My boss at work is HUGE into vintage G.I.Joe's and has a side business devoted to them.  He recently warned me to STAY away from selling my comics on Ebay.  I'm wondering if this scenario has happened to more than a few people.

Basically a Person sells an Item on EBAY to a Customer. The customer pays the seller the money, but when he gets the said item, he complains to the seller saying it's in terrible condition and wants his money back for the original item.  You do your best to resolve the issue but end up giving the customer his money back and you get back your item.  BUT the item he sends back WASN'T the item you sold him.  It's the Same thing, but a completely destroyed/terrible condition item.  You cannot get ebays help and you cannot get the buyer to admit to anything.

Basically my boss warned me about scams going on a LOT dealing in collectables of people who already own an item, buying one in better shape on ebay and then sending you their "Shitty" item saying to ebay that you sold them something falsely advertised.

Take good pictures/scans of your comics. Grade them as harshly as possible.
Say that you're selling them "As Is". Select the option for no refunds.
Unless you're selling something super pricey, you probably have little to fear.
I would say that 99% of the buyers on ebay are honest.

Yes, those kinds of people and scams exist.  The same basic thing exists everywhere though....retail stores deal with similar things as well.   Just expect it once in a while.  If you deal in large volume on ebay....it's gonna come up on rare occasion, but 99% of the time....you'll be fine.  You just gotta figure it in as part of the price of doing business on ebay.

I feel for the sellers since I sell as well but at the same time I have to speak for the buyers. Example, today I received Peter Parker #1 in the mail. Paid 20 something bucks for it and it was advertised as a 9.2. Now I consider myself a fair grader and grade all my books as soon as they're delivered so when this book came in, I was disappointed to find that it's nothing more than an 8.0 book at best... 7.5 if I wanna be truthful with myself, lol.

Now should I complain? Usually I allow some error from sellers. It was advertised as a 9.2. If it came in and I graded it as a 8.5, cool. Whatever, but with this one I felt the need to complain.

I sent an e-mail ( haven't heard back yet) and I'm hoping that the seller takes me seriously as I take my collecting seriously. Hopefully he will.

On a good note about sellers, Mile High is a good seller. I bought around 30 books from them and one came back as a 8.0 not a NM like I ordered and one book was not the right title. What did Mile High do? They sent me the correct books at no extra cost and they were really swift about it. Next day delivery. Just thought i'd share that.

EDIT: Peter Parker guy contacted me back. Great guy.

I'm coming for you Fantastic Four #48!!!

I am not sure what your questions are since you don't actually ask any. As with any such public site the chance of scams on both ends exists. Heck the chance of being scammed even in meat space exists but most of the time you are safe. If your boss is getting scammed alot he probably is not being very careful in how he goes about it. I haven't heard of rampant collectible scams going on lately. (there are always some though)

Anybody giving refunds should only do so after having the item back in hand.
