So we all have our monthly lists that we look forward too. I utilize the comic store that is a few blocks down the street from me. I have a monthly pull list there. But he always seems to screw something up and he only orders per request for a lot of my titles. So if he misses one of mine I have to go looking for my missing copies in other towns.

My question is... How many of you guys actually do the mail order subscription? Or are a lot of you still doing pull lists like me? With the mail order subscriptions, how is the condition of the arrivals? Do they ship monthly? I need some opinions.

Thanks guys,

Ex,

I use DCBS so it is a monthly order.  No issues.

I have had mail-order for my son for a couple years now. Mostly Marvel Adventure ones at first (because he's young)... but now he's changed over to DareDevil and Ultimate Spider-Man. They arrive flat in a sealed plastic 'bag' with a backboard in perfect condition.
We still go to the Local Comic Store for short series (like Blackest Night) and whatever else grabs his eye at the time. But there have been times that they have sold out of an issue by the time we get there; and just a couple times we have seen an entire shipment of an issue the store received with the comics bent/warped.
Mail-order subscription makes sure we always get the issue, and in perfect condition.
Because we were subscribing to 4 different comics, we got a deal... $2.99 comics for $2.25.
Besides, it's nice to get something GOOD in the mail once in a while!

I completely understand why a lot of people use mail order servies.; and have considered it myself. There are quite a few advantages. However, I really like my LCS and like to support local businesses when possible so I still stick with a pull list.

Support at what cost to you?

Good post. I have been on the fence for a while with regard to mail-order subscriptions. My #1 concern holding me back has been whether or not I would be opening my mailbox to find my books folded in half with all the other junk mail. Knowing that they would come bagged and boarded definitely eases those concerns a little (would have to actually see with my own eyes before exhaling). All that said, SCLINGERMAN never said which company he uses. Do all subscription houses bag n board? If anyone else has any experience or suggestions regarding different vendors, please post. Also -- do the shipping costs counter the book discount? What are these costs usually? Bulk discounts?

I agree with supporting your LCS, I make it a weekly Wednesday stop on my way home from work. But there some books that I collect no matter what, and have had to pass it up on the shelf due to creases or blunted/stubbed corners.

Thanks

I agree. I've had my concerns about receiving them in the mail. I also live in Canada so my books have to travel that much further. So please again, if you guys wouldn't mind listing some of the services you use that would be awesome.

I love supporting my LCS. I'll always pick up the odd books there. And visit for hours on weekends in my back issue quests. I've been doing some of the math though. With the US / Canadian exchange and some of the stores in my area I can end up paying close to $5 a book. Looking around online it looks like I can save $100 on my monthly pull lists even after shipping if I subscribe.

So my biggest concerns are: Condition on arrival? How many shipments per month? Like how long will I be waiting for mine to arrive in the mail? Weeks?

Thanks guys,

Ex,

I have been using mailordercomics.com for years now and am very pleased with the service.  The savings is incredible, most books are at least 38% off cover price ($1.85 for a $2.99 cover, $2.47 for a $3.99 cover) and some select books are up to 75% off each month.  I am able to buy a lot more books than I could at a LCS or when I used to use mycomicshop.com.  There are no tiers of discounts.  If you buy 1 or 40 books, the discounts are the same.  They also stand behind what they send.  If you get anything damaged, they either replace if it they still have stock or they credit you and let you keep the damaged book.  This has only happened to me a couple of times over 3 or more years though because everything comes together in a large plastic bag, wrapped in flexible cardboard and sent in a box with packing peanuts.  I like the fact that I can choose media mail with a monthly shipment too, so my shipping costs are around $5 a month.  I can't say enough good stuff about them, you should add them to whatever list you're considering.

For the record, I have no affiliation with the company, I'm just a very pleased customer.

The only mail order comic we get is my son's Marvel Adv Spider-man.

He likes seeing his name on it, and he gets to open it.

I have always done a pull list at my LCS.  One reason is supporting a local business, and I have known the owner for years.  I also like being able to get my comics when they come out, instead of waiting.

One other bonus is that the owner will occasionally order something for me he sees in Previews that he thinks I might like, but he otherwise wouldn't order.  Of course, he knows I almost always end up buying.

Oh, and since I only pull one publisher right now, he automatically orders everything from that publisher.  I don't have to submit my orders for each title, or for one-shots, HCs and tpbs, etc.
