It's an old topic, but now I am tired. Again, a seller charged me $6 extra on shipping cost claming it's for handling fees, but I received my comics without bag and boards shipped in a box with some paper to fill it. The comics arrived in VF condition but announced as NM

Should I give negative feedback? I never did it, but now it's enough.

What would you do?

I would complain to them first...comparing the extra charge with the lack of quality packing...and requesting a refund of the extra charge.

After that you have to kind of weigh the issue on whether neg feedback will actually accomplish something...the anonymous rating field on shipping and packaging might be more efective...

I suggest eBay comic buyers to prepare for the worst by at least outlining a model of how they want their purchases to to be packed. That way the seller has been given fair warning that they are responsible for the sound packing of the item and should expect to be held accountable should damage occur during shipping due to negligent packing. Sellers don't always demonstrate common sense; who sends a comic in a manila envelope and expects the mail man to deliver it without a crimp? Or maybe using a bubblewrap envelope will keep the book flat? My constant favorite...a combination of manila bubblewrap envelope accompanied with a comic backing board floating inside the package. Yeeeeesh!

Sadly I've had this happen several times. But finally, last month after receiving "NM" comics sent to me from two different sellers but arriving destroyed, I decided to take pictures of the damage and make a template notice that I now send to any seller from whom I purchase comics.

I made a slideshow of one of the damaged packages I received to illustrate why sellers should heed my request.

Afterall, if a seller has done everything I ask to reasonably protect the comic then I really can't fault them if the book arrives with severe postal damage. High price books I additionally request insurance. I wait till they respond to my notice before paying. But since the notice, I haven't had trouble. It say's:

"Important! Thrilled as I am to win this comic, please tell me how well you pack comics? The feedback I leave sellers also reflects how well they pack delicate items like comics. Recently I've had comics, packaged in envelopes, crammed into my mail box because the sellers ignored my advise. Example: http://s220.photobucket.com/albums/dd223/.................................... from seller herminio7087. I ask that comics be sandwiched between two THICK UNBENT sheets of cardboard (that over size the comic edges by at least 1/2 inch) & secured shut with tape on all four sides. Protecting the entire book. Backing-boards alone aren't enough to keep the comic from being inadvertantly bent. Placing the sandwiched comic in an envelope is dicey but if you must please follow my instructions above and finally write "FRAGILE, DO NOT BEND!" on the outside of the package. Please reply; letting me know if I should pitch in a $1 to cover additional weight."

I agree with Shadow. Contact the seller and tell him what's happened. If he fails you, then let him know your reasonable intention to leave him NEG. Wait a day to see if he changes his tune. Let your NEG feedback sound intelligent and respectful; this will lend a persuasive warning to prospective comic buyers to not deal with that seller.

Know you aren't alone. Every collector feels this fear of seller packing. Anyhow, thank you for bringing this subject up and letting me vent... Dan

Nice Magic Dan, that's a great way to inform the seller of what you want.  Just a heads up: your whole address is visible in the pics.  You might want to edit that out for posting on a public forum.

Thanks Spidey! Great point... I editted the slideshow out for a smaller size snap shot.

The same thing happened to me yesterday.  Shipping took over two weeks and it was sent bagged and boarded in a bubble envelope.  Was going to leave a neutral but I didn't want to get dinged with a retaliation feedback since seller had a perfect feedback.

Seller's can no longer leave negative feedback.

I had a seller charge me $12 to ship a DVD to Canada. The postage said around $3 when it arrived. I asked the seller why -- he said to cover eBay and Paypal fees (which is not allowed, so I reported him. Of course nothing happened since it was a Powerseller). Since US buyers were only charged $3 for postage (and the same fees applied with their purchases) I called 'bull$h!t' and negged the jerk. My feedback still looks spotless.

I'd contact them first and explain why you're about to hit them with a NEG.

Sometimes they'll compensate you with a refund of the extra cost or sometimes a new book to "buy you off".

Here is my standard, cut-and-paste to all sellers I've just bought comics from:

Dear EBAY SELLER,

Hey there, EBAY SELLER! I will be making a payment on this item no later than PAYMENT DATE, but I wanted to drop you a line and let you know that I have been burned on my last couple of eBay purchases with the packaging. My last two shipments arrived severally bent due to poor packaging and, if possible, I'd like to request hard boards to protect the comics and a big old "Please Do Not Bend!" on the package cover. I am sure you know your business well and package like a pro, but I did want to leave you this message just for my own piece of mind. As a fellow eBayer, I know you understand my concern.

The casual note lets the seller know that you're basically just a nice person who's concerned about the condition his/her purchase will arrive in and it keeps your request in the back of their minds while they're preparing your comics for delivery. If your comics arrive FUBAR, the seller has no excuse for poor packaging other than being a total douchebag to enjoys disappointing people.
