Silver Age Surfer (9/27/2009)

[quote]I like Daimon Hellstrom... he WILL go bad... Score one for ol' TEX!!

I couldn't agree more Tex! And speaking of "score", let's check out Saturday's haul, shall we?

I won't be able to make that warehouse convention today, so I kinda went nuts yesterday.

First, the new Lantern. 4 more issues (24, 25, 26 and 37) should be arriving from Texas on Monday or Tuesday to join this one.

Now, a whole bunch of random modern Image and DC #1s that, for some strange reason, I didn't already have. $2 a pop.

A VF Silver Surfer #8 that, unfortunately, got rather severely bent en route here (eBay... you take your chances).

Maintains strong value though, and it was a great read.

And the final purchase, a hardcover copy of Green Lantern Secret Origin by Geoff Johns.

As you can see, I'm now using a dark wood background for these shots, so it's open season on "marble" again.

SWEET!!

Those are great looking pick-ups! That SA Green Lantern and SS are cool brother!!

Silver Age Surfer (10/8/2009)
Long time, no post!

Couple of real gems so far this week. Check 'em out.

I gotta say, Hawkman is cool to me again. I never owned anything this old with him in it before (definitely Brave & Bold #34 is next), and after reading these first two issues, I'll also be on the lookout for 3-27. Bit sad how quickly he gets taken out in Blackest Night though. I mean, come on... Aqualad puts up more of a fight!

Hawkman is cool!!!

I bought The Brave and the Bold #34 before I copped Hawkman #1 and #4. It's a must, but it is pricey.

They did Hawkman dirty in Blackest Night. I was really surprised that he died at all, and so easily. I hope they bring him back.

Yeah, generally speaking, DC always felt like Marvel Jr. to me, like a line of clothing specially designed for kids, whereas its counterpart geared the content in its books to a slightly (or possibly significantly) older crowd. Compare the cover art of most Green Lanterns to, let's say, your average silver age Daredevil or Sub-Mariner, and 3/5 times you may say to yourself "Yeah, OK, they all look like comic covers frankly", and 3/5 times you'd be spot on - but in the other 2/5 times the difference in style becomes crystal clear, and I think it often comes across in the simplicity of the DC covers and the relative complexity of the Marvel stuff. And when it comes to content, well, it's not much of a stretch to link Marvel to a generally more mature approach to storytelling. DC covers, particularly in this era, strike me as a step up from the Disney stuff with how straight-forward they are (with a few of those old EC sci-fi elements thrown in to pump up appeal), whereas Marvel tends to target the older reader with what is undeniably "young adult" art.

Hawkman and Hawkgirl have always come across as a mishmash of Hardy Boys and Dick Tracy (but with more aliens), but that doesn't stop the stories from being marginally more intriguing to be than most of its DC contemporary titles, in particular Green Lantern, and anyone who reads a lot of silver age Green Lantern knows exactly what I'm talking about.

"G.I. Joe cartoon show endings where the main characters all laugh at some inane and unfunny comment" all around.

@ Tex -

I get the feeling that offing characters as quickly as they are in Blackest Night is building up to a more flushed-out climax (hopefully). They seem to be moving awful fast, but it's supposedly going to be an awful short series.

Hopefully Doctor Strange 169-181 will arrive by tomorrow so that I can get a nice shot of the first solo appearance up here, but all my faith in USPS Priority has evaporated over the years and I'm guessing we won't see those until next week.
