I need to purchase the Overstreet Price Guide.  Would I be better off waiting for the publication of the new edition or pick up a copy of the current edition now?  Thanks.

Well if you wait for the next edition, it normally comes out around March to May each year. If you purchase this years edition just shop around for it and you could get up to 35% off on it.
If you go to http://www.dcbservice.com they have the soft cover edition for 35% off for $19.47 and the hard cover at $22.75. Just look at Gemstone Publishing to find the books offered. It is a hard price to beat, and I always use them in my current issues so you will encounter no problems getting it.
All published guides are a little behind after they are printed anyway. I always wait for the BIG BIG Overstreet Price guide which normally comes out much later in the year but I have yet to see anyone offer it yet. It has larger pages and is in a spiral form for easy use. It is much better than their normal edition I think. I think they still print that edition. It is the same as the regular edition just much larger print.

Id just go ahead and buy the current one offered now than wait. At least you will have one in hand and not be let down by not having one. I use this site for all current issues since most guides aren't as up to date as the fine people here.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info.  I'll shop around for one now.  I use it mostly as a reference tool.  It is a wealth of information and, from what I've read here in the forum, they have really expanded the information on grading.  I'm looking forward to getting it.

Overstreet publishes a separate grading guide (different from the price guide). If you pick this up, do yourself a favour and get the 2003 edition which is less controversial then the more recent one.

What's controversial in the new edition? What was changed? You got me curious now!

Including gem mint?  Defects in gem mint?  Sounds like someone is kowtowing to the label chaser crowd.  Give a hand out to the people who complain they can't get a book to grade out at a 10.0.

Anyone know what CGC's response to the defect issue in a gem mint is?

Crazy......

I don't recall hearing anything from CGC on the matter. CGC has never operated similarly to the Overstreet though ... other than taking on the basics.

The latest edition of the grading guide is good except for some of the things they showed as allowable in the highest grades. So really purchasing the latest grading guide won't kill you as long as you recognize that many collectors did/do not accept the defects shown in the higher grades.
