Marvel hasn't put as much energy into switching things around with retcon-ing as DC has, but their universe has had some alterations since its naive & uncomplicated beginnings. What are the essential titles to bring an old-time collector up to speed on post 1980 developments? I've seen hints at an overview/reorganizing of Marvel's universe in a book called Conspiracy, and in Marvels Project that's coming out now -- any others? Civil War, obviously (I guess...), that's one I have yet to tackle.

With Marvel's cross-over madness, it's probably impossible to focus on a specific series in order to get up to speed on all the changes. Just reading one title alone from 1980 up will have tons of gaps (like Uncanny X-men or even Amazing Spider-man).

This idea isn't as appealing as actually reading the books, but when I got back into comics (Marvl in particular) about 3 years ago, I used Wikipedia to help me through the many changes. I also found my local library to be a very valuable source for checking out stories (such as Civil War) with TPB's. Both ideas helped me to focus, as well as save money.
