Hey guys,

I'm interested in your take on a comic defect like this. Overstreet isn't crystal clear on this.

This is Uncanny X-Men #282 (Bishop cameo) and this wobbly defect apart, it's likely a 9.4 comic. What kind of impact does a defect like this have? Is it "not too bad" or "throw it away" material? I'm not anal about keeping a comic like this in my collection, but I do want to grade it correctly. So, basically, is this a VF 8.0 comic or a VG 4.0 ? Or worse? The wobbliness is basically half an inch from the top down over the cover and the fades off. Same from the bottom.

Thanks in advance,
Jens

I would have to see more of it to judge but that is usually cause by humidity. If it is only at the edges and there is no other major damage it would not grade too low.

Probably would fit into the VF range. IF there is an acidic smell then maybe lower but I doubt I would drop it lower than maybe a 7.0 .... if it was even humidity that caused the warping.

Any chance you could scan the book in as opposed to a photo? I can't see why that would go as low as a 7.0 to be honest, it looks like a pretty tight copy. I'm not sure how waviness like that affects the grade.

I'll try to get a real scan sometime this weekend. I assume scans should be made without the protective sleeve and with margins around the book? Not too familar with the drill of scanning.

Edit: Oh, and by the way, I currently have it as VF 8.0 in my collection. Overall I think it's too good for a 7.0.

Yes, when scanning be sure it is out of the bag.  You also want to be sure you do ont crop off the edges of the comic.  We need to see scan bed (white) behind it to judge the edges.

Also, the back does affect grade, too....so you may want to include a scan of the back cover if it has something quesitonable on it, or if you want a more informed decision.

Spot on, try to aim for a scan that ends up something like this one, and as Argus said, a rear scan would be very helpful.

Also, if you're scanning a book with a very white cover, leave the scanner lid open or place a different coloured piece of card behind the book (red works well) to highlight the edges.
