Silver Age Surfer (9/22/2009)
pmadreenter (9/20/2009) Marvel Zombies 2 #5Possibly the best cover of the whole series. Sure it's hackneyed, but that's the point, and it's well-executed. Nice pickups. Nice. They shoulda made it #4!! Great art! TEX

Slow week for me, I had end of the month issues, not too many quarters left over to toss around buying funnybooks... but I'm planning a monster buy next week, going to score big-big on... probably Monday. Details when it happens. For the week ending 10/3, I had an artsy/undergroundsy package come in the mail: Facts O Life Funnies Frank 1-3 Scott Russo's Jizz 1, 3-8 all for 11.75 and then I did see a few things in the 0.54 cent bin that I couldn't pass up: Daredevil 192 H P Lovecraft's Haunt Of Horror 1 (Corben) Miracleman 2 Thor 356 $11.75 seems like a steal! Great covers...weird ones on those Frank comics. I won't even ask about the Scott Rizzos, LOL!! You have been putting up sweet stuff for me to gander at. Thank you. TEX

Yeah, that Frank series is a big pile of strange. I love it. One of the stories from those books is HERE: http://lambiek.net/woodring_exhibition/begin_frank.htm ... but the pages are real small and it's a pain to read it.
This one is better formatted, but it's one of the more rational stories, actually makes sense: http://www.jimwoodring.com/comics_pages/blissp1.html
Scott Russo's Jizz turned out just to be a self-righteous 22 year old kid ranting about racism and other issues... and when he gets tired of politics he goes into "I'm a fat, sexually repressed fanboy and I can't get a girlfriend" mode.
Now I have to work on formatting those scans, trim down the size a little so they won't look so overwhelming on the screen.

Monday of last week I was feeling *the urge*, so I put on my chartreuse Ring Of Cheapness and had its beam direct me toward comic books; I ended up buying a rather large stack of readers. Right now I'm reading through the Daredevils, and I'm seeing more 5.5 - 7.0 books than I'd like, but condition wasn't the first thing on my mind when I was shopping... there's still enough 8.0s and 8.5s that I'm mostly happy with them :
Animal Man 8, 11-18
Avengers 238, 241, 242, 244, 309, Annual 14
Barefootz: Comix Book Stories (Renegade? reprints from Marvel/70's)
Cerebus 105, 116, 118, 120, 123, 124
Daredevil 195, 199, 201-205, 210, 214, 216, 217, 219-223, 225, 226, 235-237, 239, 242-244, 246, 247, 250, 251, 253, 254,
259, 260, 263-267, 269
Defenders 96, 113, 114, 116, 123, 124
Den 1 (you know, Corben...)
Doc Stearn, Mr. Monster (Eclipse) 9, 10
Doom Patrol 7-15, 24-27
Dreadstar (Epic) 1-10
Fantastic Four 263, 265, 266, 270, 271, 277-279, 292, 295, 297, 298, Annual 25
Gilgamesh (DC/Starlin skinny TPB.s) V2, V3, V4
Hawkworld Book Two: Freefall
Hellblazer 24
Incredible Hulk 348
Kazar (V2) 4,6,13-16
Marvel Spotlight (V2?) 6,7 (Star Lord)
Millenium 1-8
Mr. Monster (Dark Horse) 1,3
Mr. Monster's True Crime 1
Mister X 10, 14
Mister X: Brides of Mr. X 1A, 1B, 5
Phantom Stranger 1(of 4)
Secret Wars II #1
Showcase '93 #7
Silver Surfer V2 16, 32
Spectre V2 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12-23, 26-31, Annual 1
Starman 1,2
Starstruck (Epic) 1,4,6
Swamp Thing 72-75, 77, 78, 81, 85-87, 90
Tales of The Beanworld 5, 9, 10, 11
Twist 3 (Kitchen Sink title w/Kurtzman and Crumb)
Uncanny XMen 247
Web of Spiderman 43
Wrath Of The Spectre 1-3 (Reprints. Oops.)
I've been buying Cerebus and filing them without reading for about a year now, waiting for the day when I have enough of a run to be able to read them consecutively. With today's purchase (see below) I have 19 of them, still not enough for me to start reading them.
Dreadstar's been on my want list, I been looking for an excuse to pick some of those up. Likewise the Phantom Stranger miniseries. I still need a copy of Secret Origins #10...
The FF.s are from the John Byrne series; I read two of them this morning; so far, I don't see what the fuss was about...
That second series of Kazar (Kazar The Kontentious? I forget...) has a killer back up series in the back, Val Mayerik drawing the Adventures of Zabu... really luscious art, chockfulla Frazetta/Williamson swipes. I know for sure that it's in #19, don't yet know about any of the others. I suppose I could look it up, but... so can you... It rockth.
Some awesome covers on some of those Spectres, painted by Charles Vess. If I remember, he also did the Gifts Of The Night four-shot on Vertigo that I also dug to the utmost, daddy-o.
So... all of the above... 192 books of sequential art in four-color booklets... what you be imagining I paid for that mess?
5.00 USD. That's 00.02.6 USD per book, old math; god knows what it would come to in the new math -- tex, you wanna take a swing at the calculations? ?
And it looks as though I may be able to pull a similar stunt next month sometime... probably right around the time I finish reading this stack. I think it's time to buy my first longbox. Better make it two.
Meanwhile, though, I had to come back to the real world and start paying full price for my comics again; I went by Hernando's Fifty-Cent Hideaway last night, just in case there was anything there that was truly irresistible, and I ended up dropping a fistfull of quarters there, too. No sales resistance. 0.54 apiece, mostly in 8.0 +, the way a comic book really oughta be:
Cerebus 89. 106
A Death Gallery (Vertigo sketchbook thingie)
Detective Chimp 1
Final Crisis Aftermath 1
Hellblazer 3 !!!!!
Preacher 4
Secret Origins 40
Zorro 1,2
My friend The Flee has been pressuring me to pay more attention to books about apes, he's all "if you're not down with Grodd, you're no friend of mine" and stuff, so Secret Origins and the Chimp were to keep him happy, Zorro came out last year, new publisher (called Dynamic?) so I thought I'd give it a shot. Spanish/Mexican content is always a plus in my book. The others, there's just no excuse for, especially the "Slap 'Crisis' on the cover and see if it sells" title there. Well, it was pubbed this year, THAT'S my excuse, because not often do books from the current year make it to Hernando's bins.
I'll slap some scans up on screen this evening sometime, naptime calls.

Thanks for the pics pmadreenter!
I really like that Dreadstar cover. There's a story in my Epic Illustrated mags called "Metamorphosis Odyssey" that stars the Vanth Dreadstar character. I've only read two mags so far, but I like it...then again I like Starlin so he can't do much wrong in my eyes. Sweet lot o' goodness sir!!

Yeah, when I dropped out of collecting in the 70's, Starlin was *THE MAN*, him and Steve Gerber;; it was pretty much when Marvel started squashing those two that I began to lose interest. I still think his runs of Capt. Marvel and Warlock are up near the top of the great funnybook series es. Haven't read any Dreadstars yet, but the very recent books by Starlin that I've seen have been pretty good, he's still got most of it.
I had a weird day today -- I dropped into a LCS and didn't buy anything. Something ain't right...

Ja, Chihuahua... A whole WEEK went by without buying any comics; I stopped into my fave store a time or two and I just wasn't feeling no love for anything I saw in the bins. Of course, I'm not anywhere finished reading that 200-book haul from the beginning of the month, so I guess I'm not urgently needing to buy anything, unless I see something really special + exciting...
BUT
I did get a package in the mail today. Every so often, when I'm a little ahead financially, I decide I can splurge on a GA book; at the beginning of this month, I decided it would be quite okay if I spent up to 50.00 on a GA superhero title or a nice horror comic, if I could find something for one-half of guide or less... so I looked around the bay for a couple of days and came up with this:

for ... um... 38.53 postpaid. Condition's at the low end of what I find acceptable, but I can live widdit. Only the 3rd or 4th GA superhero book I've ever bought, in 30 years of intermittent collecting... but this go-round, that's not how things are gonna be, no sir and no ma'am. (Well, maybe the 5th, if The Purple Claw counts.)
Oh yeah, I also wanted to break with precedent and post some interior pages of Val Mayerik drawing the Zabu feature in Kazar The Savage -- feast your eyes on the best Frazetta imitation ever:

Dig those crazy troglodytes -- straight up no-apologies swipe from Thun'da. Stealin' from the best!
