I meant discounts in my prior post.

Well, I get a 15% discount and free bags and boards vs what from a mail order? 25-30% and then have to pay shipping? So all told I might pay and extra 5-10%, which, for the amount I but, means about $5-10 more a month. That's worth it to me to supprot an LCS that I really like and has taken care of me on more than one occasion.

I do both.
I have a pull list at my LCS (Bi-Monthly).And I also have subscriptions
to Amazing Spider-Man,Ultimate Spider-Man,Ultimate Avengers,and Captain America.

I've only received one damaged issue so far. That issue was happily replaced by the
friendly folks at Marvel.

Hope that helps.

All that said, SCLINGERMAN never said which company he uses.

My bad. We get our 3 Marvel subscriptions from Marvel (their website), and our 1 DC subscription from DC (their website).

My main LCS where most of my money goes, does not do new comics. Their "new" is maybe about a year or more old.
This places sells a lot of modern comics for a REAL low price, like $1.00
Older ones (Bronze) are also a very good price, often right at or below what is listed on CPG.

The LCS where we DO get new comics that we don't get via subscription, does not carry ALL of the ones my son likes (Marvel Adventures).
This places sells modern comics for cover price or more, not $1.00
Older ones (Bronze) are more expensive, but they have half-off sales once a month.

I completely understand why a lot of people use mail order servies.; and have considered it myself. There are quite a few advantages. However, I really like my LCS and like to support local businesses when possible so I still stick with a pull list.
I have a pull list but they always seem to forget this or that or Say I tell them if its got Frank castle in it put it in my box .Well they can remember everyones request but I do get things like cover variants for no extra charge .And I do like this idea of free bags and boards instead of a small percentage off at the register .

I was going to my LCS but its a 30 to 40 minute drive one way so I decided to try the internet. I was ordering from mailordercomics.com for about a year, I was saving lots of money with them never had a problem. Then I heard about DCBS.com compared their prices against mailordercomics.com and I saving even more money. With DCBS they have one price shipping, mailordercomics always was different each month depending on what you ordered. DCBS comics that are 3.99 are 2.39, 2.99 are 1.79 they are a few cents cheaper than mailordercomics. Also every month you can find a code for an extra % off on certain comic books. The order I have for January if I bought at my LCS would cost me before tax and gas $127.20 at mailordercomics before shipping would cost me $76.97 and at DCBS before shipping it would cost me 68.01. I think after shipping I am saving usually ten bucks a month going with DCBS.

For me locally, I get no discount and it is 30 miles round trip, so, I spend an additional $6 on gas.  DCBS gives 35% discount and $4.95 shipping.  How can I go wrong?

Like I said in my OP, I get why some people fo it. For some, like you, it makes way more since to order online. Luckily, I have about 10 comic stores within a 20 mile radius of me, so it makes it a lot easier.

Support at what cost to you?

Mail order would save me nothing. I get a small discount (15%) and while the discounts might, in theory, save me money with a mail order service shipping almost completely wipes out any significant savings.

IMO the mail order services will not be giving significant savings forever and when the MO market contracts lots of people will be screwed because there will be less B&M outlets. I foresee lots of lost business fairly soon once Marvel and Disney get their marketing scheme figured out. I figure many of the Marvel Zombies will abandon their LCS's and MO services because those places will not have all the exclusives the Disney stores will offer.

Mind you it won't be as bad as 1995.

You really think so?  I'd think that the mail order stores will out last most B&M locations.  They serve a much larger customer base out of a smaller physical space.  They don't need to rent retail space and can instead operate out of just about any location including cheaper warehouse locations.  Places like mailordercomics.com orders only what is prepaid by their customers which means that they aren't wasting space maintaining old stock and don't have to anticipate what their customers might want to buy from them next month.  I'm not sure if I understand why you think their discounts will dry up?  They can offer greater discounts because their operating expenses are much less than a B&M store.  I think the opposite will probably happen.  The LCS will go the way of newstands and traditional distribution.  They won't totally go away, but they won't be very prevalent.  I don't see Disney pulling back from distributing through Diamond, that wouldn't help them make more money.  They don't have a large enough national retail presence to offset the loss.

As for shipping costs, that really depends on how frequently you need to get your new comics.  I pay $5 a month for my shipping costs.  Granted, I only get my comics monthly, but getting 38%-75% off is much better than getting my comics weekly.  I break even after 4-5 comics and I order 30-40 comics a month so the savings is more than you're implying.

If you only buy a handful of comics, I can see your point.  If it doesn't fit your personal situation, that's understandable, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't benefit many or that it will be going away anytime soon, or even sooner than your preferred method of buying new books.
