that I could get at a reasonable price.
I bought J.G. Jones' unpublished pages to Fatale#0 (Broadway Comics). I bought some of his unpublished Dark Dominion (Defiant Comics)pages. I bought all of Tim Hamilton's unpublished art from Fatale #7 and Makeshift #1-3 (both Broadway Comics). I bought a lot of "Dogs of War" pages (Defiant Comics) including some unplublished pages to #6. I've also received a lot of unpublished scans of unpublised art.
My hope was to merge as much of the unpublished art with unpublished scripts as possible. Not everyone was willing to help facilitate that process, so I abandoned it a few months ago.
I also own some art by Ivan Brunetti. I own a page of blue pencils from Gary Spencer Milledge (Abiogenesis Press). That's pretty much it. Nothing serious.
I doubt I'll buy anything for awhile.
The unpublished Makeshift art is inked by Dick Giordano. That's pretty cool.

I like it, but do not collect it. I just don't have the space for it. ( not out of space, just not for that type of collecting).
But, If it some were given to me.......then I'd take it. But, other than that, nope.

I collect / sell - but obviously I'm buying because I love artwork (my major is in fine arts, even if I am obviously more of an illustration fan).
A few of my favorite right now; each for different reasons.

Note; those are all for book covers. I own some artwork to the Marvel adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, and a number of solid pages from Hate by Bagge.
Art is really the only thing I collect...I read graphic novels and have never felt that owning the comic did anything special for me. But original art. Oooh-la-la. |

I bought my first pieces from ebay earlier this year. Just the concept of owning an original piece of art had me all giddy and I was willing to purchase ANY original piece for a reasonable price. I ended up with a Daredevil Annual page and a page from Nevada (DC Vertigo).
Ebay hasn't done me wrong yet, so I continue to buy there. My latest piece is a page from The Walking Dead #1 that I bought a few months ago. I'm so happy with it I haven't felt the need to buy anything since. |

I bought my first piece of original art from William Messner Loebs, the author of Journey and the then-writer of Flash. That was about 1987 or 1988. Then, around 1993 or 1994, I bought some more art from Chuck Wojtkewicz, who was then drawing Justice League America. I bought a splash page and two character pages (no costumes on these, though) and he only charged me $35. The next convention I attended in Ashland, Ky., the same year, I was able to get a color drawing from Don Rosa, but I passed because it was something like $50 and, at that time, that was a lot of cash for someone who was only making a few hundred dollars a month and had bills to pay. Then, I found the Internet. I got burned by a dealer who charged me nearly $1000 each for two Charlton covers. He hooked me by selling me a Matt Baker page for $325, then told me the other two covers were good deals and that I'd never find them as cheap as he was selling. So, I then bought some Miracleman artwork from Ricky Wong, who also sold me his Miracleman 4 cover art (I paid $1000 for it and then traded it for $6200 worth of art). I then traded the trade material for a Steve Ditko Charlton cover and got burned on that one, by the dealer who had sold me the other two Charlton covers. Yes, I'm a big Charlton fan. So, I then started buying some other pieces here and there, bought a Weird Western Tales 45 cover from Jim Woodall and traded it for the cover art to Rom 32. I've made several trades, including my Ditko Charlton cover and some other stuff for the cover art to Crisis on Infinite Earths 6 (the Anti-Monitor cover art and not the Flash or Supergirl death covers; Dr. Hari Nadu and Jon Mancuta have those, respectively), which I turned around and traded for three covers and a Jim Starlin Warlock splash that I really liked, but ended up trading for a Jim Aparo Brave and the Bold cover and a Bob Layton Power Man and Iron Fist cover that I ended up trading with the Rom 32 and two Sal Buscema Hulk pages for a Classic X-Men page by Kieron Dwyer, a Jack Kirby Super Powers cover, a Dick Giordano Flash cover and a Carmine Infantino Flash cover. In the meantime, I've traded (with some cash) the cover art to Super Friends 29 for the Flash 323 cover art by Infantino and traded my a few other pieces for a Howard Chaykin Blackhawk cover and a Ramona Fradon Super Friends 11 cover. The Blackhawk cover I traded to Jim Cardillo for his Red Tornado 2 cover by Infantino. Wow. That's a lot of trades. And I just made a trade yesterday morning with Tom Fleming of www.fanfare-se.com for his first appearance of Spider-Woman splash from Marvel Spotlight 32 for my Steve Rude Jimmy Olsen trade paperback cover art. I've still got several nice pieces in my personal collection, including some John Byrne Doomsday+1 pages, a Byrne Indiana Jones No. 1 page, a Steve Bissette Swamp Thing commission, an LB Cole Classics Illustrated page, a Teri S. Wood Swamp Thing commission, an Al Milgrom Captain Marvel commission, a Gene Fawcette Flash Gordon page, a Luke McDonnell Iron Man commission, a Steve Bissette and John Totleben Bizarre Adventures Dracula page, the Tom Palmer cover art to Tomb of Dracula 66, and the Dan Parent original art to the Veronica 155 lead story which has me and my wife drawn in as a cameo on a movie screen. Not a bad lot of art, eh? Mike B. |

| I also passed on buying Frank Miller Dark Knight pages when they were a mere $1300-$1700 each. A guy came to a convention and had a whole book full of the originals and he wanted some really cheap prices for the pages. Now, I see those pages on eBay for prices ranging from $10,000-$15,000. Sucks to be me, I guess. I wish I had a time machine ... |

I'm not a fan of Miller's art. You'd have to pay me to take a page. The best thing about any of Miller's art in my opinion is Klaus Janson inks. The Daredevil issues they did together are the only art I liked. I was cringing when I saw the trailer to Sin City monday night. It looks like artsy turned to gaudy on the big screen.

I agree Miller's art in DKR sucked big time. That's yet another reason I find that story to be highly over rated. |

I thought the Klaus Janson-inked part was better than the part of the book not inked by Janson. Still, whether you like Miller or not, owning a page of his original art would still be cool, especially if you'd bought it way back when and sold it now. You'd make a fortune! But, to me, original art is to be collected purely out of love for the artform itself. I don't collect original art hoping to make a big profit off of it when and if I decide to sell. I buy it because I love it. I have 15 or 16 covers, a few splashes and a lot of panel pages and I want more, just like I do with comics. But, with the original comic art I own, I feel like I'm holding in my hands a Rembrandt or a Picasso even if it's only Kirby, Starlin or Infantino (and I say "even if it's only" in a sarcastic way, because, to me, those are classic illustrators, too). I believe that, one day, original comic art is going to be revered like classic paintings. I mean, look at what some covers would cost if they came up for sale: $75,000 for the death of Supergirl Crisis on Infinite Earths cover. Heck, I've got a few pieces worth thousands of dollars. I believe that the classic covers are going to be the ones that reach the stratosphere. Artists like Neal Adams, Jack Kirby, Will Eisner, Berni Wrightson, Jim Starlin, Frank Brunner, Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, those who have created masterpieces, will be revered like Picasso and Rembrandt. Art lovers will one day have to accept comic art as true art. It's got to happen one of these days and when it does, people who thought art was overpriced will wish they'd paid the small prices for comic art today so they could reap the rewards tomorrow. |

I agree with the advice to collect what you enjoy. Most of the artwork I have purchased has been under $100. They have a great value to me. I am prepared to shell out the bucks when needed, on that occassion when I come across my white whale, the cover to silver surfer #4, we can all dream.

I bought my Olivia watercolor sketch and when it was suggested the I could get it personalized by the model AND the artist at one show, I said WTF and didn't worry about how it affected the value. I don't think the stars align like that very often. If you buy what you like, you never have to care if anyone else agrees with your choice or not. I was not for them.

i only collect original art from Verotik. i used to have a couple non-Verotik pieces by Tim Vigil but i wound up selling them. i decided to focus only on Verotik. i've been buying them for about 2-3 years now and i have about 80 pieces in my collection. the only ones i would mat and frame are the Bisley and Suydam ones, maybe the Death Dealer pages by Liam Sharp.

Verotik.. great stuff! Danzig had some of the best artists in the field working for him ..to bad HE had to write.. Hopefully there still is a small chanche that we will see a DeatDealer comic someday ..Bisley, Sharp & Suydam were amazing on the series! ..as were the other artists on other titels (I love Matin Emond's stuff ..to bad i wasn't able to obtain some of his original work). There aren't many comics/magazines like that ..maybe Liam Sharp's Event Horizon~

Marty was the sh!t. i was lucky enough to buy one of his Verotik pieces. i also got a sketch of Igrat done by him. he was so talented, it's a shame what happened.
Verotik doesn't have the same caliber artists doing work for the very often anymore. Biz occasionally does something and Glenn commissioned Joe Chiodo for a lot of painted stuff. a new Satanika comic comes out in July with a killer cover by Dorian Cleavenger and a story by Japanese artist Junko Mizuno. it should be interesting to say the least.
