I don't have one of these "back issue" threads.
I was feeling incomplete.
But now that I've started one, I'm absolutely sure that incompleteness will melt away like butter on the stove.
Down to brass tacks -

For those interested in the cost, all three were 65% off at a local store sale today ($20 for the #14 and $10 each for the other two).
I'm still after a #40 (Origin of The Guardians) in decent condition for less than $150, but everything cheaper looks terrible. Beaten and tattered like you wouldn't believe.
No "box o' gems for $1 each" miracles so far this weekend, but how's that anything new?

| Nice pick-ups, GL is hot right now. I expect that whole run (V2) to jump in price over the next year.

spruce213 (9/19/2009) Why 65% off for? Was there a sale?
25% off for the weekend sale - 25% discount while the bulk of the collection is in Montreal for a convention - 15% membership discount.
And yes, hopefully these will build up some tangible value in the near future. Either way, I like having these Lanterns because it's nice personal reading (and because the GA stuff is predominantly out of my current price range). When a comic costs thousands of dollars even in barely collectible condition, I don't get involved.
Nice start to your post!!!

Cheers pal. We can totally share the granite look. I think we should restore it to mainstream status.

Nothing like a sweet new thread. Especially if you're filling it with gems like those GL books. 65% off is a pretty good incentive to spend some cash. Nice deals and hot comics. Very Nice SAS.

Well, let me start off by saying thanks to everyone for the kind comments on my latest pickups. Fortunately I live in a city that's awash with stores and over the past few years great deals have been rolling into town. I don't hit conventions or yard sales nearly as much as I used to. I'm sure you could make a point about the recession and worldwide online selling having something to do with the lower store prices on back issues, but I won't.
I'll jinx it if I do that.
I'm in this hobby primarily to enjoy reading comics, but the news that this particular Green Lantern volume may see a slight (but possibly significant) bump in value over the next few years kinda sealed the deal for me when it came to the prospect of shelling out for it. So I swung by the nearest shop this evening on my way home with grabbing something between #20 and #30 in mind (if it seemed like an under-graded issue) and, at the very back of the Green Lantern stack (apparently misplaced by someone among more current issues), something caught my eye.
I coughed up $50 at the counter.
I got this in return.

Cover has almost invisible soiling on the left half, but it's flat, intact, sharp-cornered and glossy. Turning in early tonight to read it.
Now I need #85 and #86, the ones where the ever "socially conscious" Green Lantern and Green Arrow team up once again to battle Arrow's buddy's heroin addiction. Apparently it won several awards for addressing the drug problem in America, and for targeting a young adult/adult audience or some such noise, but I guess that's what made Lantern a bit different. He wasn't/isn't brooding, narcissistic or cheeky.
He's almost annoyingly good.
