At the end of the day we aspire to have all of the "rare and unattainable" books because we're collectors. Part of the reason we chose this hobby is for those rare finds on Craigslist for $20 or some old broad that has 3 copies of action comics #1, has no idea what they're worth and will give them to you if you find her cat.

Its the thrill of the chase........ For everyone there is that one book that we look at on ebay every day but will never get.

Whats the point if we can just have a duped copy of every rare book we want. Would we all be here right now?

IMO its retarded.

Well, perspective has everything to do with it. I paid cover price for my copy of X-Men #94. I don't get all excited when I see the book. I never really cared for the storyline in X-Men until Byrne and Austin were on the book. I have X-Men #1-350. Maybe more. I'd rather have a counterfeit X-Men #94 than I would a second printing of any modern comic. To me it's an interesting novelty.

It's great that it's an interesting novelty to you. It's also illegal, and CGC has no obligation to grade it.

Furthermore, if you don't even want it in the slab as a novelty collector, what are we arguing about?

I'm merely stating that they are in my opinion a useless company that cannot even perform the task they are being paid to do. That middle "G" in "CGC" defines what their service is to do. Putting "NG" on anything is a failure to perform their task. I'm even pondering whether they should be called "CNGC" in my future posts.

Whether any comic is legal or not has nothing to do with whether it has a grade.

Last time I read their legal disclaimer, it implied they weren't responsible for anything, even the accuracy of the grade. So it does not shock me that you'd say they aren't obligated to do anything if someone is paying them for a grade.

CNGC

Cute.

But seriously, it doesn't matter that their job is to grade comics. The comic is an illegal copy. It's tainted goods bro, either way.

I've been told that this is a "photocopy". If so, they should not even have dignified it by putting it in a case.

I agree. If this is a photocopy, then they probably gave it value by slabbing it.

Bottom line seems to be that counterfeits are illegal. But people break the law. And people are defrauded. And there is a legal system to deal with it.

So how about this question as part of the discussion: How does this copy grade as a counterfeit? Is it a Good counterfeit? Fair? Near Mint?

That's very funny. How cool would that be.

That's exactly what I'd want to know if it was professionally done. And please, don't be so naive as to think that no counterfeit publications are bought, sold, and collectible. There was a whole book (Hot Wax) dedicated to bootleg albums. I have first printings of the LCD comic that were halted after a lawsuit by Starbucks. I have Halle the Hooter Girl which was recalled after it was discovered that proper authorization had not come from the Hooter's chain. There are plenty of illegal publications that are sought out as collectible. People collect the counterfeit Cerebus #1, TMNT #1, Cry For Dawn #1, & Eerie #1's out there. After all, imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Making a counterfeit color comic would be extremely rare.

Then again, if this is nothing but a photocopy, the CGC just legitimized a piece of garbage. Typically when something is counterfeit, it's not flat out obvious like a photocopy would be.
