Of all the superheroes born during the Silver Age, Daredevil has been able to hold my interest (in all his forms save cinematic) the longest. Something about him always seemed viable to me, despite the unrelenting barrage of fan assertions over the past 4 decades that his powers have been more than a little exaggerated at times. In fact, the comments started pouring in as early as the '64 debut, and that's one thing Daredevil Noir doesn't do - make Matt out be significantly more than he conceivably is.

By the way, I disagree with those folks regardless. He does what he does. Just read it and enjoy it.

Anyway, this is just a quick review of Daredevil Noir. It's readable. It's jam-packed with corny, unoriginal noir dialogue, but it does focus on countless colloquial "Kitchen" elements of his universe that I've always thought were excellent hooks in terms of highlighting the trigger for Murdock's simultaneously "devil-may-care" yet direct approach to the crime fighting process. The Noir angle is a grimmer, grittier and remarkably Batmanesque take on the whole affair sporting the art of Tomm Coker, which somehow overshadows this spin's shortcomings; specifically the sluggish plot progression. Like most current issues, it's overpriced and unnecessarily resplendent, but it's worth it for the "kid sittin' on yer bed readin' comics" feeling you get from flipping through it and seeing really excellent art on almost every page.

Did you like the Daredevil: Father miniseries? (Drawn by Quesada, I forget whether he scripted it or not....) What I've read of that sounded very much like your review here of the new Noir book.... except that the art was a little spottier, very strong double-page spreads and rather weak on the lesser pages with panels in sequence. The panels from the new one that you scanned in look sharp, I'll have to check this one out. (A bit like Severin? Nothing wrong with that AT ALL.)

Father was good. Shadowy and twisted. And the Noir series does share a few elements with Father. DD is always dimly lit, the character is more avenger than societal defender, and so on. However, Noir simply doesn't disappoint when it comes to panels, because they're all well-integrated with good cross dialogue that actually works when you read the issues in a linear fashion. When you put it down, you know you've read a noir genre comic book, and I like that it delivers pretty much exactly what you'd expect from examining any of the covers.

You'll end up spending less than 15 seconds reading a full spread of intermittent dialogue and narration, and minutes on end checking out the art before you turn the page.

I just did some writing on Daredevil (main series) at my blog, a quick review of some of the issues right after F Miller left, and I'll be posting comments about later issues, one year at a time, every so often for the next couple months (next batch probably in 26 days). Give it a look, if you want; maybe we can find something to talk about.

WHY IS THIS CHIMP CRYING?
