How can I tell which version I have?  I have bought several copies when they came out around in 92 or so..  but haven't picked them up since.  I wasn't aware that there is so many versions.  I have gone on the CPG site but none of the pics that are shown show the color scheme that I have.  ??  The Superman logo is yellow text with blue background.  and what about the black bag?  I haven't even opened them to know if they are different versions, and don't plan on opening.

I think only first printings had the black bag.
I think the later printings indicate what printing they were. Either in the indicia or possibly a roman numeral on the front cover. Earl would know. My memory is rusty.

The black bagged versions with the red logo actually contain variant covers. The problem is that no one knows if they have the ultra rare one because they will not open the bag.

Just joshin. Hoping more people will actually open the darn things

Your copy sounds like the first print Newsstand copy. There were several printings of that one and they will have a Roman Numeral (2-3+) below the price and a slightly different title colour scheme. The Direct edition was grey and looked like a tombstone with the Superman "Here Lies Earth's Greatest Hero" appearing embossed and the price in the centre just below it. With the bagged edition the bag was black with a dripping red blood Superman logo on the front with "Superman Memorial Set" on one side in red and Superman Logo, contents details, price and copyright details on the other. The comic inside is grey and made to look like a tombstone with the Superman logo "Here Lies Earth's Greatest Hero appearing "carved" in the cover, then the pricing details again. The rarer platinum bagged edition essentially looks the same as the regular bagged edition except the front logo is a bleeding platinum colour and "Platinum Edition" across the bottom, in platinum colour. On the back of the bag there is a small white Superman logo on the left and white copyright on the right. The comic inside is, again made to look like a tombstone but the cover is a thicker stock and squarebound. This allowed them to actually "emboss" the front cover details and it appears as though they may have a platinum foil enhancement as well. On the back the is a blank area with a serial number in it and the back cover is a gatefold.

This link will give you some more details and images:

Didn't the later printings come in white bags, or was that a different issue?

I remember all the hype around the release with people paying upwards of $75 to $100 shortly after it's release. Can you imagine the prices they would have fetched if ebay were around.

The 'rebirth' of Superman was in the white bag. Apparently that issue was the first sign of the apocalypse in the slow industry meltdown.

The white Bag issue was Adventures of Superman #500 or there abouts. I believe there were no second printings of the bagged editions. I don't recall them anyway.

I would assume to some they do. The most commonly accepted belief is that they will damage the book in the long run. Therefore people suggest carefully opening the bag and putting the contents in a proper bag then bagging the bag in another bag. If the bag has no markings on it, it is just clear, then just dispose of it.

I have three bagged issues, one opened and i put the comic in a proper bag and slid that back into the poly bag, one sealed, one platinum sealed.

The age old question.  I would imagine it would add to it.
