DeadOne (11/2/2008)
. Variant covers will go away if you stop buying them.
. Comic prices will lower if you stop buying them.
. Values will go up when less are produced (when you stop buying them).

| I say, if your even considering getting someones illegible chimp scribbles, best be sure to have an additional unsigned copy in the wings to cover your backside.

i can relate to the prices being out of hand. but as for variants I have two points to make:
1.doing them on purpose is just lame marketing it was a neat idea but because no one thought it through it got out of hand now some people expect it. which brings me to number
2. I think the idea of variants came from the Accidental screw ups of those who were printing the books. Like for example, lets say in the 80's i noticed there were books that had the same story that weren't reprints or second printings but the covers were different because of direct market copies having or not having bar codes, or the price changed, or someone in the corporate offices changes his mind about a color scheme 30,000 copies into the run. Once it's changed VOILA......... variants.
Now every one obsesses over the 30,000 that were originally printed same story diff cover. Now corporate gets wind of the underground "chase for the first 30,000. And BOOM let's do this on purpose! great for those who care. PAIN IN THE A** for completionistic collectors.
My 2...........
