Organizing is one of the less favorable things about collecting for sure.

I couldn't agree more. That's why I'm looking for a permanent solution here. I'm in the process of upgrading since the vast majority of my current boxes were acquired second-hand for a buck here and a buck there and they're all falling apart. So I was thinking about a whole new set of boxes and a couple of binders for particularly important issues, but now I have to go hunting for boxes of adequate width and, if I can't locate any, mag boxes and the whole thing is pissing me off.

New labels must be made. Shelf space must be conserved.

And might I add... @$#%!

That's just craziness!!!

I am: "a slight case of Asperger's with some obsessive compulsive disorder-like tendencies"
I LOVE organizing things!
I LOVE putting things in alphabetical and numerical order!
I LOVE entering comic books in my database and creating different queries and reports!
I LOVE putting comics in the proper spot between the other issues and dividers!
I LOVE putting all my closet clothes in alphabetical order of color.
I LOVE putting all our canned vegetables and boxed food in alphabetical order and then by expiration date.
I LOVE making sure all the flathead screws in all my house's lightswitches are all horizontal.

If you would pay me for my time, I would LOVE to go to all of your houses, and organize all your comic books!

If you want permanent then file cabinets would probably be your answer. Boxes can last a long time but eventually they will have to be replaced and they certainly will have a larger footprint.

Hey S.A.S. I haven't read the whole thread, just your original question, but the LCS here has Golden/Silver age boxes, and Modern boxes. and the diff in width is obvious even from a glance. If you want I could pick yp up a couple and mail those suckers your way.

If you're going to try replacing your old tired boxes, I'd suggest buying them all at the same time & place (possibly needing to go mail order) - then they'll all be the same size.

I have mag sized boxes in 3 different heights. about 1/4" diff, just enough to make stacking a bother.

Some of my short boxes will hold the wider silver age, most don't. And I have 4(?) that are actual Golden Age sized - a little smaller than mag sized.

Most of my collection is in these

the boxes they make today are slightly different from what I have.

5 boxes * 6 boxes tall - 24"x46.5" of floor space. Have 30 boxes against two walls facing each other... but they only fit up to the smaller silver age sized comics...

Does anyone have any suggestions on organizing books in short boxes? I'm talking about alphabetical order and numerical order back to front.... For example.... should I start at the end of the box farthest from me as I look at it and start with Action Comics # (lowest issue number) and work my way forward, or,... should I start with the end of the box that's closest to me as I look at it with Action Comics # (lowest number) and work my way to the back end of the box?

What do most of you do?

My boxes are scattered about, 2-5 per closet, with the emptier ones up front for easier accessibility.

What do most of you do?

If you are using boxes (I use short boxes on wire shelving...the depth is perfect), then put your comics in alpha order, front to back, with issues ascending (i.e. #1, then 2, then 3, etc heading to the back of the box.).

I recommend using that order because it makes it easier to move issues when you need to add more boxes.  You just pull from the back of the box to start your next box.

I know there are many people who mix publishers and go strict alpha order.  I separate by publishers put in alpha order, then the titles within by alpha order.  I separate publishers by comic dividers.  If you only have a couple publishers, then I guess that's fine to go straight alpha.  I have well over 150 different publishers, so I have to do it by publisher.
