I understand if the book has some significant importance (first app., death of..., etc.) but what about when its just a book with nothing important about it.  I'm sure I have a high grade DC Sampler or Marvel Age somewhere but whats the point?  Or is this a collectible trend, adding collectibility value to an insignificant high grade book in order to chase and build a high grade collection?

Well brother,

It depends. I think that if you plan on trying to sell a book or if you really want to keep it from being damaged in any way, you can slab it if you like (although there are surely less expensive ways to protect your comics). Maybe you want it slabbed because it means something special to you. For example, the Avengers 167-177 is not a very valuable collection, but I want to get very high grade copies slabbed because I absolutely LOVE the Korvac Saga.
Some guys just get any old thing slabbed to try and sell it though...I don't get it, but hey, it's their cash.
I guess what I'm saying is that as a collector, you can pretty much collect, read, and slab whatever you like. That's what I love about collecting. If a guy wants to have high grade copies of the entire run of Spectacular Spider-Man slabbed (I dunno why...just kidding ), he can do it. But of course if he ever decides to sell his collection, he's gonna do it much easier than if they were not slabbed.
If it's not an important book (key issue), and one wants to slab it, one should do so out of love for the book, or just because they dang well want to, but I wouldn't recommend doing it as an investment...you'll spend more than you make in the long run, I think.

Perfect reason Tex. Some moderns I wanted graded are my Miller Daredevils. They hold a special value to me as well as My Daredevils 319 and 320 only because those are the first things my son's mom ever bought me.

There are no rules against what can be slabbed. I would love if it was cost worthy to get any old book slabbed but reality it just isn't ... if you are not going to be selling that book. Now if you were talking about SA or GA books the game changes a bit but for most modern and bronze books it is not worth it.

In the end only you can decide if it is worth it to you.

I am not a modern kind of guy but it is nice that PGX only charges $10 for modern. I think the case, inner well and microchamber paper are worth $10 bucks. Problem is if the modern is worth less than $10 bucks its a tough call. I think most submit 30 at a time hoping for a 9.6 or 9.8 as those seem to be where the money is at . I would do it for the preservation as long as the book was worth  as much or more than the slab cost itself.

$10 is not too steep especially if its something I intend to keep.  You're right as far as preservation.  If what I'm looking for is to ensure the item is well protected, and nothing else, then that would be the way to go.  However as mentioned earlier, there are other ways to protect the book but probably not as professionally done.  CGC is the way to go if I intend to resell in the future.

I guess what I'm seeing is similar to what I saw in my younger years of collecting, shop owners charging $5 - $10 more for books that were hanging on the wall (the same books that were in the regular bins the week before) all because the books were displayed in nice and clear mylars.  Come to think of it, those books were wrapped in a mylite bag with an acid-free backing board and then sealed (taped) in mylar, and professionally graded (by owner).  Whats that saying, the more things change the more things stay the same...

imo, there is no reason to slab a modern book unless you are going for the "strike while the fire's hot" resale. Even then, you better be faster then the guy(s) who did it before you.

Buy a mylar, a board ... even wrap it in a diaper. That should keep it safe enough.
