Why does it say ...
featuring a B&W cover by ED McGUINNESS
...when it shows a color cover?
Where does he get those wonderful toys!
I have yet begun to surrender.

| There are variant covers every month, they aren't going away. But they're a minor part of the industry, it's not hard to just ignore them if you don't like em.

Most collectors I know are completists. You can ignore them and your collection then becomes incomplete and you are missing all the rare ones that collectors take pride in owning. I think it's better to just boycott the series and quit supporting the companies that constantly put carrots on a string dangling in front of your face. It's a lack of respect for the collector.

Why care what others collect? I pick up the odd variant (no I don't pay anywhere near that much for them if at all), not for completist sake but because I simply like the cover.
So sue me. Sorry what others collect bothers you.

| Everyone seems to think variants/gimmicks caused the decline in the 90s and seem to imply we're headed for another one because of their resurgence. Anyone ever consider that they are more of a symptom than the cause? The publishers aren't putting out variants to "disrepect the collectors". They're desperate for sales in a declining market.

I'm sorry, but this is kind of stupid. There is no major movement to boycott this practice, making it a futile effort. How many people are on board, how many have you organized? Who wants to give up their favorite titles over a matter they're perfectly free to ignore and has no bearing on them? Boycotting something you're collecting would only make your collections even more incomplete, so it's contrary to the motivation your claiming.
If I want to collect Amazing Spider-Man #1-600, and I do, boom, I've done it. I could care less if I have the 6 different variants of 50 different issues. If I have an issues, I have it, I don't care which cover it is.
And besides, collectors created the demand for variant covers obsessing over things like a 35 cents instead of a 30 cents price stamp.
Most comic readers are not completionists in any case. Most buy comics to, you know, read and enjoy them, and again, could care less what the cover is.

Same here. If it's a 50/50 cover, I just grab the one I like. If it's rarer ratio and therefore costs more, I ignore it. I had fun collecting all the Marvel Zombies variants for awhile since they didn't cost any more, but that's about it.

Varients had hardly anything to do with it, it was people buying 100 copies of individual issues, and stores over ordering foolishly.

| I do think this is hurting the hobby. I am a completionist. I used to think variants were cool until they flooded the market. I am a completionist on UXM, Action Comics, Detective, Adventure, Superman and Batman so it's not like I am trying to collect all variants for all titles. But everytime they bring out a variant that costs me $10 or $20 (and I do get pleasure from owing them as part of my complete sets of those titles) that's comic funds that I am not spending on the publishers other output. For me that's means I am buying a lot less marginal vertigo sellers than I used to get because I am spending that money on variants instead. As some of the vertigo titles only sell between 5,000 and 15,000 copies it does not take many people like me spending too much on variants to threaten the viability of other titles we might be buying instead. I am not proud of this. Part of me wants to stop buying the variants and buy those vertigo titles again but the other part of me want to matain that 30+ year complete set that I started putting together 30+ years ago. Earl.

| It is annoying have 3 or 4 variants for a new issue. Expensive too.
